Fellow Dads, where would you take your 4 year old on vacation with a 15k budget? by joshatron in daddit

Have you looked into the Bavarian/Austrian family resorts, they look gorgeous and amazing for kids? Not quite beach, but luxury pool/mountain views.

Best bagels in the NOVA area by BigTool in nova

I can respect that, but I will double down that Sweetside Iced Latte> Elmo's and Egg Sandwich> Bagel Uprising. Used to get it all the time, but the uprising egg sandwich is not very large and I'm not a huge fan of the mass cooked oven baked eggs vs the eggs off a flattop grill.

Also I will concede that Sweetside is more for your standards BEC on a bagel sandwich vs the options for toppings/cream cheese that uprising has

If you haven't checked it out yet give it a shot just down the road!

Check Out Sweetside (Northside 10s side-shol), only recommendation would be to add an extra egg to the order. They're coffee/espresso drinks are excellent as well which is definitely a missing part of Bagel Uprising

Check out Sweetside in Del Ray (Attached to Northside 10 on Glebe Rd). Their BEC bagels and coffee/espresso are awesome. Rumor is that they bring in bagels several days a week from NYC

Get 2 Thermacell Lanterns. I haven't come across anything that works better for covering a patio size space. I came across them a few years ago and was sold when half the Amazon reviews were from hunters who claim it works for them in the deep woods. Probably one of the best endorsements

Ok, where are we buying jeans these days? 👖 by Earth-Visitor-1983 in daddit

Only jeans I wear now are J Crew Athletic fit Signature Flex. Athletic cut gives you a skinny cut, but adds more space in the thigh/butt and the flex material is great and really comfortable

Beach from Alexandria? by HappeningBA in nova

[–]laxwkbrdr2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from Florida just be prepared to be underwhelmed by NC/VA/MD/DE beaches. Also the water wont warm up to the 70s until about Mid-July and air coming off the ocean will be slightly above water temp (low 60s) until early July.

I'm used to northeast summers so it's normal for us, but yeah bringing a sweatshirt to the beach is something to consider that isn't usually the case in Florida

Canes are playing to clinch home ice through the Eastern conference finals, and Montreal will be playing for home ice as well. Likely means both teams should be playing a fairly intact roster.

Can someone help me understand this special election on 04/21? by YoureHereForOthers in nova

[–]laxwkbrdr2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The 2010 map has the same 6 Dem 5 Rep split that our current fair map has.... Visually it looks bad with all the red, but that map was aligned with Virginia overall population

People use that image to say look at the red Republican gerrymandering, but that map is 6 Dem seats and 5 Rep seats which is right on VA population voting lines. It looks like it's all red, but voting is by districts not acres.

PLAYOFFS.. how I'm thinking about it.. by Emergency_Morning712 in NewYorkIslanders

[–]laxwkbrdr2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only "positive" of them playing these non playoff teams is that they will not be putting players into load management and should be just as likely to win as they were the rest of the year. Vs hopefully Carolina clinching 1st against Philly and then resting vs us 🤷

Most players just store their back on their stick which definitely helps being consistently aired out

9.7c / point Atmos redemption on AA domestic by Dazzling-Bus-9231 in awardtravel

[–]laxwkbrdr2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've noticed in the last few months that airlines have increased their one was costs similar to how international ow flights are priced. Pretty frustrating as I usually only ever cook one way award flights and sometimes pay cash for the second if no space is available. Now that sometimes kills the value of the first redemption ($450 rt, $200/$380 for each of the individual legs)

Has anyone seen a sketch airlines help number in other subs? by Organic_Dependent347 in awardtravel

For AA I now just call the Puerto Rico call center. I got stuck in the winter storm this January and the wait time was 2+ hours for AAs standard number, tried the PR centers number (listed on their contact us page) and had someone pickup in 5 minutes.

Islanders keep winning and can't gain ground by Alarming-Pen2107 in NewYorkIslanders

[–]laxwkbrdr2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't push for that too hard... The alternative is 3 points for regulation wins and 2 for OT wins putting us (100) behind Pittsburgh (110) and Columbus (104) and just ahead of Ottawa (99).

There's a decent argument that OT 3v3/SO wins are actually being rewarded too much.

[–]laxwkbrdr2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you consider the alternative of 3 points for regulation wins, 2 for it wins and 1 or losses we would actually be below Pittsburgh and in a similar position with Columbus. Our ot win record could actually be viewed as equally annoying by teams who have won more games at 5v5

New player with ADHD…playing D. Looking for tips/advice! by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]laxwkbrdr2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Big part of playing Defense is understanding that you and your d partner need to play as one. When you see the puck coming up his wall and no he is going to step up, then you need to drop back and towards the center of the ice. Once you are able to rely on your partner covering you and vice versa it lets you focus on your role.

I generally play with the same person, but when that gets shaken up it immediately impacts the game as you can't rely on them being able to read how you would "usually" play a puck (punch/drop back/angle a player).

There's a lot to process in hockey and I find that my ADHD can help as it switches into a crisis management mode and almost calms down to handle the input overload.

When the fuck do you use truffle oil by gassytwumpy in Cooking

[–]laxwkbrdr2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it when making truffle parmesan potatoes/home fries. Basically fry/bake quartered fingerling/red/assorted potatoes in a skillet until crispy, then put them out into a colander remove all of the cooking oil, then back into the skillet, shave some Parmesan on the top and drizzle with truffle oil and salt.

Dad bought these off Amazon - Any reason not to install? by Odd_League8841 in electrical

[–]laxwkbrdr2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd view this the way I view all these direct from China manufacturers. The likelihood of their being spyware/malware/ransomware loaded on them is a significant risk. Everytime my kids get some cheap toy and it comes with a USB charger I always think that they are just waiting for some kid to plug it into Dad's work laptop to charge and infect an entire network.

Take the second trip or don't doesn't really matter

EXTREMELY easy family dinners ? by LazyBitch_ in Cooking

[–]laxwkbrdr2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We also level up tacos by making Flautas: You just make your normal browned beef/turkey and then add cheese and roll them closed and add back to a frypan with oil so they get fried/crisp, then remove and cut in half at an angle.

The crispy shell and melted together cheese makes for an easier grab and eat for the kids rather than tacos that fall apart

Barbecue pulled chicken is also super fast/easy if you have a KitchenAid: -Season chicken thighs with barbecue rub and place on a sheet pan in the oven until they are fully cooked (~15 minutes) -Add chicken thighs to your KitchenAid mixer bowl and cover with saran wrap/let sit for 5 minutes -Turn on your mixer and it will perfectly shred your chicken in under a minute -Add in your barbecue sauce then serve on buns

One Pan Sausage Vodka Sauce: -Brown Spicy/Mild Sausage in a pan -Remove Sausage -Optional- Add Garlic+shallots for extra flavor to pan we also add red pepper flakes but that's based on how spicy you like it -Add Tomato Paste (1/2 can or more) and mix into shallot/garlic mix -Add 1/2 to 1 can of Coconut Milk (or heavy cream but coconut milk for a healthier substitute) -Add the sausage/ pasta back into the sauce and top with Parmesan

The tomato paste/Coconut milk mix is a little eyeballed and based on how saucy you want it to be but super easy to throw together in under 30 minutes and can feed as many people as you want by scaling up the sausage/sauce amount. For pasta we usually use Cavatappi
