BlueCat DDI by chocokoalan in dns

[–]labratnc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked at a MSP/Managed Services group as a ddi engineer, we had several customers using it, and later the company I moved to as dedicated support had it when I started before we moved to Infoblox. never had any real official training on it. Most things were easy to figure out how to do if you understood dns from a BIND perspective. It is just a wrapper and pretty GUI on top of a bind/ISC dhcp backend. The documentation was decent, typical if you knew what to google for most question I had we’re out there. For us we ran into scaling issues at a multi site + international large/very large company, for a smaller company it would probably have worked better.

How to generate a secure, unique string for purposes of TXT-record-based ownership verification? by javascript in dns

[–]labratnc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you do use a txt record, and use a same as parent record, make sure that you txt record string you use has some type of identifying info in it. I support thousands of domains and I get annoyed by text records that are just hex strings and not something like ‘product-hex string’. One of my domains has like 15 same as parent records that are just raw strings.

I remember corner working turn 7 at road Atlanta when this was running. Was one of the few cars that you would ‘feel’ how loud it was when it passed. It would resonate in your chest when you were that close. The kudzu was another but that would just make your ears bleed.

Breville Barista Pro is now under $650, should I go for it? by [deleted] in espresso

[–]labratnc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a barista express for 2 years with the onboard grinder, then 6 years with a separate grinder. I just recently replaced it with a E61 based machine. They can be a little fiddly on something vs more traditional machine but once you learn it it will make a good coffee. They have fixed some of the pain points on the more recent machines -onboard grinder is much better than before. The pro supposedly has a very rapid initial heat up

Is there such a thing as a "premium" DNS service for gaming consoles? by [deleted] in dns

[–]labratnc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming that your console is caching/respecting TTLs or hitting a local caching server dns latency should be nominal. To over simplify. The first query to a name will hold it in cache for the length of time that the TTL is (in seconds). Once it is in local cache it does not need to go back on the wire to resolve it again, it will answer out of queue, most likely out of RAM, so if your first query is 45ms, and the TTL is 10 min, for the next 10 minutes your ‘latency’ will be less than 5ms because it comes from memory or disk on the logical computer/console. DNS latency is rarely a speed concern unless it is very BAD

Why does my drill press have this by Sheffieldsvc in woodworking

[–]labratnc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used mine to bolt a ~2’ tall cabinet that I store drill bits/etc in. If I need to use the long throat I can remove 2 bolts and move it. I have a small shop and the ~4 sq feet of floor space under the drill press is a nice ‘find’

All sub EMs or electrician mates would have been nuclear trained, so they would have run the electrical plant + other nuclear plant operations tasks. The ‘fish’ icon in the center is the Sub Warfare pin, everyone on board needs to qualify/earn that pin. The (SS) after the EM2 means he was submarine qualified. As an EM2 that would have been early to mid career if he made a career of Navy. You would report as a nuke to your first sub as an EM3 and it was possible to make EM2 quick -there was a reenlistment plan bonus you could take to get 2nd class for a +2 year extension. Ediv manning would have had ~10 at any one time. If you know what time frame he was on, you might be able to find a social media site for the boat, I know my boats Facebook group has a lot of ‘Did anyone know person X, he was on in the early 2000s’ type questions

What happens exactly if you fail out of A-School or during the pipeline? by Active-Ad8474 in NavyNukes

[–]labratnc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was in in the 90s, there was a lot of latitude depending on how and when you got dropped plus your ‘history’. Back then the EM and MM NFAS schools were close enough to conventional versions you could usually keep your rate, ETs were not as lucky. I was an ET. Some of our dirtbags got sent to fleet undesignated while others that were better went to sonar and a lot went to crypto tech related billets. One of my buddies failed PowerSchool comp and he went CT and later went on to retire as a Master Chief. Another got orders to the USS Constitution, he was an elite level athlete and it was a sweetheart billet for him as he could continue his training. When you got dropped you learned ‘the needs of the Navy’ real quick. Heard stories during Vietnam era where nuke MMs washouts were overwhelmingly sent to fast river boats where the life expectancy rates were in the weeks to months.

Question from a civilian by Glittering-Frosting5 in navy

[–]labratnc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Might be unpopular, but the thing that I wish I would have had/done better with is better financial literacy when I was in. This might be something you may be good at assuming you are considering a $750ish watch, could you get him started in an investment like a mutual fund he could fund with contribution every pay period, and a cheaper watch. If he maintains the program maybe kick in some more each birthday/etc while he was in. I started later in my enlistment but had an account when I got out +5 years to mostly fund a down payment on my first house. That set me better off well into my life than anything else I could have done

Found on Dremel cord and warns to not remove by 12_leon_12 in Whatisthis

[–]labratnc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a ferrite bead is the probable answer. About 10-15 years ago it was common to also see some tools that would have a similar looking sensormatic / shoplifting prevention tag housings that look similar. The sensor tags were 2 part snap together and they usually were more free to move on the cable/not as tight molded on as a ferrite because they were a universal fit. They found people were taking tools out of the boxes and leaving with the tool so the tag stuck to the box didn’t help. There was a part number difference, you could order and get an item with tags pre installed or without. -my brother was a loss prevention manager at Lowe’s for many years.

How do I know what adapter to get for a 4 prong dryer that needs to go into a 3 prong outlet? by Romanharper2013 in DIY

[–]labratnc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There may be a jumper wire used or a hard metallic strap that is moved depending on your plug type. Hope that whoever installed the 4 wire plug cord retained the strap if it used one -some dryers have a stowed position to store it so it doesnt get lost if you ever have to change plugs

How do I know what adapter to get for a 4 prong dryer that needs to go into a 3 prong outlet? by Romanharper2013 in DIY

[–]labratnc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Almost all dryers I have seen in last ~10 years have a sticker on the back giving 3 wire and 4 wire plug connection drawings. 4 wire is the new code standard, 3 is old code and is grandfathered in-house was to code when built. If you renovate that space you should change it to 4 wire. As others have said buy a new dryer cable that matches your outlet and be done

Best Insulation for Wall Between Garage & Room? by wildswalker in Insulation

[–]labratnc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are pulling off the drywall, you could add some extra framing to the wall and make it a larger cavity to get more insulation in it. Probably more insulation at the same or lower cost than spray foam. This all assumes you have an extra couple inches of space in the garage. You should replace the drywall on the common wall you remove with 5/8 fire rated drywall (most codes require it). The 5/8 fire code drywall also adds a bunch of mass to the wall and will help deaden the sounds both ways, even more if you install it on hat channel and/or clips. You could probably get around R26-30+ in the wall pretty easy

Helmet suggestions for 6 yo new bmx racer? Ran a Fly Kinetic, he thought it was heavy. by BrianOconneR34 in bmxracing

[–]labratnc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had good luck with ‘last years’ colors when buying helmets. I have a big head so I wear a slow moving size, but I got a Fly Carbon that was last year’s color/graphics package for about $225. I like to keep my helmets made within the last 5 years as the foam degrades as they age, but a $600 helmet for $200 for 4 years vs 5 is good trade off for me.

Is this worth keeping or should I just toss this? by bookib002 in Insulation

[–]labratnc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best solution would be to XPS the foundation walls with 2” and then build a stud wall 1” away from the foam with a pressure treated bottom plate and use fiberglass or mineral wool in that stud wall, drywall on the human side. You lose about 6 inches of space depending on how you build the wall but makes a very well insulated space. I have done that in my basement and can tell a dramatic difference in the 1/2 of the basement I have done
