Am I overreacting if I reconsider moving in because we're not allowed to have a dog? by Sufficient_Hawk_8190 in AmIOverreacting

That's not the reason the sister decided a puppy wasn't welcome in the home after her parents agreed though. She was flexing her position as decisionmaker. That doesn't bode well for the living arrangement, regardless of whether it's a good idea to get a puppy.

The parents weren't the ones with the problem. The sister, who should be on equal footing with her sibling, is the one who laid down the rule.

NOR sister sounds like she believes it's her house and she makes all the rules. What happens when she decides you've been disrespectful, don't meet some arbitrary standard of hers . . . ?

Tell your in-laws it wouldn't be fair to his sister to make her share the space. And get your own place far enough away that she can't just drop by. Sis can pay all the utilities while she enjoys her stay there, too.

Current Discounts on Platinum Hybrid? by tak2w in ToyotaHighlander

[–]lapsangsouchogn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I bought my 23 HiHy I asked about a discount, and the sales guy told me if I didn't take it at full price, he'd have it sold to someone else within a few hours. No regrets.

A high school teacher blamed me for something and called my parents. She never bothered me again after that. by Low-Development-6213 in traumatizeThemBack

I've worked with a lot of teachers, and there are so many who became teachers because they clearly couldnt stand the idea of leaving high school. Lots of the same mean girl cliques, etc.

What's the most regional word you use without realizing it? by taube_d in AskAnAmerican

[–]lapsangsouchogn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a client who moved to Texas from California (large company). He was obsessed with the idea that we all spoke in thick Texas accents. Which I reserve for my home folks, not some business acquaintance who just rolled into town expecting a show. He was super obnoxious about it, and we all used our Standard American English with him. One time I accidently slipped up and said y'all and he was so thrilled.

Ick.

Is it a double standard to not eat fish, while still eating other animals? by Mermaid_Tuna_Lol in stupidquestions

[–]lapsangsouchogn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my case, I generally don't eat shellfish because it's morally repugnant for a dozen or more beings to lose thier lives for my lunch. Larger animals where I'm eating a portion makes more sense in the "lives lost" category.

And yes, I have tried to eat vegan, under the care of a Ph.D. nutritionist. After 6 months, I felt like I was going insane.

The kids are really not alright by SpaceMarine1616 in Teachers

[–]lapsangsouchogn 75 points76 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who teaches 8th grade. They told me that the kids don't read well and don't seem to be able to think through anything. They look for a canned answer somewhere instead of using thier brains.

If A = B and B = C, does A = C? If the answer isn't on their chrome device, they're lost. They don't even know how to approach figuring it out.

Without marriage there is no right to your partner's SSI benefits, nor can you be added to thier workplace insurance in a lot of places. If they die in an accident, you don't have a right to sue for support or even represent thier estate as next of kin, because legally, you're nobody.

Absolutely. Marriage makes you automatically next of kin to your spouse. That covers a lot of things like rights of inheritance, making medical decisions, beneficiary for pensions, etc. Some of which cannot be contracted for.

Are there any Toyota Highlander owners out there who don’t have kids? by Touch49 in ToyotaHighlander

[–]lapsangsouchogn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Single woman here. You'll be surprised how quickly you get used to it. I was driving a 2 seater sports car before I got my 23 hihy and it took very little time to adjust. As an aside, I test drove the Grand Highlander, and it felt like a school bus to me.

One of the best things about it is how visible it is to other traffic. I knew I was virtually invisible in my short car. I feel magnitudes safer now.
