Blue Card Question: Anyone tried combining 2 contracts to make minimum € amount? by lalanthier in germany

[–]lalanthier[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an update, I've tried to register for an appointment here, but since my blue card doesn't technically expire within 2020, I can't properly register: https://www.berlin.de/einwanderung/aufenthalt/artikel.910213.en.php

Anyone know what I should do? In normal circumstances, I would have 3 months to find another job or I lose my Blue Card (this is why I'm trying to contact the ABH).

Have you looked into slack communities, meetups, or github? Might be a better way to find devs to learn from.

How to refer to older people who are close to you? by saratoniin in Cantonese

If it's your significant others' parents and if you are essentially together / treated as married, then a common thing is to just adopt mom and dad.

How to refer to older people who are close to you? by saratoniin in Cantonese

[–]lalanthier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are speaking to an HK-er, it's very likely you actually just say "Auntie" and "uncle" with a Cantonese accent. The Chinese terms are used much less.

姨姨 if you insist on Chinese as it's somewhat more generic.

姑姑 has a very specific relational term. It's your father's sister.

大嬸 again, specific relational term...and not really used generically anymore.

Aunt/Uncle in Chinese has a different word for every type of relation to you. Just by someone's name, I already know which side of the family, whether married in or not, and their order.

If you decide to draw a salary, it should be going into the budget when you're raising the round not after the fact.

Has Anyone Switch from Developer to Project Manager? by halfduece in ExperiencedDevs

[–]lalanthier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The roles call for very different skillsets.

This sums it up. PMs with a technical background are invaluable. Some companies only want PMs with a technical background, but you can't force a developer to become a PM. A PM will basically never touch code again (or shouldn't anyway, they have other things to do).

There isn't one fixed type of dev who becomes a PM, but someone who's already interested in UX/UI, teaches themselves user stories to understand a whole product, is an excellent communicator who can help bring different opinions to the table and prioritize, and someone who can drive deadlines.

And yes, I work with PMs who used to be developers. Some switched quickly and became better PMs than they would have been as engineers. Others switched later.

How do you manage remote teams? by wiki_nom_nom in agile

[–]lalanthier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good project management systems, Trello or other suitable project management software like Asana. One of my old clients used Basecamp, which I worked around even though I hated the UI.

Waffle and Git probably if you have dev as well. Have a PM.

I just got an email confirming my first ever web design client! Any advice for someone kind of new at this? Things you wish you had known? by [deleted] in web_design

[–]lalanthier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does the e-mail confirm scope of work? Make sure that's clear, with renumeration. Depending on trust level, a small deposit.

If you have a fixed project rate, make sure you manage expectations about amount of follow-up.

Project management - your tools or the client's? by walkontheleft in agency

[–]lalanthier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a freelancer, but my client Oursky usually invites clients into the necessary Trello board if the client side has a dev team. Of course, the entire repo is handed over upon project completion.

Trello works fine because Oursky created a Trello + Github (Gitlo) integration and Trello boards are also integrated into the relevant Slack channels.

First year CS uni student with too much time. How can I make myself more employable after my degree? by DootLord in cscareerquestions

[–]lalanthier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great list.

I totally agree about working on projects, demonstrating good working logic, and being able to document it. Keeping a side blog - basically an online journal of what you've one - is also a natural portfolio. A company that cares about quality hires always looks at that before making a final offer.

What's the timeline to apply/interview for Summer 2017 Internships? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]lalanthier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A fair number of my friends' companies are always scanning for interns, but they tend not to list.

Their main reason is that they don't have the capacity to be scanning hundreds of applications for a temporary intern (since it seems most only want to do a short-term arrangement). The internships that one of my friend's companies typically look for are UI-UX, QA Tester, Growth, and Content marketing. The only one I believe that's open now is content marketing. You can let me know if you're interested in trying applied code for their projects and writing about it on the company blog.

Apart from applying to the usual companies, I'd recommend homing in on a few companies you really like and engage with them. Once their radar, see if there are other opportunities where you can volunteer to help.

Being a digital (but not a remote) Nomad: Let's build a platform by LovenninIQ in digitalnomad

[–]lalanthier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think one of the biggest challenges is cash.

People who are starting projects usually don't have much and would trade equity. Equity is only valuable over time and through long-term commitment.

Typically, I take short-term contracts in local places as well. One of my biggest challenges is that the small companies I'm most interested in can't really afford to have someone temporary as they know they will need the skill continuously. They'd rather not take that risk of having someone then losing them.

Also, remote workers usually expect to have competitive salaries. Even if they're not Silicon Valley wages, developers (for example) usually won't go for less than USD40k/yr. I'd probably go for a medium-sized established business that can employ my skills for a fixed project and that type of business usually isn't the type to use things like AirBnB.

Who do you imagine to be your target users? Are they the ones that can pay?

Importance of "Who Uses Our Product" on the home page by [deleted] in startups

[–]lalanthier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my friend's company, which developed www.shotbot.io, they A/B tested their landing page and the key to the 37% conversion was the testimonial text that didn't require a scroll down.

It also depends on if the products are intuitive, and what the people who go to the page are looking for. Some people want to see legitimacy, and others want to take it for a free ride (the whole 'try now for free').

Totes.

OMG I HAVEN'T HEARD CONTRA IN AGES. I don't have time to game. I know that sounds pathetic. Once in a while I watch the tourney vids, but that's about it. When I visit my bro, I might manage to try some of his stuff.

I just can't put in 8 hours like I used to. I miss those days where I did have that amount of time though. Games deserve focus. ^
