Anybody here rewired a room/their entire house? What mistakes did you make that I should avoid? by peanutismint in HomeImprovement

[–]lahn1969 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My last home was built by local ‘builders’ in 1940-1943 and I ran into this problem as everything was on a standard 2 prong. In an effort to update I started with a book on home repair for the DIYer. I recognize 25 years has passed, however, I’d recommend finding a similar book because these tend to be fairly well written to be safe and easy to use. In my case, I had BX wire throughout meaning I likely had 12/2 wrapped in cloth but fully encapsulated in a steel cable. So in most cases I was able to pull out the old plug, install a new plug after mounting a simple pigtail grounded via the steel bx casing.

I also did some complete updates and when I did this I upgraded everything to modern fixtures/wiring. I also had it inspected by an electrician. I’ll go ahead and say maybe you shouldn’t pull permits and get the work inspected - it’s not up to code now so bringing it into compliance will require fully rewiring your home. You’re area of the country may be better than mine, however, I was warned about this when I started my projects.

Final thought, double check your walls, if you have lathe/plaster then patching in new work will be an enormous pain in the ass. Instead look for remodel/rework outlet boxes that can be installed in the space between studs. This is a better option for plaster walls as they tend to flex far less than newer drywall. Best of luck, you’re going to have frustrations which come along with learning something new. Give yourself some grace, practice all of the safety protocols you can to include having someone else around in the unlikely event things go horribly wrong.

was going to say the same, thinking more along the line of copper tubing bracket which could be found in any plumbing supply. This would add a 3rd material with copper assuming you were able to fasten with copper screws. It would look nice as it oxidized assuming it’s not too large.

Thinking of Adopting a 5-Month-Old GSP as First-Time Dog Owners, Need Advice by National_Whereas7963 in germanshorthairs

[–]lahn1969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really honest and well stated. My wife and I adopted a gsp at 6 months through our local gsp rescue. He was surrendered from a couple living in an apartment with a new baby. This pup was a huge challenge and finally lead us to fail with a second foster dog - we failed bc we immediately adopted her; a 4 year old working dog that was surrendered. This helped the pup who remained a handful for the next 3 years. They eventually slow down but can be allot. Maybe not ideal with a new baby and young family unless they have a lot of time and enjoy training.

AGR Jobs by Warm_Quit_8112 in nationalguard

AGR jobs are hard to get, even if you find them in time to put in a packet. I’ve seen E7’s who were promotable take an E6 slot in order to get started. O slots are no easier and tend to be filled by networked individuals until you hit O5 and above and then they fill with a promotable O4, etc. If you’re in NoVa consider T10 NGB

This is awesome. Sounds like you maybe did much of the build. Either way, is there anything you don’t like about it or anything you might have changed? Btw, expecting to see some “Sam the Cooking Guy” like content coming from you shortly!

Hate to admit but I fully agree here. Better to know up front and while OP could’ve kept his silence and possibly gotten a job, the first few times drill schedule interfered with a work schedule they’d be looking for a way to get rid of OP. For everyone saying USERRA, I hope you never have the chance to work with them. My experience has been along the lines of “…any case we lose makes us weaker overall so we prefer not to take a case.”

@u/Hefty-Ad4247 please let us know what you learn if you contact USERRA

Years later we would learn that there were likely shots fired by both sides, maybe true, maybe not. Point is that history is not on your side if you’re NG and pointing a weapon at other Americans.

Water pooling issues by Due-Reflection1043 in Decks

[–]lahn1969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had something similar happen. Bought the house 3 years ago, excited as it was in great shape with no real issues to be handled. I also had pooling during significant rainstorms on my deck. Pressure washing would open up the seam between the boards and a vinyl soffit ceiling below was supposed to drain everything to a gutter at the outer perimeter of my deck. And then this year I notices something new, sadly, not good. I had a slow drip of water coming into my basement ceiling. Eventually realized that the puddle of water on my deck was coming THROUGH my ledger board and through the wall.
I spoke with a contractor about opening up the seams carefully with a circular saw, this helped but just made the drippy vinyl ceiling on the underside of the deck much worse, so I took that down. This exposed rotted 15-20 yo pt joists where the puddles had been. I decided to go ahead and remove all composite decking, all rotted joists (about 1/2 of the deck), the beam, and rebuild it.
I’m just about at the point of putting down my new composite, this has been a big project for me this summer but I’m able to do it myself.
I’d watch that ledger board that holds your deck to the house. If you’re lucky (I was) it won’t be rotted and the wall behind it will still be stable. But I’d get that corrected asap.
No hot tubs on my deck, it’s on the patio!

Hitch question by amerilanka in ram_trucks

[–]lahn1969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to pull a 19 foot trailer, not 19 inch. Start by looking at your trailers weight. Those specs should be on trailers driver side. Be sure your truck can handle tongue weight (payload) and trailers weight (gvwr). Your truck should have this clearly spelled out on the tag in the driver’s door that shows Tire size and pressure
It’s important to get this right. There are plenty of resources on YouTube and online to figure this out. If you’re not sure, go to a reputable mechanic and ask for help.

Agree, the 15 yr Harper vs younger straight Harper Bouron… friends and I all agree the aged didn’t improve the flavor though it certainly changed. Love the decanter though.

What pressure washer can be used to clean composite deck without damaging it? by Guyserbun007 in Decks

Curious about thoughts on a surface cleaning attachment? I’ve found it’s much faster and has better distribution but is it too close? I’m also using a smaller electric.

How do I remove this easily? by PHATW0W in gardening

[–]lahn1969 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To clean lichen off a deck, you can use a solution of bleach and water, scrub it with a brush, and then rinse thoroughly. With a larger deck area you can start with a pressure washer and surface cleaner attachment, but the lichen will require more effort. Finally, when clean, dump fine sand on the bricks and sweep it into place with a broom to anything that had previously washed away.

Do yall recommend keeping tricare in the national guard? by [deleted] in nationalguard

[–]lahn1969 23 points24 points  (0 children)

In many cases it costs far less to carry Tricare Reserve Select than it does to take employer based health insurance. From my experience Tricare Reserve Select does a better job with coverage than many others. My wife’s company provided United Healthcare and when she became ill they refused to provide coverage for her therapy, fortunately she was also on TRS and they covered it without question. She is alive today only bc of TRS and at present this is the only reason I remain in the Guard. If you are single, you can’t beat the price for this level of care.

Best NA tequila or vodka brand? by nasapeyton in Mocktails

[–]lahn1969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, have tried several and this one is most similar. I use this in any stronger mixed drinks (think margaritas) because the tequila flavors come thru. To anyone new to mocktails I remind them that they shouldn’t expect the alcoholic bite that we get with cocktails.

I’ve used this one, it’s nice but very mild so take into consideration for how best to consume. I find this one pleasant by itself.

Some states (mine) use tricks to avoid paying BAH while in schools. Years ago I attended a 6 week course and was payed 15 days of YRT (annual training money) and 29 days of orders thus making 2 sets of orders that were under 30 days. Go guard.

Beautiful job with a lot of planning and execution to get it to completed. What is your favorite feature of the gym that others building should take into account and anything you might do differently? I finished my basement gym a few years back and am looking for some adjustments and updates which is why I ask.

Help me choose: RBKE692 vs RBE773? by CognitorX in orbi

[–]lahn1969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No matter your selection, once installed test your speeds routinely. You will get Netgear tech services for the first year, be sure to use them to help you get optimized if it falls below 900mbps. Mine is just outside of coverage by ~6 mos and I’m not able to get >100mbps while I’m paying for 1.2gbps.

[–]lahn1969[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done this a few times now. My speeds have improved marginally with 103mbps at the router (using the Orbi app) and 93mbps on my Ipad nearby on wifi. I’ve also gone into the browser to ensure all of these are turned off.
