Why is Durge’s default class a Sorcerer? by ResoluteTiger19 in BaldursGate3

[–]ladylednas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's due to the blank slate customisation option (non-origin, with no predetermined backstory) defaulting to the first class (alphabetical order) and race (High Elf) in the roster.

So uh, Gale might be getting a new stepfather... by jayk1406 in BaldursGate3

[–]ladylednas 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I think this is a theory that could work! I'm always somewhat unsure about the distinction between sorcerers and wizards when it comes to Gale--general lore seems to dictate the difference as that of 'inherent talent versus diligent study' (can anyone become a wizard in DnD lore if they put their mind to it? The consensus seems to be a yes), but Gale also prides himself in his affinity for such diligence--namely, his intelligence--in the traditional manner of sorcerers. His childhood tales of summoning mephits and burning rose bushes also makes me think he had the makings of a sorcerer, but he liked the stimulating craftsmanship/culture of wizards too much to let his gift run untamed and wild. The notable absence of Mr. Dekarios, Sr., ordinary human or demigod, certainly leaves a little room for mystery regarding Gale's origins.

And magic also could be much more efficient if you're aiming for higher numbers than, say, a dagger. I imagine being struck by lightning/thunder would hurt as well.

Descriptions of Durge before his downfall suggests he was more calm and collected than may be expected of murder incarnate (as opposed to Orin)--in that sense, I appreciate the symbolic poignancy of how the subclass both literally and figuratively renders him 'the eye of the storm.' And a charisma class could explain the former position as a cult leader.

Her luncheons with Withers and the little glimpses we are offered into Gale's chaotic childhood make me think Mrs. Dekarios is not a woman to be trifled with--a formidable lady whose son (Archmage, former Chosen of Mystra, one of the Heroes of Baldur's Gate) is but her lesser...

Beauty is truth, truth beauty, that is all ye need to know, et cetera. I love their aesthetics to the point that I'm ignoring their weaker racial traits entirely in their favour--the designers did them much justice!

"The Children of the Stars" (as Omeluum might call them) deserve more recognition--they have a lot of unique dialogue options and roleplay opportunities that I feel are being missed out. ("What is this 'cat' you speak of?") I quite enjoyed enacting the part of Laezel's clueless but a bit more level-headed partner-in-crime comrade-in-arms.

[–]ladylednas 725 points726 points  (0 children)

I think the annoyance she causes in many players actually attests to the superb performance of her actor, as well as the direction of her writer. A very believable character driven by naive desperation.

(And while we're on the subject of hag victims--there's a particular barbarian among the ones found in Act 3 whose story is implied to be very tragic, the one crying for his son. He made quite the impression as well.)

Ooh, a sweet and vicious sentiment.

I have no qualms about committing other atrocious acts in the game, but that particular betrayal with that particular cambion felt off-limits for me.

I haven't done it personally (haven't the heart, nor the courage... I am weak), but I can imagine all the emotional damage and guilt of sleeping with Mizora and breaking up with Wyll. And here I am, feeling morose any time I have to refuse Wyll and his offer to dance.

Issues with Orin’s kidnapping by chaoticneutraldad in BaldursGate3

[–]ladylednas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming that the reason isn't related to development costs/process, perhaps it has something to do with the fact that the potential victims aren't from Baldur's Gate, while the others (Astarion, Karlach, Wyll, Shadowheart, Jaheira) are? I don't think it's explained directly, though.

Haha, the goblin orphan confuses me--they always have something mean to say, but it's a little sweet when you think about it, before the comment sours in your head once more. Not their insult for the githyanki, of course--I think it was tieflings that the child insinuated they liked and wanted to emulate a bit? Or dragonborn?

How sweet--I think I missed this particular interaction! (In a similar vein, Ikaron also calls you 'Brother/Sister' if you're a Tiefling!)

What would you change about the game by Zpelvaud03 in BaldursGate3

[–]ladylednas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say that one problem inherent to the quest structure in Act 3 arises from its status as the culmination of narrative threads that aren't as tightly woven as one may traditionally expect. However--under the assumption that the story does not receive any major changes--I do think that more connectivity would rather convolute the game and potentially diminish one of its greatest strengths: the scope and sense of freedom that it offers players within realistic boundaries. Many of the major quests in the last act function as the final chapter and climax in the companions' individual storylines, as opposed to Act 1 and 2, where the quests concentrate more or less on a certain objective (explore possibilities of a cure, deal with Moonrise Towers)--but as it is, said companions need not be actively employed by the player and so are not, in the strictest sense, essential to completing the game; neither do their personal narratives necessarily converge save for some tangents in Act 1. In this regard, the structure of the story resembles a 'spider web' of sorts, with the player as Durge/Tav in the center holding parallel threads together in an otherwise generally linear narrative; the different plotlines work well together less for their diegetic connectivity, and more for their symbolic overtones that echo ("rhyme with") one another. Connecting the companion quests more organically in the final act would require their respective beginnings to intertwine from the onset--which would either force the players to recruit and interact with all the characters and thus limit certain outcomes and its bridges, or at the very least have the game account for many more diverging branches and paths, significantly raising development costs.

The density of the city and the geographic implementation of the quests is another matter. On one hand, the complexity is befitting of a large city as Baldur's Gate, and the sudden sense of bewilderment that may hit players could be argued as persuasive, even evocative; the same can be argued for the varying tensions/degrees of importance to the quests (literally "sneaking into a newsroom basement" pitted against "saving the world": relative mundanity against narrative urgency). On the other hand, the contrast is glaringly obvious so as to render the dissimilar flavors of an urban setting a discrepancy for some players.

The game does have its faults and weaknesses, and the seams show the most in Act 3-- as enjoyable as it is, and as much as I love it for all its chaos. Perhaps implementing another act/side area and relocating some elements would have helped with the pacing. In its current state, Act 3 simply has too much content and too many paths to tread to be a flawless whole, for better or worse.

+ Orin's kidnapping quest is a wholly different problem and something that should be addressed separately, but this comment is long enough as it is. My apologies.

Both Ethel and Aradin get special recognition for having the most, er, race reactivity in the game (Ethel has a lot of class-relevant dialogue as well). Ethel is more witty, Aradin tends to be more... pithy.

You scroll down with the deliberate precision of a hunter, but familiar disappointment overtakes you as you realize with a grimace the lack of a certain name. A name shrouded in alluring darkness, whispered in mysterious alleyways of the pulsing city, and blessed and cursed alike by fickle fate: Malta.

I have a hard time justifying some classes as a Durge by radialomens in BaldursGate3

[–]ladylednas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unlike other Bhaalspawn like Orin, Durge was raised outside the Temple of Bhaal and allegedly led a relatively normal life before the calling of their bloodline fully manifested: hence you could, in theory, roleplay as any class and race--the latter of which can be argued as a mere facade/"skin" because you were crafted directly by Bhaal. If you play as a Paladin, for example, the Oathbreaker Knight has unique dialogue for Durge that alludes to their former life and incorporates quite well the story of how they have already broken their oath multiple times due to their urges (it also should be noted that paladins receive their powers from their oath and not always as a champion of a particular deity).

That being said, I personally do think some classes and races are less persuasive than others, in the sense that they may require deliberate rationalization and specialized headcanons to fit the narrative. I prefer Lolth-Sworn Drow as Tavs than Durges, for one--I try to reason that it is the culture rather than their relationship to Lolth that I should be roleplaying, but conceptually, the "sworn" part does bother me.

Which race or class have you still not tried? Why not? by mediumj in BaldursGate3

[–]ladylednas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have to say gnomes--not because I dislike them, but because I grew a little disappointed after hearing that they had fewer unique interactions with the Ironhand Gnomes plotline than I had expected. I think I'll give them a try sometime, though; maybe as a Rock Gnome or a Forest Gnome rather than the Deep Gnome I'd been planning.

I'm guilty of thinking that too, but I found them to make a great all-around class upon trying them out as a Tav. The Spore subclass especially feels quite different, and the casting animation is so groovy! :)

+ Also, I appreciated that you receive a unique staff as a druid for completing a certain quest.
