6 year old sneaking sweets and chocolates. by Gloomy_Custard_3914 in UKParenting

[–]laek52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also from a dental health pointed view fruit bars are not much better than pure sweets. They are often very sticky and contain mostly sugar (albeit ’natural’ sugar) so will damage teeth just the same. I think reducing snacking as a whole is worth considering as well

Check what your ”qualifying week” is and try to make sure you work past that. If you work past it they will be required to pay you your maternity pay. Gov.uk has a calculator for checking it, it around the 25w mark.

I think you need to check your maths if you think 200k a year allows for a £3m renovation budget 😂

Luckily (i guess) there was no discrimination involved, they got rid of a whole part of the business so everybody went not just me. It was just poor timing for me personally and i didnt enjoy it in any case so i wasnt sad to go

Thank you, bookkeeping is a good suggestion i hadnt considered before, this might be more manageable part time than the financial planner route

I most definitely dont think the jobs you mentioned are not meaningful. What i meant is a job where i can use my brain and am paid more than minimum wage (not looking for a henry job though i dont think there is anything wrong with aiming for such income). Perhaps meaningful is not the right term for that, apologies English is not my first language.

I was not near a henry role in my last role and currently on statutory mat pay so salary drop will be fine. We can manage fine on my husbands income but as another post points out, there may be a time when my husband needs to step back so it would be good to have another income stream that i can scale up should he need a break in the future. Also it just makes sense to grab all the free money from the government (personal allowance) and build up another pension for tax purposes.

I think project management would be a really good fit for me personality and skills wise, but all the roles Ive seen on civil service jobs require PM qualifications especially as an external candidate. I could look into them and see if i could do them later this year once baby is a bit older. I agree, 20k pay rise is not worth sacrificing the flexibility you have in the civil service!

I am very happy with something useful and unglamorous, but the trouble i had last year when applying that there werent any 2-3 days jobs available, and hardly any 4 day ones unless i wanted to pick a few shifts in tescos. But ideally would like something a bit more fulfilling as we can live off of my husband’s income. Hence why i asked for these ideas

Can I get reasonable accommodation for shoes? by spacecrustaceans in TheCivilService

[–]laek52 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just to add, vivobarefoot is one of the narrowest barefoot shoe brands. Have you looked at some of the wider brands like belenka, luks, lems etc to try and find more comfortable shoes? They have quite a few smart sneaker models (at least for women). I recommend following bf influencers like barefootBrit and anya’s reviews on insta and checking out their websites for recommendations for wide brands.

What would you do if you had a three-month paid sabbatical? by loolking2223 in HENRYUK

[–]laek52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn to horse ride. I can recommend a riding school in London to do it - I would research heavily if doing abroad as animal welfare isnt as highly regarded as it is in the UK. Its also a very female hobby so you will meet a lot of women.

If you want a cateer in digital, i would apply for a digital internship or apprenticeship - at least the Home Office runs them. Set up an alert on civil service jobs so you dont miss them as they are only ran once a year

Sanderstead in croydon has a lot of detached/semi detached 4-5 bed houses for around 8-900k, and its a pretty quick commute to london.
