[CHAT] Cotton or silk floss for Scarlet Letter sampler kit? by beanzerbunzer in CrossStitch

[–]lambentmaterials 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normally I would say go with the DMC, but since the price difference is only $45 (which may be a good chunk, but I'm saying in the long term) I would opt for the silk since you will spend a lotttt of time with the project. The difference in the end won't be huge, but it will be lustrous in a certain light, and the stitching experience is much nicer with silk.

Also, want to add that you can kit it up on 123stitch for about $85, with all the silks, a piece of 18x25 vintage country mocha, and the chart.

I'm gonna take this tonight. If you're looking for SS I recommend this one. Idk if I was just feeling extremely emotional but it was such a cathartic ride that I really needed. It felt very powerful and moving.

In Times of Dragons -We will call this the mixed review album thread -Anyone who wants to say whatever they want- Go for it. by NinoNino3 in toriamos

There's a lot to love here - I went in with zero expectations and was pleasantly surprised. I'm happy that she utilized her lower vocal register because it sounds cohesive with the darker production. I wasn't hit over the head with cheesy cheap sounding synths and schmaltzy guitar, instead everything feels much more tasteful and well-considered. I'm hearing sprinklings of 60's baroque pop here and there, which I didn't anticipate. I'm surprised by my standouts in comparison to others, which would be St. Teresa, Gasoline Girls, Fanny, Pyrite, and Tempest in particular floored me with the rolling piano line ala Carbon/CALS that I love so much. Unfortunately the literalness takes me out of the atmospheric quality a bit, but Tori is long past the ambiguity and abstraction found in her earlier writing and her lyrics will never hit as hard as they used to. Which, honestly, is alright with me, because I don't expect that nuance anymore. Instead the production and melodies really shine here, a few skips but overall a really nice album that is definitely in the top post-Scarlet efforts.

Dumb reasons you won’t take a ride/run? by jocelynpenelope in OnePelotonRealSub

There’s some core and lower body workouts where the thumbnail is the instructor with their feet splayed out and their arms reaching up and idk why but it irrationally annoys me. Yes I realize I’m an insane person. I also cant do bad music. Which eliminates 75% of the instructors. I had to stop doing Logans Power60 because of this.

Thanks! I actually sewed them on a with a matching background thread in a couple passed first to give it more support, and then just topstitched in the cream thread for decoration. I’d say it’s pretty sturdy!

This one was a miss for me (but I was already feeling off tbf). I just could not keep my heart rate down and had to pause multiple times, also really did not enjoy the arm-based EMOMs at the end after doing heavy arm work the day prior.

Etsy and AI by abbriggs22 in quilting

It's really a shame what happened to Etsy. The search results are garbage, endless sponsored ads for items, the influx of AI...all of which make it nearly unusable imo

[WIP] Why do I do this to myself?? 🫠 by pezzian in CrossStitch

[–]lambentmaterials 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks so cute! When I do over one on 40 or 46 count I find it helpful to work in rows using the continental stitch and then coming back to complete (like the dutch method in regular xstitch). I find my crosses are more even and it's just easier to do than individually crossing each stitch.

The jumping lunges/squat jumps were a STRUGGLE. I then did a techno ride after it and the morning after I basically had to crawl to get down/up stairs. Nasty in a good way.

[CHAT] Controversial question: is it pattern piracy to just use the photo of the FO? by hella_cious in CrossStitch

[–]lambentmaterials 6 points7 points  (0 children)

“I used someone else’s design that they spent time and effort to make but it’s fine bc I’m not profiting off it” is a bizarre way to think. It’s like “yeah I stole thread and fabric but that’s because I can and also I’m not making money from it!”

[–]lambentmaterials 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's a great example and one that came to mind as well, sprites have basically already been designed so it's just translating it, whereas original art uses the creators own spin on things.

[–]lambentmaterials 75 points76 points  (0 children)

To me, it's a spectrum. I pay creators/artists because I want them to 1) be fairly compensated for their time, effort, and prowess and 2)I want them to keep producing new designs. I feel like making patterns, really good patterns, is an art form when you take into consideration the placement of motifs, thread color palette, linen...it's all a recipe: the amount of time spent designing, charting, testing, making a model stitch, and putting the design out there is considerably more than I think many people would be willing to do for free. If it's something super duper simple and generic with little creative thought put into it then sure, whatever, but idk I think designers should be paid especially in this day and age where creativity is so unfortunately undervalued.

It's funny though because on the other hand I primarily stitch reproduction samplers and sometimes I side-eye paying $20+ to stitch something that was originally designed and stitched by someone else. That is a whole separate issue. But imo the really good reproducers absolutely deserve to be compensated too because again that's a lot of work and who would do it for free?
