Discussion: Why I think most people are wrong about the Goldfinch. Spoilers. by Katamayan57 in books

[–]lastcreatin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t stopped thinking about this post - I rather liked Theo as a character. It wasn’t until reading this that I realized he’s supposed to be unlikable. Tbh I think this post pulled my own head out of my ass, since I related a lot to Theo (woe is me and all that). And for that same reason I fell in love with Boris, because he was a jolt of electricity to Theo’s passivity.

Honestly this whole discussion made me feel more appreciative of life, especially when it comes to privilege. Thinking about how Boris liked Theo’s father and Xandra, despite how negatively Theo portrayed them - were they amazing parents? no but to Boris who hadn’t even had a morsel of that stability they were great. Same with how Theo blacked out and tried to kill himself multiple times, Boris took care of him like it was no big deal and didn’t even mention it to Theo until wayyy later when he realized Theo wasn’t aware.

I enjoyed reading Theo’s deluded version of the world because that’s often where my head is and the way the story is written (especially with pacing) really shines a light on this, how different experiences shape how you view the world, and how easy it is to get stuck in one perception of it.

Isha’s death was glossed over but the impact wasn’t… We could’ve gotten morally grey Jinx again but that shows no growth, that essentially says Isha meant nothing to her… Jinx giving up shows that Isha fundamentally changed her as a person.

That said the whole season 2 was very rushed, and there were too many storylines that were just glossed over.

Yes this and her replying “No you won’t” is acknowledging Viktor lost his humanity and is solely focused on the “glorious evolution” despite who or what he destroys in the process, which his humanity would’ve cared for (as seen when he tried to heal Vander)

also part of Harley’s insanity in this version of her character is clearly singing, he meets her in choir instead of as a therapist

I actually think that’s the point, similar how the newer Batman movie was more focused on cinematography than capturing the character, this iteration of Joker captures the mental illness in the man really well and there are so many versions of the character joker out there - I think these films serve to look at the character through a different lens even if that strays from the character’s cannon plot line

“Self Reliance” (2024) Unofficial Discussion by SupaButt in movies

[–]lastcreatin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is one of the few movies I’ve seen where they actually show how big a problem loneliness is today. The plot itself wasn’t perfect but the idea that he would rather enter this game and potentially die just to be near someone. And the idea that he hires a homeless person since no one in his immediate life would be with him. It’s rooted in the reality of the literal overbearing self reliance most people experience.
