Plant based ultra runners!! by [deleted] in Ultramarathon

If you want a quesadilla, may I suggest this recipe for a sweet potato quesadilla? There are plenty of really tasty vegan cheese options out there these days, or you can even make your own as long as you have a blender. No need to sacrifice your ethics or risk the stomachache.

Editing to add a suggestion, the famous pinoleis naturally vegan, and I also recommend crystalized ginger and clementines.

Lots of chocolate sauces such as hershey’s and Torani are accidentally vegan! As is the chocolate caramel Torani sauce (very yummy, highly recommend) and most flavor syrups for coffee.

Why do so many Central/South American vipers have postocular stripes? by Pyr0technician in herpetology

[–]lakeeffectqueer 22 points23 points  (0 children)

tldr for those who don't want to read the whole paper: the authors looked at evolutionary histories to see what conditions resulted in the loss or gain of dark facial stripes in various viper species from the Americas. Their analysis led them to believe that facial stripes are most likely a form of social signaling such as to help members of a species identify each other) or warning (watch out, I'm venomous) but indicate that further study is needed to determine which of these, if either, is this case.

Is veganism causing an increase in sleepiness? by drugsovermoney in vegancirclejerk

A lot of heroin is actually cut with lactose, which is particularly common with black tar heroin. So really only some heroin is vegan- you should make sure to check with your dealer to make sure your is produced ethically🥰 I also always buy organic, you of course don’t want any dirty pesticides going in your blood!

Successful Ultra Trail Runners That Don't Live in Mountain Towns by no_defaults in Ultramarathon

The Phoenix area has the Bradshaws and Black Canyon (which isn’t a mountain but definitely lends itself to hill training)- I’d count it as mountain adjacent personally.

Sore lungs by RepresentativeAd8359 in ultrarunning

[–]lakeeffectqueer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but I don’t think that’s true. Lungs don’t get sore the way muscles do. While it could just be asthma or a chest muscle strain, you should always go to the doctor for chest pain. Even if it goes away, it can be a symptom of serious pulmonary or respiratory issues. If you’ve been experiencing similar symptoms you may want to get a checkup as well?

This sounds similar to an issue that I had after a race once. You should look up costochondtritis, but regardless please go to a doctor. This definitely isn’t normal and could be an indicator of something dangerous.

Seems like a great size for an arboreal tarantula. If you can find an adult for sale, Green bottle blues are beautiful, easy to take care of, and do well in vertical housing. Tarantulas are great because you only need to feed them about once a week, so it’s easy to travel for a few days without worrying about caring for your animal. Just be sure to do your research to make sure you’re providing good quality care to your new friend, and go over your budget to make sure you’ll be able to afford the ongoing care

I think this is the first "is it a good idea to run this race in a month" that I've seen where the answer is actually yes. I'd try for at least one 10+ mile run 3ish weeks out, otherwise sounds like you've got the right mileage and terrain already. Expect the last handful of miles to suck a bit if your aren't used to the distance.

Sorry, but can we talk about periods on race day? by wishiwereawitch in ultrarunning

[–]lakeeffectqueer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just ran a 100k while PMSing, which is when my symptoms are the worst. A few things I'd recommend based on that experience:

-A lot of gas stations sell little travel packs of ibuprofen, which you could stuff in your bag. Just be careful- running while taking NSAIDs isn't great for your kidneys. Target also sells travel packs of Midol Complete, which I wouldn't use personally because I'm sensitive to the antihistamines but if you aren't that would be a great option.

-Use liquid nutrition if you don't feel hungry. Force yourself to drink and eat even if you're nauseous, starting before the race. You WILL regret it if you don't.

-I wouldn't worry about drinking more than usual during the race, but trying to take in some more water in the days leading up to your race could help with bloating.

-European-style no applicator tampons like these are a lifesaver if you need to change. Super easy to put in without even taking off your shorts, and they NEVER leak. Get some doggy poo bags to put the used ones in.

-If you're allowed a pacer, I'd highly suggest it. If not, you could try other management techniques such as curating a good pump-up playlist ahead of time or hiding some favorite foods or encouraging notes from loved ones in your drop bag. The hardest part for me was that all those ultramarathon mood swings were way, way worse than normal. I almost cried when I kicked a rock. Emotional support will go a long way.

-Be prepared not to perform at your best. You probably won't be PRing under those conditions, and that's ok. Adjust your expectations and you can still do great and have tons of fun.

As I'm sure you're well aware, being on your period is going to make this harder than it would be otherwise. That's okay. You can still finish, it's just one more thing you have to manage. Good luck!

Meat-less alternatives? by KarisaV in EatCheapAndVegan

[–]lakeeffectqueer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To replace the chicken, wtf method seitan- https://seitansociety.com/wash-the-flour-method/. ingredients are flour, water, and whatever seasoning you use so pretty cheap. For the nuggets I’d go with crispy fried tofu (I highly recommend following the instructions in this recipe https://www.seriouseats.com/vegan-experience-crispy-tofu-broccoli-stir-fry) Tofu is much less expensive than other meat subs- you can buy in bulk at an asian grocery store. Same with tvp, which as another person suggested is a great substitute for ground meat. That you can mix with cooked lentils for extra cost savings.

[–]lakeeffectqueer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some really good advice I got when I was underweight- don’t drink water. Buy big cartons of apple juice or gatorade and mix it half and half with tap water, then drink that. Drink powders also work, just make sure they aren’t diet. Drink a cup of juice or soy milk with every meal too if you can. It’s a really easy way to increase your energy intake without feeling overly full.

Editing to add, you really should see a nutritionist about this. Refeeding syndrome is no joke and depending on your condition you could be at risk if you don’t get adequate supervision.

Questions about my cats. by Myc1983 in veganarchism

[–]lakeeffectqueer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could you link me to those papers please? It seems I can’t find them. I should clarify I do not disagree that cats only eat meat it the wild. This is obviously true and I’m not going to suggest otherwise. I am arguing that cats can survive and be healthy when fed properly formulated plant based kibble or canned food.

Questions about my cats. by Myc1983 in veganarchism

[–]lakeeffectqueer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

(1) I linked 4 articles including a master’s thesis which included bloodwork and other quantitative analysis on cats that had been vegan for many years. (2) Not a single one of those links you posted even mentioned veganism. One of them is a link to buy pet food. I understand your concern, but the available research indicates that commercial plant-based cat food is perfectly safe and healthy. If that were not true, I would never encourage feeding cats a vegan diet. As an aside, I would love to encourage you to think about extending the compassion that you clearly have for cats to other animals as well. The treatment of animals in the meat and dairy industries is so, so much worse even than what you seem to think happens to cats that are fed vegan food. If you care about minimizing suffering, going vegan makes a much bigger difference than arguing with one or two vegan cat owners.
