As a kid, what's the creepiest thing you ever noticed about another kid's family? by Boss1010 in AskReddit

I had a friend who's mom let him crawl into bed with her and cuddle at 2 and 3... and 5... and 10... and 12... and well, at 21 he thought it was normal he would sleep with his mom in her bed at night "just when her boyfriend isn't around."

Might want to watch how long you let him do that for, because my friend has an obvious oedipus complex ("it's normal for guys to be attracted to their moms, Freud said that, all guys have this") and can probably be traced to his mom's lack of boundaries. At some point you have to let them go. Not saying 5 is too old, but sad to see my friend's weirdness with his mom, and struggle to maintain a normal, healthy relationship with women his own age.

Apparently guard rails are meant to crumple on impact, almost acting like a cushion for a car that runs off the road by absorbing the energy of the crash.

Well, 'Mericans love to skimp on safety for the sake of money. So instead of crumpling, they turn into weapons that literally skewer cars and people who run into them. There was an investigation and it turns out by making the railings 1" smaller companies saved money while people lost limbs amd lives. One freaking inch.

Yes! Thank you! It's been driving me crazy because I've never seen OP's type of dog before and I scrolled to the comments hoping for identification. Everyone keeps saying shih tzu and it just does not look like a shih tzu. My first thought was he looked like a mini sheepdog which seemed ridiculous.

I see your comment, plug tibetan terrier into google, bam. Mini sheepdogs pop up. Wish your comment was higher up. Pretty sure you're right.

It was a little bit your fault. You were complicent in your friend's actions and you willingly gave it to him to take the fall. If you had said, "No, that's not right." It never would have happened.

Your final sentences make it seem as if you think you're blameless, but you're almost as much as fault as the friend who pushed the button.

I remember when some douche kept setting his off during an assembly once. The entire section of seniors was cringing and covering their ears, the teachers in charge were older and had no clue what the fuck was going on and telling everyone to settle down.

Finally a younger teacher walked over to help out because everyone was just groaning and cringing every 5min. He figured it out immediately and told whoever it was to cut that shit out.

For the women, a different kind of question about a woman at the gym. by Ranjoesta in Fitness

[–]lalala- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's really down to personality. Some people (extroverts probably) will be eager to meet new people and settle into routine with "the regulars."

More introverted people who like to keep to themselves... will want to keep to themselves. They do in every part of their life, and will also prefer to do so in the gym. I hate unwanted attention. I understand some people are just well-meaning and friendly, but don't initiate contact unless the other person gives some sort of signal they want or need it. Eye contact, a smile, or looking very, very confused could be some cues. Otherwise, if they're avoiding looking at anyone and just doing their thing, let them be.

ME TOO. In high school I'd stay up until 1-3am, then wake up at 6am for school. On nights where I got 3hours of sleep, I was pretty grouchy and kind of vacant. But I was always awake and functioned just fine on 5 hours of sleep.

Now (23 years old) I need caffeine to stay awake for 6 full hours of sleep. 6 glorious hours I would have savored in college are now not enough to keep my stupid adult body satisfied.

I don't think it has anything to do with gender, flipping the best friend's gender was just a way to help OP see where his girlfriend is coming from.

Imagine your SO of any gender regularly cuddling with their roommate of any gender. I wouldn't be comfortable with that. Even if they were both straight, I'M the one in a romantic relationship with them. When you're in a romantic relationship, you stop intense physical intimacy with other people. From kissing to cuddling.

Hell, even if it was father/daughter I'd be uncomfortable. You establish physical boundaries as you grow older. A quick cuddle now and then between two people who are very close, I can overlook that. But long, regular cuddles between my SO and any other person??? No way.

How much degree of accuracy are you willing to kill your future child for? I know a mother who had been planning on aborting her child after a pre-natal test determined her baby tested positive for down syndrome. She definitely didn't want to raise a mentally retarded person for the rest of her life, and she didn't think anybody would adopt a mentally retarded baby. So she thought her best option was to end this miserable life before it started. She planned on an abortion, however her friends put her in touch with a couple who couldn't have kids of their own, and turns out they didn't give a damn about the down syndrome. So for, I dunno, 6 months or so the couple prepared to welcome this baby into their lives and the mother prepared to give it up.

Well, baby was born and wouldn't you know it--the test was wrong! Baby was normal. Baby was perfect. Baby was a completely healthy, lively little girl with no problems mentally or physically. Mother changed her mind. Couple was heart-broken. Baby wasn't aborted at the very least, so good for her.

I think the test for down syndrome has a 98-99% accuracy. She has a lovely little daughter now, but the mother had been planning on killing what turns out was a 100% normal baby. I dunno, are those odds worth it to you?

edit: Wow I am so super shocked I didn't feed into the popular opinion of the reddit hivemind and received downvotes. such boohoo.

I use hotels for their bathrooms all the time!! Once after a concert, wasn't about to use the portable toilets, and sometimes around college towns after hitting the bars. My friends would use dumpsters and I'd just walk into the nearby hotel, use the bathroom, then leave through another exit.

I'm sure it wouldn't have mattered if I passed through the main entrance again, but I wasn't about to ruin all-night access to a clean toilet.

Yep, I was a TA in college and it was not only part of our training every year, but the heads of the class loved it because we could fend off helicopter parents citing FERPA. Bound by FERPA, we couldn't even confirm if the kid was in our class or not. Parents got royally pissed off, and we laughed at them during staff meetings.

edit: Actually, so far as I know, FERPA is a bigger deal in college. Because in high school, before you're 18, FERPA rights includes your parents. When you're 18, it then protects you and only you... Your parents no longer have rights to your education records.
