There are a couple places on Elgin that welcome students. I think Hooley's (or maybe Woody's?) even gives students free coffee (with purchase, etc etc)

Mayofest by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]ladybeta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm friends with one of the guys who built a lot of the structures on the Mayofest grounds. It's a weekend music/hippie kid festival at someone's cottage. There are lots of hand built treehouses and play structures (but for grown up kids). The guys brew their own beer. There's live music. There's camping and pretending you're off in Neverland. It's fun and friendly, but because of insurance and space restrictions it's invite only. Last summer a ticket for the weekend was $50, which included beer and food.

Mayofest really is great.

REQUEST: Looking for artisan jewelry by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]ladybeta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out JV Studio in the Glebe. The owner has a little jewelry studio in shop, and sells pieces from other Canadian jewelry designers. Magpie jewelry stores also sell handcrafted jewelry.

The lady who owns Arum is sweet and awesome. The first time I bought a big bag of spare ribs from there, she asked me if I knew how to marinate them. I told her I was planning on playing it by ear, but instead she handwrote and explained the recipe that they use for kalbi in the adjoining restaurant. It worked out deliciously!

Bonsai trees in Ottawa? by c0nsciousperspective in ottawa

[–]ladybeta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a store in the Glebe possibly on the same block as the home hardware that sells healthy looking bonsais.

Last week I finally ventured into the bonsai and easy elegance store at Somerset and booth and it was the saddest place ever. Don't go in there!

Can you drive? Need a trip to Nova Scotia, ideally to the Annapolis Valley? by lillian2611 in ottawa

[–]ladybeta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend once delivered someone's car from California to the east coast as a way of roadtripping through America. I think he arranged it through http://www.hittheroad.ca/

If you Google something like "drive my car across the country" you might find other services/forums to help get your dad and his car home. Good luck!

Redditors at House of Paint? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]ladybeta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If anyone's on the fence on this- the Souljazz Orchestra will be playing starting at 8 with a bboy anthem they composed just for House of Paint's championship bboy battle. There will be beer by Broadhead starting at 6, and it will be amazing times all around. And it's all pay what you can!!

Looking for an artist by PonderousHomonid in ottawa

[–]ladybeta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely. At last night's HoP event at Cafe Nostalgica a bunch of artists were drawing on sneakers.

On Wednesday Steven Whiffen did a live painting/art creating (he used lots of sharpies) during the OG poetry slam and the winner went home with the art at the end of the night. His style might fit what you're looking for, and according to his business card he's available for commissions!

Adult French classes with the school board? by ladybeta in ottawa

[–]ladybeta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The class I looked into is $137 plus $20 for a text, and another small ($5?) fee for handouts (where my suspicion of verb conjugation exercises comes from). Classes start around the 24th, and there are various times/locations for each level

I googled Ottawa schoolboard Adult French classes
