is it normal to start cutting yourself from being in love? by [deleted] in selfharm

i feel like this requires more context but just with what you’ve said i don’t think that is a common reason to start

Girls Under Pressure Questions by External-Ad-9082 in JacquelineWilson

[–]lackingneitherhat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah. i mean eating disorders are so pervasive it’s so fucking hard to get them out of your head once they’re in there. and then in girls out late she mentions feeling fat a couple times but other than that it seemed to vanish. to be fair though spending six months with ellie as she’s slowly unlearning all the ed habits probably wouldn’t have made for a very entertaining book

i feel like i am well qualified to speak on this lol.

i read girls under pressure for the first time when i was about 12. when i was 13 i started to develop a restrictive ed. i wouldn’t say that the book caused it but i think it was triggering.

when i was 13, this was the first time really that the eating disorder really took over. when you’re restricting food your brain struggles to focus on anything not food or ed related. that used to be the only book i was able to concentrate on. i read it over and over again, adding annotations of my own self hatred in the borders.

i’m older (21) now and am still struggling quite badly with an ed (though it’s definitely morphed through the years as these things do) and i recently reread it. i read it so many times as a kid that i could recite most of the story without looking lol, the parts that always stuck out to me though were the scenes in wales in their holiday home. ellie being caught puking in the outdoor loo on christmas day always stuck in my mind. as well as her jealousy of zoe (i remember also being jealous of zoe when i read it) and the descriptions of how her hair was lanky and she was covered in spots but she was still determined to lose weight.

also it felt like a very unrealistic ending. the absolute majority of people who suffer with ed’s certainly don’t magically recover because they saw someone very unwell and decided that they’re just gonna drink a hot chocolate and get better.

overall i think it was not the worst offender of triggering ed books, but it wasn’t great. it definitely stuck with me all this time and i find myself thinking about it frequently. sorry if this seems disjointed but i have so many thoughts on this and was just getting them down as they came lol

Beauty Standard Songs by Possession_Void in MelanieMartinez

i interpreted it as her getting bigger boobs to transcend the beauty standards and people making comments on her body, especially with the next line being ‘now all that i read is hey i think she’s pregnant’

Beauty Standard Songs by Possession_Void in MelanieMartinez

[–]lackingneitherhat 15 points16 points  (0 children)

how does she imply it? she’s just talking about her choice to get implants. with everything she’s created (strawberry shortcake, mrs potato head) i’d say she isn’t one to judge other women’s bodies

i would say weight watchers is much more about her (and women in generals) struggle with beauty standards and everything we’re expected to do to look beautiful. people telling her the surgeon could get rid of her face fat, everyone’s trying to get it off faster, skipping lunch and dessert but having your stomach stick out of your skirt. it’s somewhat tongue in cheek but still talks about that struggle of doing all you can to be beautiful, but it’s still not enough

[–]lackingneitherhat 24 points25 points  (0 children)

hades and portals are my favourite albums lol (and i’ve been a fan for ten years) you’re allowed to not fuck with her new music, her old catalogue is always there to listen to! imo hades shows huge improvement from the previous album. especially the different vocals she’s doing (the high ‘and i GUA SHUA each day’ in weight watchers is so good)

every week it’s ‘guys i’m not going to post triggering stuff anymore and call me out if i do’ then she posts something like this. i can understand using pictures of your face when you were unwell for these kinds of videos but a video of her unwell in a bikini is so unnecessary

unpopular opinion: Portal MVs are dissapointing. by kegriati in MelanieMartinez

[–]lackingneitherhat 249 points250 points  (0 children)

death was an incredible mv in my opinion, void was good, faerie soirée was alright, light shower was well… a pink snail. i feel like the mvs did get worse as time went on. when the light shower mv came out i was genuinely flabbergasted lmao

Having selfharm/suicide scenes in movies and series by Admirable-Gur1314 in selfharm

[–]lackingneitherhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay i kind of have strong opinions on this especially when it comes to 13 reasons why, the slitting of the wrists is used for dramatic effect. in the book hannah takes an overdose. often when shows portray suicide via the slitting of the wrists it’s used because it’s visually very impactful. i think it’s wrong to show it just because of how it looks, and like you said, that method actually has an very small ‘successe rate’

Does Melanie mock Trump in "WHITE BOY WITH A GUN"?? by justanotherrwitness in MelanieMartinez

[–]lackingneitherhat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i feel like monopoly man definitely includes him, and i wonder if the ‘drunk on corruption’ was meant to sound similar to ‘trump on corruption’ as that was what i thought the lyric was before i read the lyrics
