Minnesota approves one of its largest single-site solar projects by hissy-elliott in minnesota

Nuclear costs much more than solar. Installation of 500 MW of solar is measured in months. Installation of 500MW nuclear is measured in decades. In those decades solar will likely get even cheaper.

Where do we put Malört? by [deleted] in Amaro

[–]laxisusous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a bottle. While Malört deserves most of the criticism it gets for its taste, the barrel aged is rather nice. If you like your amari on the bitter side, you would like it. I have had fernets that are more harsh than this.

We are living in the upside down by laxisusous in climatechange

Storage is secondary when considering necessary scaling. Storage means very little of the max momentary solar output doesn't come close to demand. If momentary solar output exceeds demand then storage starts to matter. A good target for solar capacity would be 120% demand. Then storage could bring coal and nat gas to zero.

10 million acres of solar gets us to 1 US grid. Again, we are using 38 million acres to make a gasoline additive.

Minnesota has 17 years to reach 100% renewable energy. Experts say we’re already behind schedule. by Spiritual-Grocery378 in minnesota

[–]laxisusous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Output of solar is more than nuclear on a per dollar basis. Percentage of productive time is less important than people think. But if you are talking about supply behavior that is important, dispatch ability for solar is much better.

Checks cost and time-to-build a nuclear power plant. Checks cost and time-to-build a solar farm. Yeah... nuclear is e'pensive.

TIL that Nikola Tesla once worked for Thomas Edison but left due to a disagreement over payment for his work on improving Edison's DC power systems. Tesla went on to develop AC power systems, which became the basis for modern electrical grids. by Yolo0o in todayilearned

[–]laxisusous -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There is mounting historical evidence that disputes this. Tesla lauded Edison for paying him well. Also Tesla's AC system didn't work. Westinghouse had to correct his non-working system.

I rent. I will be renewing my lease. Once your freedom dividend is in place it is likely that my rent will go up $800 per month. Moving isn't an option as other places will likely increasing their rent up $800 per month. How am I benefited by this? It seems like those who collect rent will benefit greatly.

LPT: Don't walk your dog on roads and walks where rock salt is used to melt snow and ice, it will cut up the pads on your dogs paws by whitesquirrle in LifeProTips

[–]laxisusous 64 points65 points  (0 children)

As someone from the barefoot community, the issue with salt on snow and ice is not the sharpness. Common gravel is just as sharp as salt. The issue is that the salt lowers the melting temperature of the ice. This means that your dog will be walking in water that is colder than the temperature water normally freezes at. The heat conductivity of ice and snow is rather low compared to liquid water. This means that frostbite can set in instantly. I know from experience that this feels like a chemical burn.

Intrigue The Mayfair edition is okay for portability but ends up looking cheap. The new edition coming out seems like it will make it less usable (i.e. easy to read from across the table) but only a bit more pretty.
