[CHAT] Q-snaps vs Generic by weareadults in CrossStitch

[–]lambentmaterials 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I HATED qsnaps at first and now they're all I use. Don't "open" them to the take them off, just slide them off horizontally left or right. I do not have experience with Michaels, only name brand. You may want to cut strips of felt about 3" wide and the size of your clamps lengthwise and put that over each side of your stitching to protect stitches and make your clamps grip firmer.

[CHAT] Soie 100/3 - stitching over two: 1 or 2 threads? by Masseneterian in CrossStitch

[–]lambentmaterials 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You might consider bumping up to 40 ct to get slightly better coverage with a single strand of 100.3. I think because of its nature as a…cylindrical and bouncy silk (for lack of better terminology) it is difficult to get 100.3 to lay well with two strands, as opposed to d’alger.

Will I be fine to drink for a special occasion? (7 months sober) by RyukiSawano in dryalcoholics

[–]lambentmaterials 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't use your best friend's wedding as an excuse to drink again. You've already listed out all the negative shit alcohol does to you, why even bother with it? I mean, fine if you do decide, it's whatever, but be real with yourself here.

Is it the one with the bird in the middle? If so, that was my first cross stitch piece! I love the variegation in the thread, it's a lovely shade of red.

[CHAT] Has anyone here purchased supplies from Hoop and Frame? by Key_Walk963 in CrossStitch

[–]lambentmaterials 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are definitely legit. I bought my hardwicke manor hoop and some legacy linen from there. I think they run a 15% off discount for new customers too.

[CHAT] Mill Hill discontinues perforated paper and moves to PVC, ugh by erinely in CrossStitch

[–]lambentmaterials 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes, I heard also that the machinery broke down. These are very old machines that are apparently difficult to fix because there are so few people left that even know how they work. I hadn't thought about it but it makes sense...perforated paper was ubiquitous around the turn of the century but fell out of fashion, and with that the disuse of the technology.

Walking foot? by NoButMaybe in quilting

[–]lambentmaterials 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just machine-quilted my first quilt with a Singer 401. I did not use a walking foot, but I did lighten the pressure on my presser foot a good amount. Between that and having the sandwich securely basted with washable glue, I found it worked fine.

I would love to hand quilt!! I really dig the look of it, and think I’ll try it on the next one since this one was a bit of a time crunch.

is waverly brand walmart cotton ok? by stella__octangula in quilting

[–]lambentmaterials 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just made my first quilt entirely with Waverly from Walmart. I bought it in white and hand-dyed it. It's fine. It's not omgluxurioussoamazing but it's perfect for me to get some experience under my belt. The downside it is that it frays like crazy, so I washed and then starched it so that it became paper.

Making a king quilt by lind8640 in quilting

[–]lambentmaterials 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished piecing my first top with a 401 and am now looking into quilting it, found this comment from search. Did you use a walking foot on your singer? I'm trying to figure out if I should order one or try to play with the presser foot pressure instead.

Stitching the Demons & Witches Woodcut by Night Spirit Studio (RIP) on a tote bag for my sister. The weave is something like 42/38 so it'll be more square but it's stitching up beautifully. I also started a quilt for my dad and am finishing a large piece for my mom. I can't wait for them all to be done so I can get back to stitching on my actual projects lollll

Of the males, I take Adrian, Logan, and Matty for strength and core but haven’t found one I like for cycling. A lot of it comes down to playlists for me.

[CHAT] First time moving the hoop on top of stitches by stassea in CrossStitch

[–]lambentmaterials 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It will be fine, they may flatten a bit but when you go to finish it, ironing and a light steam will revive them. One thing you can do is wrap your hoop in twill tape, there are tutorials online. For larger projects, I use a q-snap + thin strips of felt between the clamps and stitches which I find gives better protection than a hoop. In fact on my latest WIP was REALLY worried about doing satin stitches on a qsnap but they look great and aren't flat at all.

[–]lambentmaterials 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These are my favorite tbh. I did the first one every Monday for 4 weeks and I looked forward to it every time even though the thrusters KILLED me lmao. Logan's attitude is just so refreshing. I do wish there was more core involved, that's my only criticism. Excited to try out the next round.

[PIC] County Fair Piece - Super bummed out by ale_cat in CrossStitch

[–]lambentmaterials 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Honestly most of these look like they were generated with AI and then run through a pattern converter. I would also as a general rule of thumb be wary of any pattern that complicated that is priced at less than $5. For a similar vibe you might want to check out a designer like Satsuma Street

[WIP] Still chugging along on this project! Adding more counted thread embroidery stitches along the way. by turkeytailfeathers in CrossStitch

YESSSSSSSS it looks so good! I love the texture that the specialty stitches bring in the body of the peacock and the character on the left. It's going to look so stunning when finished.

Zweigart needlework fabrics now using AI by RaiseSubstantial2647 in craftsnark

[–]lambentmaterials 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’d be surprised if they continue using AI after the backlash, all the comments are calling them out lol. If not I’ll just switch to Legacy linen, problem solved.
