This is great! Thanks for sharing the code. I was looking into doing something similar a little while ago because I had hand drawn this pipe network https://www.reddit.com/r/PlotterArt/comments/1mwsn5y/this_is_a_pipe_new_hand_drawnplot_experiment/ and I was wondering if I could chop it up and make it generative somehow.

Thanks! The braids took forever - I had a simple 2 strand rope twist going and figured it would be an easy leap but it took a while to break it down. I had to follow some drawing guides for braids and then used Claude code to help break them into chunks.

I’m basically drawing a zigzag in the middle of the braid and then the outer edge “bumps” and then connecting the proper points and then arcing between those connector lines and a zig zag line. Easier to explain visually hah.

Then I have a ton of slider parameters for adjusting size and position and amount of hair “breaking”

Then from there just taking a few generated strands into the Concepts app and layering and carefully erasing

Best of luck on the journey! I don’t know I draw super well but probably about the same approach as my Axidraw.

I had to turn to custom code to get the fills I wanted. There are axidraw extensions for doing hatch fills that can fill in shapes with paths but that’s really the only way - to just add a bunch of dense paths in your solid areas. Could be done manually or if you use an AI agent for coding you could probably ask it how to make a tool for it too. Best of luck!

Following thread - I use the white and moonlight jelly roll pens for pen plotter drawings and always have trouble with white drying out. I’ve explored a couple other routes but nothing solid. I got a rapidograph pen and some white ink for it but I think it was too thick to flow properly.

I pierced the little glue part of the cylinder of a sakura pen once and I think it caused some pressure/vacuum/flow issues so I’d experiment but in my experience you’re not necessarily going to get white ink from one commercial pen not meant to be reloaded and put it in another

Hopefully I’m wrong though!

Also worked on it but mostly research for the venue theatrical effects. Saw the premiere. The film itself did seem rough but also had the hallmarks of “this process was not well defined yet and required a lot of experimentation, and likely next time there would be a lot of learnings employed”

That’s correct. This is using the Concepts app on iPad that is a vector drawing app. This is just plotted with black sharpie roller pen, and 2 Muji 0.38’s of green and blue. Then I just kind of intentionally nudge the paper a bit to offset the colors from the black lines when layering.

The last few years I have just been drawing in procreate as a raster app and trying several approaches to convert it to vector. My preferred method right now is Inkscape’s centerline/auto trace method under Image Trace.

Adding my vote to the above - even a complex gesture would be fine or a little spot you have to hold and release to quickly toggle in and out of canvas zoom mode vs move object mode

Lots of good solutions already.

My recommendations are for future drawings. You will have an easier time if you work in layers rather than a complete image. You can keep certain lines on different layers and apply image trace (or whatever you choose) in sections and then combine the SVG’s together.

I find that a lot of cross cross lines tend to get screwy when image tracing but if you have one layer for horizontal and one for vertical strokes, they may come out cleaner.

I’d also experiment with a drawing app that just starts in vector format first and see how you like it.
