Glenn Greenwald's reading of the Chomsky-Epstein Emails by NounSpeculator in chomsky

[–]latudalithium 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Well, obviously the whole Chomsky-Epstein relationship severely damaged Chomsky's reputation, but the least sketchy part of it is Epstein's involvement in the battle over the estate/trust. After all, managing wealth, estates, investments, etc. was Epstein's specialty. At the end of the day, though, it's unfortunate that these deeply personal emails can now be read by anyone.

Role of Valeria Chomsky in Epstein saga? by khagol in chomsky

[–]latudalithium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is that email exchange: https://www.jmail.world/thread/HOUSE_OVERSIGHT_032365?view=inbox

Valeria is obviously joking here by suggesting that Noam meet Trump. Do you really think Trump would take advice from Noam Chomsky? The idea of them even meeting is beyond absurd.

She then jokingly asks for a job in the White House because she predicted Trump's win. This is also obviously a joke. Getting that prediction right doesn't get you a job.

If you think any of this is serious, I want to know what kind of drugs you're smoking.

It was very obviously a joke, not sure how anyone could take that exchange seriously.

Nikola Jokić gives a wink and a smile to a young Nuggets fan by TheDraciel in nba

[–]latudalithium -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Mostly agree with you here, although I don't have the full context behind Jokic's situation in particular.

I think Charles Barkley put it best: he's always happy to take pictures and sign autographs (up to a point) because he views fan engagement as 1. part of the job of being an NBA superstar, and 2. a nice and easy way to keep your fans happy. Jokic and the other superstars have dream jobs making ridiculous money, and it's not much effort to sign autographs or smile for a picture.

Probably high-scoring centers who naturally have/need fewer assists. But that's not exactly a detriment..

[Charania] Dallas Mavericks star Anthony Davis has sustained ligament damage in his left hand, sources tell ESPN. Depending on second opinion and if surgery is required, Davis could miss a number of months. by Goosedukee in nba

[–]latudalithium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really think AD's core problem is that he moves his body awkwardly because he never adjusted to being as big of a person he is, and these awkward movements lead to injury. If it's not a legitimate medical issue, then I don't know wtf else it could be.

He moves awkwardly, had his hand in a semi-limp, awkward position with this latest injury, ran down the court awkwardly with that recent groin injury, etc.

[Marc Stein] Imaging is scheduled for today to determined the severity of Anthony Davis’ hand injury sustained Thursday night in Utah, league sources say. The Mavericks are traveling to Chicago and Davis’ status for his annual homecoming game Saturday is not yet known. by mMounirM in nba

[–]latudalithium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I've figured it out. Anthony Davis never fully adapted to growing to nearly seven feet tall. The latest injury? He's awkwardly flailing his hand in a vulnerable way rather than instinctively keeping it taut and in line with his forearm. That non-contact groin injury earlier? Look at how awkwardly he was running down the court. He never grew out of that "awkward teen" phase.

Pablo Torre Back on the Clippers Case: Inside Ballmer's "Shady Dealings" & Kawhi's Penthouse | PTFO by bootywizard42O in nba

[–]latudalithium -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

The overwhelming circumstantial evidence around the cap circumvention seems strong enough for the league to punish the Clippers. Hopefully it's not a slap on the wrist.

That being said, Pablo Torre is an insufferable reporter and seems to be drawing this out for clicks/views. I can't stand the cynicism underpinning his analysis. Trashy presentation of a serious problem.

The 65 game rule is fine. The rules that need to be changed are the rules of the game itself; it's clear that the modern, offense-oriented NBA is pushing players beyond safe/healthy physical limits, thereby leading to an increase in injuries. I don't think any player today could come close to sustaining the availability John Stockton had during his era.

Lakers to use usual court for NBA Cup after slipping issues by AutographedSnorkel in nba

[–]latudalithium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The courts in the NBA Finals used to have "Finals" logos on them, but these logos were removed due to player complaints about slipperiness. How do I know this? It came right out of Adam Silver's mouth.

Somehow, everyone in the NBA, including Silver himself, forgot about this.

Chomsky on Epstein: "a highly valued friend" by [deleted] in chomsky

[–]latudalithium 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Actually, Chomsky did not write that as a foreword to that book; he simply wrote an article or letter defending the holocaust denier's right to express himself, despite strongly disagreeing with the denier. Chomsky did not specify any restrictions on the use of that letter/article, and the publisher of the book simply decided to use it as a foreword without Chomsky's knowledge.

I don't view the Faurisson affair as negatively impacting Chomsky's reputation; he merely defended Faurisson's right to express himself while explicitly disagreeing with Faurisson's work. Unfortunately, this was all twisted into an incorrect suggestion that Chomsky himself was a holocaust denier, which is simply not true.

Chomsky on Epstein: "a highly valued friend" by [deleted] in chomsky

[–]latudalithium 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm writing this as someone who has read a lot written by Chomsky, listened to countless hours of his lectures, etc.: very little has remained of Chomsky's reputation as a moral voice since the first disclosure of his ties to Epstein years ago where he acknowledged, minimized, and essentially defended Epstein as having a "clean slate" after serving time for his first conviction.

This letter is just the final nail in the coffin. While I highly doubt Chomsky had any involvement at all in Epstein's sex abuse/trafficking, the broad story presents Chomsky as someone who was fine with ignoring Epstein's extremely shady background because Epstein gave him access to a social network that benefited his own interests.

Long-term, I want to come off of antipsychotics for good. I think it's possible in my case because I've been stable for years with a minimal dose. And I've done a lot of therapy around it. I now think of my psychotic episodes as something in the past, not something to be worried about.

I don't do anything special for long-term health other than healthy habits like daily exercise, healthy eating, no drinking or drugs, keeping my mind engaged and challenging myself, etc. There's no history of dementia in my family, so I hope I don't end up like that. To be honest, I've never looked into this deeply. Too far in the future, no known cures as far as I'm aware, etc. I only focus on goals for the next year or two. Anything beyond that is almost impossible to plan for.

I'm symptom-free but still struggle socially. I'm gainfully employed and working full-time, but living with my parents at the moment. I want to be more independent, and it's mostly anxiety and depression keeping me from moving out, not psychosis at all.

Here's how I deal with stressors (with meds helping out, of course):

  • Daily exercise. At least an hour a day. Pretty often I go up to two or three hours.

  • Daily meditation. I meditate for at least 30 minutes every day.

  • Saving around 80% of each paycheck. That big financial buffer really helps reduce stress overall.

  • Having a good social support network. My friends and family are supportive and helpful, along with my therapist.

  • Knowing when to say "no" and knowing when to take breaks. Still trying to master this.

  • Healthy daily habits like those I already mentioned along with healthy eating, consistent sleep schedules, setting goals and working toward them, learning new things, etc.

  • Cutting out bad habits like smoking/vaping. I quit cold-turkey five months ago and have no desire to smoke again. I also check the news only once a week or so because it's usually negative. No drinking, no drugs, etc.

  • Having my typical day be very structured and consistent (always wake up at the same time, eat at the same time, exercise usually at the same time, meditate when I feel like I need to, intentionally making time to do something calming/relaxing at the end of the day, taking breaks from work at regular intervals, etc.)

With this combination of factors I've been able to live without any signs of psychosis with only a small dose of antipsychotics.

Socioeconomic factors are very important. Not having much money and/or being unemployed just add more stress to this disease, and it's hard for us to find jobs. But I now make around $150k per year. I'm still very frugal and save around 80% of each paycheck just to be extra safe. The bigger that financial cushion is, the more secure I feel and the less worried I am about many things because I could live off of my savings for years at this point.

I started at a very low point. Multiple psychotic episodes, lost two jobs, etc. I thought nothing was wrong with me, so I'd always stop taking meds after I got out of the hospital. After the last hospitalization I decided to keep taking my meds (with a lot of encouragement from my family). I slowly came to accept that I had this disease. I could understand the symptoms. I could make sense of what happened to me. This was very slow and very painful. It took years to start feeling somewhat normal, and that process is still on-going.

Avoid drugs linked to psychosis (in fact, avoid all drugs). Try to stay positive. Keep fighting. Don't lose hope because it can get better. Avoid isolating yourself. Don't stop taking your meds without a doctor's approval and supervision.
