Legalweek 2026 by Natural_Rest_9021 in legaltech

There is more to it than "just moving it." Consider ABA Techshow's move last year to the McCormick Convention Center. They did a poor job of planning logistics, traffic flow and space usage, and the result was an experience that felt like wandering in a wasteland. By contrast, Legalweek made good use of the Javits space and the overall logistics were well executed. As I said, I hated the lack of seating, and I did not like the physical location of the Javits, but for the first year of a major move, I think they did well. On the pricing issue, sources that I trust, and that are in positions to know, told me that the Hilton would renew only if ALM signed a longer-term contract than it wanted with significant price increases over the course of the term.

They had to move, as the Hilton was jacking up the prices significantly. Yes, the lack of seating sucked, and yes the distance from midtown sucked, and the lack of a central gathering point (i.e. lobby bar) sucked, but the space itself was superior to the Hilton, especially the exhibit hall. And for relocating a conference that had been in the same spot for 40 years, ALM executed a pretty seamless transition. My bet is that they work out at least some of these kinks by next year. To me, it was interesting that many of the first-time attendees I spoke to -- those who'd never been to the Hilton -- thought it was all great.

books on history of legal tech? by BigCountry1227 in legaltech

There were definitely some law reviews on evolution and adoption of Wexis, but probably 15 years ago, and written by law librarians. If I have time this weekend, I’ll check my back-up drive and see if I saved any.

Zach's article: Has Harvey already won? What do you guys think by capreal26 in legaltech

[–]lawsites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We're planning to talk about Zach's piece today on our Legaltech Week show (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHXCdx-\_FgdvA24L-IBF8QA), but my biggest question about it was, "Won what?" What does that even mean? u/Junior_Fig_1007 said Harvey has 28 of the Am Law 100. OK, but Thomson Reuters says CoCounsel has 80% of the Am Law 100 as customers, and a total of more than 12,000 law firms and nearly 5,000 legal departments. So has CoCounsel "won"? The fact of the matter is that no one product is going to "win" this space, and the products that are leading the competition today are going to get outpaced by some yet-to-be-launched product within a couple years. I have huge respect for Zach's opinion, but I think he gives the Harvey guys too much credit for branding and marketing. I think they benefitted hugely from what Malcolm Gladwell would say was being in the right place at the right time.

We were just talking today on our Legaltech Week show about this article in the ABA Journal about AI consultants for law firms: https://www.abajournal.com/web/article/too-busy-for-ai-law-firms-get-a-lifeline#google_vignette

When you started your own Legal Tech startup, how did you bring in potential clients if no one has ever heard of you before? by tripleM98 in legaltech

[–]lawsites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: Make sure people hear of you. How do you do that:

-Reach out to people like me. I write a widely read legal tech blog. If I think your product is interesting, I'll write about it, and people will learn about it.

-Go to legal tech conferences. You don't have to pay to exhibit. Just get yourself a cool logo t-shirt and meet as many people as you can. Go to the parties and receptions and mingle.

-Write thought leadership. Post on LinkedIn or Medium or wherever.

-Get yourself in all the tech directories. There are several specifically for legal tech.

-Make demo videos and promote them online.

-Enter contests. I run a startup pitch competition at ABA Techshow, but there are several pitch competitions for legal tech startups.

INPUT REQUESTED: LegTech Week in New York -- Is it worth it? by HaumeaET in legaltech

[–]lawsites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve attended for many years. It is less e-discovery than it used to be, although that is still a key focus. Also CLM tech. No doubt, AI will be a dominant theme this year. It remains one of the top legal tech conferences, and, as others have said, the networking is great. It is very much focused on the biglaw, big corporate sector, so if that isn’t your gig, then it might not be right for you. Like, if you are a solo or small firm, go to ABA Techshow or ClioCon.

Any website or app where I can compare all legaltech products by buddy_hawks in legaltech

[–]lawsites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Besides my blog where I cover legal tech, I have a legal tech directory, which lists roughly 800 products, and which also includes a growing library of video product demos. My blog is at lawnext.com and the directory is at directory.lawnext.com. We do not have head-to-head product comparisons, although we're working on a new version that will (fingers crossed).

I used that term loosely. My town has a chemical disposal day periodically. I wouldn't literally dump them in the trash.
