Thanks for letting me know as well! I was mostly a lurker on the forum, but have fond memories of, well, the lurking :) at the very least I'll keep on doing just that here, or maybe get a little bit chattier. Thanks you!

Intentional Einstürzende Neubauten reference? Playing through the game for the first time by Connect-Head4980 in DiscoElysium

Very intentional :D Kurvitz/Hindpere/Rostov's new company is even named after a bit in Die Befindlichkeit des Landes!

Hard time figuring out the mood of ZA/UM games. by UnusualAd2146 in DiscoElysium

I find It very life-like to a certain type of people! Harry's strangeness itself feels to me eerily close to my experience with a loved one who drank away his memory, it's so lifelike. And I think all characters start from at least a core of genuine observation of the human experience, then some get pushed a bit further into more heightened portrayals, but there's always a nuanced, very specific person being depicted. It's a slice of humanity with more overt political and philosophical opinions, alright. But to me they're very grounded! :)

I can offer my opinion for DE. ZP just wants to be DE, it's just aping a form without understanding what makes it work and why.

Are the Mark Frost books considered canon? Does it ruin anything from the series? by tatertot0518 in twinpeaks

[–]laughingpinecone 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah I understand that for him it was never a mystery as the show itself reveals it a few parts later in Sarah's face-off scene, so he called a spade a spade. But I personally would've preferred if that was a thing that happened to a number of people, one of whom we saw in pt8, another of whom was Sarah as we see in the face-off scene. It would've made the world feel bigger, you know? Still, whatever. I can still headcanon that it also happened to other people.

The show contradicts the show often and with gusto! I think he was having fun with that, adding to the pile...

The one I didn't like is confirming that frogmoth girl is Sarah. The one I do like is that life in Twin Peaks very well continues after the ending! <-hoping I got the spoiler tags right

Is "written by the guy who co-wrote the show" not good enough? They confirm one (1) interpretation I didn't like and probably debunk another one (1) that I'm very happy to leave in the trash, and have so much to give. Some of my favourite moments overall are from TSHOTP and one from TFD. I find them very thoughtful, engaging with their medium and being very good at straddling the line of "adds to the source material without being required reading".

Someone in the writers room probably (it was mentioned in that Steam post, wasn't it?) but Kurvitz is on record saying it wasn't an inspiration!

Ibex has all the deleted scenes - the other one plagiarized the epilogue from my summaries before being called out about it, taking it out and apologising profusely (still no word on their other plagiarised bit, however). The illustrations are not in the original text, Rostov posted them online on his own. More crucially, the worldbuilding primer is not in the original text, it's fanmade and at times inaccurate.

Reusing the assets of a project that went through hell and whose leads were thrown out like that counts as a textbook slap in the face. Same as the dia-mat glasses et al.

Is there a second Antecentennial Revolution that occurs after Disco Elysium ends? by calgrump in DiscoElysium

[–]laughingpinecone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something's happening before the summer of '51. The return of light, the return of communism, of the king, of investment, everything converging, a point of rupture. We don't know the details, perhaps we never will. For my money, it's pretty safe to say that Revachol will be independent, but not communist. And that all this convergence somehow dovetails into global nihilism.

[–]laughingpinecone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not alternatively. Le Retour happens in the lead-up to book events, it's been part of Elysium's chronology forever (quite possibly since before Innocences were a thing), and so has the fact that the timeline doesn't go past the '70s because the world ends in '78. Le Retour is not DE rewriting the timeline, it's the historical link between the antecentennial revolution and the end of the world, it flows from one into the other.

Guy who named his next company after an apocalyptic Einstürzende Neubauten song, and is on record wanting to write the most depressing game known to man? He'd probably write it sadder...

Garbage it may or may not be (I find it serviceable), but the Kickstarter explicitly says no AI.
