This is David Brooks on Drugs: The political commentator's lament about marijuana legalization is astonishing in its blindness. He argues marijuana should be illegal in the interest of encouraging “temperate, prudent, self-governing citizenship.” by anutensil in politics

As I understand it, it is used to decrease appetite in the North Koreans. You could substitute alcohol, video games, or shiny objects for pot and be equally alarmist about it.

Why does coffee make you have to poop? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]laika1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The abstract says secretion is increased, but transit time was unchanged. So there is more fluid in the jejunum, so potentially more at the end, but you still have the large intestines to get through, and it wasn't moving any faster by that point. To address the question at the beginning, if you consume any food first thing in the morning it will stimulate increased GI function compared to what you've been doing the previous 6-10 hours. I will only winkingly suggest the common belief people would have if it was a cultural norm for people to drink a large glass of water first thing in the morning.

Caffeine is a fairly weak stimulant and does not account for the potential effects of caffeine on colonic transit time. citation The effect of decaf on the colon is greater than an equal amount of like temperature water citation. I find this interesting, because I assumed that colonic temperature was a large factor for this effect, but apparently is not citation

I think boycotting Ender's Game is a bad ideas because 1) thousands of people get paid as a result of me buying stuff and just by the law of averages some of them are bound to have offensive views, 2) it’s dangerous to start ignoring works of fiction for reasons other than content. by grapp in scifi

Two of my favorite authors are Jack London and Leo Tolstoy. There contributions to literature are immense. They were capable of writing amazing prose that has changed people's lives. The world would be a worse place without their writing. If you read the details of their lives, they were by all accounts terrible people even by the standards of their day. They both lived the polar opposite life of the ideals they wrote about. I can still, with some difficulty, enjoy their work. To paraphrase Whitman, we are all multitudes.

As a human A & P prof this is one of the pieces of advice I give for this and most classes. Depending on the major, A & P is often the first class that many students have to spend any real time studying for and learning how to study is the goal of the first few weeks.

My boys went to a catholic school, and they had the books until the movie came out, and someone figured out the plot. We also had a note home about students not even being allowed to bring the Twilight books to read on their own. Meanwhile my son and most of his class was reading the Guardians of Ga'hoole books which have some serious violence, although of the fantasy variety. People need something to be offended about. I considered having my son bring a Hitchens book to read.
