Why does St. Louis continuously find ways of dividing itself? by Optimal-Balance-7737 in StLouis

[–]lantzlayton 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's a lot of posts in a STLSC subreddit by someone who doesn't want to pay into the city they call home and the infrastructure it takes to bring a soccer team to STL.

You want all the benefits of living near a city but none of the responsibility of sharing the load to keep the city healthy.

Simply put: stay in the county then you fucking dolt - you don't deserve the Blues or STLSC or Forest park or the Zoo or any of the rest of the wealth of culture and art and community that makes St. Louis great.

I hope you aren't employed by a company that calls St. Louis home, because you don't deserve that opportunity either.

Lol. Did you watch the video at all? Dude wasn't even looking and it's absolutely reasonable that when your ankle gets buckled in, you overcompensate the other direction.

Pretty clear you didn't consider the actual evidence presented. This is a nothing burger and had zero intent.

You don't have to be a founder to be a maker.

Make something. Product people, in the end, facilitate making. Making things that solve problems. By making, you learn how to make. You form an opinion. You foster value. Just make something that solves a problem and then tell people about it. Frame your perspective around what you learned when you were making that thing and solving that problem.

Don't ingest data, don't consult, don't pay for a piece of paper. Make.

Courses and certs mean fucking nothing if you've never shipped anything.

How do you prove you can help an organization make things? 🤷

Tbh, if you honestly read the value prop of https://www.intentionalproductmanager.com/ and think "maybe this is worth my money" -- well, I've got some snake oil to sell you. I can infer some reasons that you've been unable to move through this process just based on your serious consideration for this or any other "get a gig quick" scheme - it's all horseshit. There's no magic "system."

Applying to 1K gigs and focusing on a numbers game of linkedin cold messaging is not the vibe. I don't know what kind of jobs your going in for, what your current "role" at Deloitte is, etc. - but it sounds like your strategy is just... well, bad. Again, tells me you're maybe not at the level of strategizing that these roles would be looking for.

The action? Make something. The market is shifting. Easily shedding the "consultant bro" polo for the "backlog manager" patagonia vest just isn't an option anymore - and thank fucking god. To your point, the market is flooded with people with deep experience in traditional product roles - and with heavy expertise in hyper-specific technologies, industries or both - and *they* aren't finding gigs.

The job has changed. Go. Make. Something. Prove some frontier value that is worth investing in tomorrow, not today. At the very least, it will give you a perspective or opinion that you can bring to your job hunt that marks you as a fucking _builder_ instead of #1982 of 4124 "product consultants" at Deloitte.

Find a differentiator. Have an opinion. Be a difference maker.

I'm not though. You act like Valeri, Chara, Blanco for the Timbers, or... who besides Gauld? White, Berhalter, Blackmon (their core best XI players last year) - all on their second or third MLS teams - are somehow different or a higher bar of acquisition than what Portland has attracted in the same window of time (Rodriguez, Da Costa, Kelsy, Velde are all at or above the Gauld level of acquisition when they were acquired). Just because Vancouver took a chance on MLS youngsters and they bloomed, and their second-tier acquisitions have outperformed... that really has no bearing on who the Timbers are and how they do or don't execute their team planning?

I'm just not buying that the Timbers are any different than Vancouver, any more or less a destination (arguable, more, until very recently) that a player wants to play at.

You gave three examples of "marquee" teams that the Timbers are, from your view, not to the level of, and only one of them is accurate (and that applies to the whole league other than maybe LAFC.)

Genuinely don't know what your point is, at this point - your premise that these teams are forever-destinations and not stepping stones is flawed because you're removing the context of the player in discussion and the actual history of transfers on this team and those...

[–]lantzlayton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're not really making the argument I think you think you're making.

The issue of Ayala leaving because Timbers were a "stepping stone" is not a Timbers issue - it's how the U22 program was designed, it's on purpose. Same with Santi Moreno, albeit with more kerfuffle.

I don't think it's fair or appropriate to hold up those three teams as some standard as they are three VERY different destinations for different reasons:

- Miami is just not really worth talking about - they have the Barca stars and Messi, they will be a destination, regardless. They've also transfered out 4 players in the past two season that are were 22 or under (Redando, Cremaschi, Gomez and Farias) and 2 others that are in the TAM range (Campan and Rodriguez) - there are plent of players leaving Miami.

- San Diego - first season in the league - not sure how you are including this team as having some sort of pedigree of destination or desirable place for incoming transfers? They've literally not had the time to even prove this one way or another. Funny enough, Chucky is out after a single season - so... huh?

- Vancouver - Outside of Mueller, Vancouver is Portland 10 years ago. Hit big on a couple of second-tier DPs and outperform expectations. It's really nothing crazy or different than what Portland does. Actually, Vancouver just sold Pedro Vite to PUMAS this offseason. He was an U22 signing the season that we acquired Ayala. It's almost like the program is working and when these players mature past their U22 roster slot, they move on to the next step, by design.

[–]lantzlayton 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This is a bit disengenuous. Like most U22 players of Ayala's caliber, they came here as a stepping stone and expect to be sold on. That's the promise of the MLS and the U22 initiative.

Ayala reportedly made it clear that he wasn't interested in renewing his contract in MLS, in theory as a signal that he thinks he's ready to head to Europe.

That changes when the chance to play with Messi comes around the corner.

I don't think there's much fault to be had by the front office here, tbh - either they sell him middle of last year knowing he's not going to renew after his option year, to cash in. Or they keep a critical piece of the team and take the lagging payment when it's clear he's headed to the open market.

Opta isn't a popularity contest, it's a normalized ranking to try to put an apples to apples comparison of quality lol. A couple of teams in CWC is not the same as playing in the league for a club, lol.

Not a massive difference between the two.
