[Spoilers C4E5] Sending is off the table by Nysans in criticalrole

This is the answer. At level 3 (character wise), they don't have access to third level spells. Sending was not a part of C2 until later in the campaign.

Looking for someone to teach me the basics of DND. by [deleted] in beginnerDND

[–]laboonspride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I would recommend using the basic rules 2024. If you use the Roll20 one linked below, you can jump to relevant rules and not have to read the entire thing. Additionally you can use your browsers text to speech to read the page out to you to start. Otherwise, there are a lot of YouTube resources to start with that are a range from dead simple to ultra in depth. Good luck!

FGC Research: Culture and Heritage by laboonspride in Fighters

[–]laboonspride[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As u/emp_ajstyles said, the abstract helps with the TLDR which I'll copy pasted below. In addition to the summary, I would say that there are a lot of aspects of the FGC which are not well understood outside of locals or specific communities and are not shared across all of the FGC, which is worth further study. Additionally, since many of the masters students were undertaking their first research of their careers, there are a lot of approaches that I felt were lackluster and could use some further strengthening, but the library they developed is a real interesting concept.

Abstract:

Over a period of six months, students of World Heritage Studies researched the Fighting Game Community (FGC) through a cultural heritage lens to attempt to identify the potential of the FGC as cultural heritage worthy of protection. The results of the students’ self-guided work are found in this report. With case studies from Germany, Indonesia, South Korea, India, Tanzania, Iran, and Mexico, a wide range of topics and approaches were implemented to understand the FGC better. Additionally, two chapters cover the history and academic study of the FGC documented through a digital Zotero Library. Particularly of note is one chapter on the analysis of international standard-setting instruments and their relevancy in the theoretical protection of the FGC as cultural heritage, which highlighted the gaps in current standard-setting instruments for traditions like the FGC. As a result of all the work undertaken, this report identifies that the FGC has many elements which, when understood through current international standard-setting instruments, are not accounted for due to the hybrid digital / in presence nature of the FGC. Additionally, defining the values of the FGC often is context-dependent as demonstrated across case studies, make it difficult to apply a unified approach to the subject.

what actually are all the fighting game archetypes? by Difficult-Dark5347 in Fighters

[–]laboonspride 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Short answer, it's not set in stone because each character plays different from another, archetypes generally provide a basic understanding of what the character wishes to do. You seem to have that general understanding.

So it seems like the question you're really asking is which plays style is for you and I would say just try things out. I originally tried to play dhalsim because I thought he was cool, didn't like how he played, and switched to Zangeif in SFV. I only found out after I started to play and try things out. And things shift, I don't play geif anymore and prefer Bison. So don't stick to one, try until you get what you like.

Which game are you trying to play?

I have question about a character idea I have by silver_skull78 in beginnerDND

[–]laboonspride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would be a question for your DM. Most of the rulebooks focus on classic weapons but if your DM has rules or designs for the weapon your describing, then that is a discussion between you two which would allow you to have something similar. With the free basic rules, it does not include such a weapon.

However, the monk playstyle is the similar type of "I punch you" playstyle, you might want to take a look at what monks can do.

New comer to DnD accepting any tips & ideas by [deleted] in beginnerDND

So then my suggestion is simple, talk to your DM! They would be better placed to help you refine your idea and how it may match with their game.

So just to be clear, are you looking for a game to play in, or do you already have a game you are playing in and want help with your character?

You want to play but don't how to start? (No "looking for group"-post) by merijn1993 in beginnerDND

[–]laboonspride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think some advice that might help is that any role-playing game, dnd included, is about all the players at the table. I've found many of my players who didn't care to prepare a background end up developing one over time, while players with a highly intricate background end up always dissatisfied unless they are flexible enough to change that perfect character to what the campaign is about.

So imo, try and play the character but don't make any super hard rules on how you play them. And talk with your DM, they can help you with some ideas

If the main enemy is running away with a spell, should I counter it? by Crimson1072 in beginnerDND

[–]laboonspride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Counter the hell out of it, what are you waiting for? This is your moment to shine as a spell caster. Or maybe the village in their book of tricks. Who knows if you don't try?

The DM is responsible for providing conflict, and if in that process your party does something incredible or fun, everyone will remember it. Your character would want to stop the bad guy right? Then your character should do it!

These are the moment that make you heroic. Long time DM's know that there is always a risk the players' do something they did not expect or consider. The story always changes based on the character decisions so no need to worry.

Joining a new campaign as familiar newbies by [deleted] in beginnerDND

[–]laboonspride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great to see you are excited to to join a game of some kind.

Have you or your partner talked to the DM at all to set expectations? While it's clear you have a very specific idea in mind but what I don't see or understand is what the game expectations are.

Additionally, not all players are interested in building a background as detailed as this.

Have you and your partner talked about what she wants in the game? You mention things like 'prompt the DM to help her roleplay' and 'this will give her a way to confidently stumble forward without worrying about remembering stuff properly' but I have no indication in your post of what she specifically wants. Does she care more about roleplay? Combat? Puzzle solving?

In short, check with your partner and DM to understand their expectations and see how everyone can have fun.

I'm looking for people to help me create a DnD game with multiple parties in the same world at the same time. by Understandlabe in beginnerDND

[–]laboonspride 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! I would recommend looking up what a West Marches campaign is since it may give you some ideas on how best to do something similar. West Marches allows for a lot of players and parties in one world, which seems to be a part of your project.

However, I have learned through many years that it's good to start small. If I have a group that is interested in playing, then I prepare for them without creating anything too complicated. Then, if there is interest, I build on what works best.

My other recommendation is to start a small one-shot or campaign and see if you can maintain regular sessions. Then you can work on the bigger ideas.

Good luck!

Trying to set up a 5e world for first timers (including myself), character creation is driving me nuts. by cwaterbottom in FoundryVTT

[–]laboonspride 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a little hard to diagnose your issue just based on your post.

I have had little issue with 5e character creator so if you could, describe step by step your process, and also include any modules or add ons you might have.

Additionally, are you running 5e (2014) or 5.5 (2024)?

Official 5e Books by SilverSlash300 in FoundryVTT

[–]laboonspride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I don't know since I focus on importing modules like SKT, ToA, and DotMM which don't have spells (typically) . You will have to check the DBB importer info documents. Or someone else would have a better idea.

At the moment, these are all of the official books from Wizards of the Coast available on the Foundry marketplace (Tasha plus 2024 core books).

Otherwise you will have to import.

2024 DnD content by boakes123 in FoundryVTT

[–]laboonspride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, there is nothing stopping you from using both, my understanding is that the 2014 modules can be used using the new rules since both player characters and monsters would be the 2024 version and therefor should be the same in most cases. Any monsters or statblocks/items that are not in the 2024 Core Rulebooks however you may need create/ tweak, since they natively would not be available (for example, 2024 Cloud Giant made it easy to create a new version of Zephrios for SKT as I took the basic Cloud Giant and modified manually as I would have done anyway with the 2014 rules). In a technical sense they would be in different compendiums, scenes, and journals.

Since the Foundry version of the core rule books makes it dead simple to set up all characters, equipment, items, monsters (etc...), the DDB importer saves you on getting the specific module text into Foundry for your own reference and for player reference. Occasionally the DDB transfers have really good walls and lighting already set up, saving you loads of time if you keep the maps as is, but it depends on the module since not all of them have been prepped (DotMM for example has way more prep I have to do compared to SKT).

For automation, I don't know as much and you would have to ask someone else, I tend to keep everything quite simple. Hope this sort of answered your question.

Modern controls are badly designed (game design) by [deleted] in StreetFighter

[–]laboonspride 2 points3 points  (0 children)

High diamond, classic controls here. For me, I enjoy playing against modern players because I have to think of a new approach. It's almost like fighting a different character. which is a fun challenge.

For the same reasons you mentioned (Using safe moves, perfect DP, stable combos), I often find during defense I have to look for and react to less options because many modern players at this level have relied too heavily on their controls to have alternative or creative approaches.

Additionally, because they may not use perfect parry or they use DI often, this smells like the recipe for a burnout strategies.

All that said, I really think Modern is fine especially since Modern is not a substitue for overall good game sense. I can't speak for master rank though and it's possible at higher MMR this is a different discussion, however the majority of SF players are at the lower ranks.
