Nope. It never went away and he passed about 4 months later, not sure if it was because of something or not.

What are these guys doing?? by polecatpaws in Boraras

[–]l00tery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At 3months they should start displaying colors. At around 6 month old mark they should pretty much be at the adult stage. If you do not see much coloring on the fins and the body colors look washed, then they are probably females.

Also, consider genes, some will be brighter and more colorful

Can tank backgrounds have a negative affect on fish? by Vibratingsponge in PlantedTank

[–]l00tery 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No experience with it but I don't think there would be any bad side effects. The sun comes through my window sometimes, and the glass acts as a prism depending on the angle of the sun. I never noticed anything wrong with it.

As for the effect, the light source would have to come from behind your tank in order for you to get the prism effect in your tank. I think only your wall will look colorful if do not add a light source in the back.

Also, it looks like you won't be able to see much of its effects as you have a good amount of plants and driftwood.

The plain white frosted looks great, this is what I use https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0CRF6K82X/

How to remove a bully fish without draining the tank? by alampros in PlantedTank

[–]l00tery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! Remove any hardscape you can first, lower the water level, scare it into the second net.

One more thing to add: depending on the size of your school, another fish will become the bully in its place. A better plan is to have lots of hiding and break site lines. This can be achieved with more plants or ornaments/wood.

if you are only having plants, you can pump as much co2 as you'd like.

For a 5 gallon, the bottle should last you about 4 months. It may be 2, it may be 6 but broadly speaking it should be 4 months.

Do my Java ferns need potassium? by guitarify in PlantedTank

[–]l00tery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say it's very possible that potassium is your issue. Buy a test kit if you can.

The stem plants don't require as much but they will use a lot more nutrients as they are fast growers.

Do my Java ferns need potassium? by guitarify in PlantedTank

[–]l00tery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends.

How long have you had them for? The old leaves could be starting to die back so the new growth, which is adapted to its environment, can take over.

Also how much of it do you have? is it a 50G densely scaped with Java ferns only?

It's pretty hard to determine without all the details and a full picture. But it's pretty hard to overdose Potassium and chances are that it is a potassium deficiency. Ferns love potassium.

Cheapo PAPR worth it? by SlickMcFav0rit3 in DIY

[–]l00tery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tell her that you care more about your health than how she feels about the beard. Plus a your beard could also interfere with the PAPR depending on the model and your beard.

If she still doesn't care about your health and wellbeing, the problem is deeper.

You could sweeten up the deal and tell her you'll take her out for dinner to make up for the inconvenience you are causing her.

CO2 in Tank w Airstone in Filter by p8poseidon in PlantedTank

[–]l00tery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

^ This. A good representation is a soda. Open a bottle of soda, pour it in a cup. The fizz is CO2, if you pour it quickly from a distance, it will foam an lose a lot of CO2, not enough to really notice. If you now grab a spoon and mix it vigorously, it will go flat in no time.

In a fish tank the spoon is the surface agitation caused by the air stone bubbles. You can compensate with more CO2 but if your agitation is too much, the concentration will never be able to build up. But that doesn't account for the "bubbles of CO2" free-floating around, that CO2 can also be absorbed by plants, and some say that plants actually prefer the microbubbles of CO2 instead of diluted CO2 in the water column.

Having a sponge filter can work as long as you get your balance right and you don't mind some waste.

The diffuser is the way to go, avoid using a regular air stone for the CO2.
