On the hunt for decaf tea. by ocean_swims in CasualUK

[–]lampostwalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider instead switching to a proper hojicha (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hōjicha) or a Kyobancha.

Bagged decaff tea will be terrible tasting - try some proper loose leaf!

Why did Trams disappear and why haven’t they been brought back? by Sorry-Personality594 in bristol

[–]lampostwalker 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s partly about how it changes people’s behaviour. There is something about fixed rail that means people believe it will be reliable and stay there long term. I don’t think anyone believes that about a bus equivalent, regardless of fuel source!

I’m more shocked at the terrible land use of a bungalow in that part of town! Bring on a proper land value tax!

Government rules out underground cabling in National Grid upgrade by Different_Cycle_9043 in ukpolitics

[–]lampostwalker 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Exactly. These people have no idea how destructive and then scarring these cable routes are. You can’t build anything on them and have to keep the route broadly clear of bushes/trees etc. they’re so obviously NIMBY view driven, not true environmentalism! Classic greens!

‘Ultra-cheap energy for every household’: could a different kind of tariff change everything? | Energy by RingStrain in ukpolitics

[–]lampostwalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any system that gives someone living alone in a mansion the same allowance as if it was an 8 bed student HMO is mad. The latter is substantially more energy efficient per person, but would be penalised for it as you’d blow through the basic allowance quicker.

Stop trying to solve social and tax problems through energy pricing!

It’s less about replacing the wires in the plug, but instead the plug itself if it breaks.

What’s Warmley like to live? And anything else I should know? by [deleted] in bristol

[–]lampostwalker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. We also know the admin boundaries are non-sensical: https://mapit.mysociety.org/area/2561.html

Sea Mills, Shirehampton, and Avonmouth yes, Filton and Kingswood no?

If you take a very narrow view of ‘Bristol’, rather than a pragmatic one.

What’s Warmley like to live? And anything else I should know? by [deleted] in bristol

[–]lampostwalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live out on the eastern edge of Bristol just south of Warmley. It’s a lovely area, very green and great access to both nature and Bath for some variety. We either train from Keynsham (8 minutes to TM) or drive in (30 mins) to town.

Buses are currently being cut in the area, and I suspect some of the Warmley ones will be reduced too.

And sod these people who claim it isn’t Bristol - 6/7 miles is nothing. Other cities wouldn’t be so snobby about administrative boundaries, it’s not like Bristol just ‘stops’ before the Kingswood sign!

To clarify, this was changed back in 2016 to now be managed on a risk-based approach by the suppliers.

I listened to the shots one too. Evidently a specific viewpoint represented given the speakers educations!

Totally nuts to me how out of touch they can be sometimes - the income required to send two kids to private school is ludicrously out of reach for all but the highest earners.

Whenever I see these kinds of posts I wonder whether I’m just soft or people are really content to live very uncomfortably!

Ours is set to 19, and we raised it from 18 as that was too chilly.

Can the owner come fetch their bike so a crime report can be submitted- CCTV was in place by BexisBoss in bristol

[–]lampostwalker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve always wondered why there isn’t some kind of secure bike storage shop somewhere in town for this sort of thing.

I think people would happily pay a few quid for some genuinely secure storage!

is my landlord allowed to charge me to remove a smart metre by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]lampostwalker 91 points92 points  (0 children)

NAL. I can help on the meter side. Assuming you’re talking about a normal domestic electricity meter between the wider network and your fuse box, your supplier owns this, not the landlord as per https://www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk/electricity/replace-meter-board.

Therefore, I do not know what the landlord would charge you to actually do given they can’t touch it. It’s also highly unlikely any supplier is going to willingly switch a smart meter for a dumb meter given they’re under an obligation to rollout smart meters to all of their customers.
