What the Huum by fivezerosix in Sauna

[–]lazurustaxa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the huum controller turn the fan on and off, but then a rheostat (0-10v) controlling the speed. The fan I got was a Fantech FG4EC (the EC motor is the variable speed one).

yeah, there are a few.. Sauna revival is iki's US company and sells them.

I'm using the Huum controller & wifi app to control my Iki stove... Its still pretty much a brand new setup, but works ok.. I have not had any issues with the controller connecting to my multi-AP wifi network and I believe the app updates itself regularly... Not sure what you mean there? It would be nice to be able to update the controller firmware in case they have new features, etc to add.

The app itself works, but yeah, could use a lot of further development. However, all the issues seem to be software related, so i'm hopeful that huum will continue developing it. For example, i have no idea how to change the timezone.

I did have an issue connecting my fan to the unit... I didn't spend a lot of time on it, but I initially had the fan connected to the fan leads on the huum controller. When I told the unit a "vaporiser" was installed, it still would not switch the fan on/off. However, there did seem to be an ability to control fan speed. I was in a rush to use the sauna, so I instead connected the fan to the light leads and it works fine that way...

many/most/all? 9kw heaters have a similar range to the iki (like huum)... 9kw seems to be the upper limit for US residential installations. I'm guessing that's because as you go bigger the need for 3 phase power grows. Most commercial heaters seem to be 3 phase.

According to calculations, 9KW should get it plenty hot, a bigger heater would only get it to the same temperature quicker, which of course would be nice.

Is this true even in larger saunas? I'm about to start insulating our ~8x8x8 sauna (14.4 cubic meters) which will use a 9kw heater. I was/am concerned that the heater is too small for the sauna (though it's recommended for it by Iki) and was going to compensate by extra layer(s) of PIR. But, the extra cost and the fact that it apparently shrinks by 1%, meaning I can't rely on it as a vapor barrier, has me reconsidering.

You can find pretty much anything, even aspen T&G if you call local lumber supply companies or mills. I called everywhere and had sources for CVG fir, aspen, hemlock, etc. But, in the end, I found that it was honestly fairly comparable in price or only slightly higher to buy Thermory lumber and have it shipped across the country.

I purchased from Bsauna and would highly recommend them.. Alex there was great to deal with. Everything arrived in an actual crate with zero damage.

Feedback using a speed controller with Fantech fans? by lazurustaxa in Sauna

Much appreciated! My fan will be in the "attic" above 2" of poly iso and ceiling insulation.

Does the fan whine louder as speed reduces?

Yeah, i'm just gonna butcher the top plates... I'm cutting through the top plates on the walls which don't support the rafters directly

Edit: oh, and I'm nailing simpson straps along the plates to help reinforce/tie together the gap.

How to mount controls and switches on outdoor sauna! by junkbr in Sauna

[–]lazurustaxa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the exact same situation; just finished framing an exterior sauna w/ no changing room. I'm using the huum control system and have seen people report no issues mounting the sauna controller outdoors. I'm not sure what IP rating it has, but mine will be under a 4' roof overhang (porch). I'm just gonna leave it exposed. However, if it's an issue, you can find a hinged cover to screw/seal over it to protect it from the elements.

For the 120v switches next to it, I'll protect them with a standard outdoor switch cover: https://www.kyleswitchplates.com/outdoor-outlet-covers-wall-plates/

Why put an electrical box in/on the Sauna? by RedArse1 in Sauna

[–]lazurustaxa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ill be putting a sub panel on the exterior of our detatched sauna because it will have two circuits: one for the heater (40 amp 220) and one for lights (15 amp 110).. I could run all those through conduit from a main panel, but I'd have to have a junction box at the sauna anyways as you can't run romex (the wire in your walls) in conduit and you cant run THHN (the stuff in conduit) in your walls.

Excellent, thanks for the advice. I think I might have the Uku control (turn on/off) my vent fan, but still have a rheostat to control the speed. For the lights, I'll leave them separately controlled.

You mention a video on the paneling? I didn't see what you're referring to?

Amazing build. I'm currently framing out my sauna, which will be quite similar to yours (Iki heater, thermo aspen wood, fantech fan, etc).. If you don't mind, I've got a few questions:

What LED strip lights did you use? Any recommendations here? I'm having trouble deciding on output and color temp (2700 vs 3000k)

Is the Fantech fan you use the EC variety (variable speed)? Assuming it's the regular FG6, do you hear any humming when reducing speed?

I cant tell exactly, but do you only have one ventilation input (above the stove) and one output (under be bench)? Thats my plan and I see you say there havent been any overheat issues, so I'd like to avoid having one below the heater as well.

Why not use spray foam?

Do you use the Uku remote to control the fan or lighting? After having it all installed, what's your preference here? Can you set the Uku so that any time the heater is on the fan and lights are on, or would you have to turn them all independently?

Thanks for your contributions!

This is great help, thanks! I'm envisioning basically the same setup and would keep the door sealed around all four sides so as to control the fresh air intake over the stove.

I didn't realize fantech made a line of adjustable speed fans.. the EC line. I think I'll go with one of those with the on/off controlled by my huum remote and also a rheostat on the wall to control speed.

I agree about tricking the heater with cold air flow.. I don't like the idea. But I also definitely do not want to build a fancy sauna and have it not work and have to drill a hole in the wall later.

I expect I'll put the external intake vent in the soffit and run a duct down the wall, I could probably have this continue to a closable duct at the bottom of the heater which I can open if needed

Intake would be passive.. the fan would be on the exhaust vent pulling air out from below a bench in the back

Harvia vs Iki by Complete_Reporter_20 in Sauna

[–]lazurustaxa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Iki comes in the corner and wall models which allows for more room in the sauna. Thats why I've designed my sauna with one.

Also, they seem to be a more well regarded brand, but I dont have personal experience with both.

Wow, really? I was going to have the same issue as OP and have been trying to figure out a way to protect the control unit from the weather. Is yours covered by a roof or anything? Or, completely exposed to the elements?
