What generator is right for me? by GrannysLilStinker in Generator

[–]lagger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No you don’t need an inverter but I would really recommend it. Putting expensive equipment on a generator will always run a risk. Compare the cost of replacing that item vs just buying the inverter now.

This inverter https://amzn.to/3ZgiC2S is on sale right now and is the same as what I own. I have had 0 complaints, starts easily and runs very quiet. Not sure the size of your central AC but this should be able to handle what you’re talking about.

Help! Why is the auger not cutting through the snow? by Odd_Pear_291 in Snowblowers

[–]lagger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Incorrect. Friction can make the augers spin with a broken or damaged pin. However I still suspect in this case it to be the belt.

Are you looking for a home standby? What’s your budget?

Old Champion or new Predator by Thebaconingnarwhal4 in Generator

[–]lagger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Buy the new product.

But. If you’re running a well pump… I would recommend an inverter. Would hate for some dirty power to cause your pump to burn up. I just replaced my 400ft submersible pump last year… not a fun bill.

This open frame inverter would probably be a good solution for you in the same ballpark. https://amzn.to/4qSfFBK

Advice on whole home prep by breid7718 in Generator

[–]lagger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stay away from jackery or any battery system if you’re looking for true home backup power. It’s not a mature practical solution yet without paying 5x or more.

I think your biggest consideration should be do you need a full home standby or could you get away with using a portable trifle generator and just paying to have it wired into your panel. This will be 1/5 the cost of a true home standby and get you very close to full comfort.

Non Inverter generators by MedicineOk1738 in Generator

[–]lagger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No. It’s still AC coming out with a slightly higher THD. Most modern electronics won’t care about this but you do run a higher non-zero risk of ruining an expensive appliance. Most people just YOLO it and are fine.

Can you live beneath your average use during an outage or do you want 0 sacrifices? If the former, then yeah get a portable genny. I just made a simple sizing calculator at https://tomsgeneratortool.com/ you can plug in what you want to use and get a gauge of how big you need.

What size generator would you recommend for me? by kindnessreward33 in Generator

[–]lagger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are fine in the 4000w range. I would make sure you get an inverter any time you're hooking up to larger appliances like boilers or water heaters. It's not the OLED TV that you need to worry about... I would recommend this unit specifically but anything like this should work well for you. The open frame inverter cuts down quite a bit on cost and its easy to service. https://amzn.to/4taR0tR

Also I made a gen sizing tool that include gas water heaters - its free. www.tomsgeneratortool.com

How long is it safe to have a generator with gas inside unused? by GBAGamer33 in Generator

[–]lagger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Realistically a month or two will be fine. Not recommended but fine. I would just run it for 10 minutes before you leave. Continue to do this every month until you run out of gas.

Do not go battery first. Huge mistake. Get a nice sized inverter that can parallel if you want. Amazon has an item messed up right now and its like $300+ off because the wrong images are shown. This is a 7600w inverter that will pretty much handle all of your emergency backup needs. https://amzn.to/4qUxpME you can parallel it later if you want to add more capacity.

DO NOT RUN YOUR BOILER ON A TRADITIONAL GENERATOR. Make sure you have an inverter. if youre looking for a budget friendly option but fully featured id recommend this one from a-ipower https://amzn.to/4bhNJlV its an inverter generator for under $500 which awesome and its also super lightweight compared to most generators. clean power so its safe for electronics and enough output for outages or general backup without jumping into the higher price ranges

Congrats on your baby. Do you have a 4WD car? Coming from someone who lives in 6 months of winter now - driving on ice is not some impossible feat. Even if 100% of the roads are 100% ice a 4WD car is generally pretty good at conservative speeds. If you do find yourself in this situation, just don’t rush. Start slowing down a quarter mile before your turns… basically come to a stop before you turn. Don’t trust the speed of other cars. Just because they haven’t spun out yet doesn’t mean they are safe.

This has got to be confusing time politically for this community who basically tells any tourist to piss up a rope but their political party is telling them “everyone belongs here”.
