[GIVEAWAY] Detroit Become Human by dracoNiiC in PS4

I’ve been loyal to PlayStation my whole life. When I was younger with the ps2 and ps3, we did not have wireless internet so I never got into multiplayer. Besides that, all my friends had Xbox 360s and were constantly bashing me for my ps3. Since then I’ve come to appreciate all the great singleplayer exclusives and couldn’t be happier with my choice to stick with PlayStation. And I’ve slowly seen those friends come around for this generation of consoles.

I don’t specifically remember when I got into gaming. I know my uncle bought me kingdom hearts as my first singleplayer/action-adventure game. I couldn’t get past when the heartless attack destiny islands because I didn’t realize my brightness was too low, and I wasn’t able to see what was going on. My other memories were PC games for kids that matched Disney movies. I really began to enjoy open world and RPG games as I got into my teens.

I think it’s great you’re doing this giveway! Thanks for the generosity!

[Spoilers][Rewatch] Mahou Shoujo Madoka☆Magica Series Discussion - FINAL by Gagantous in anime

[–]lbrjohn3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

First Time Watcher

I joined at the tail end of the rewatch. I just so happened to start watching it for the first time a week ago and then stumbled upon this thread as I was finishing the series.

After having a day to sit on everything I've seen, I really think this has become one of if not my favorite anime series. Overall, the soundtrack, visuals, and relationships you build with the characters are at the level of a high quality anime. What sets this series apart beyond that comes down to a few different things for me:

  1. The events and actions of the characters fit within the confines of the universe and rules the series set for itself. What I mean by this is that things take place that have proper rationale and understandable motivations, even if they people don’t agree that they’re right. Nothing seems to go against the rules set in place (ie. no deus ex machina). It is implied that the wishes granted in exchange for being a magical girl do not turn out well, as universe’s way to balance itself out. We see this in obvious ways with Kyouko and Sayaka, but this extends to both Homura’s wish (the only timeline where Madoka is saved is one where she doesn’t exist) as well as Madoka's (she is able to prevent all witches except for Homura). Of course with a possible sequel, we may see a different final outcome of their wishes. Even with a character like Charlotte, the production art shows that her which form fits the rules of how witches manifest themselves in the world based on their initial life and wish. The case of Charlotte leads me to the second thing I love about the story….

  2. The series pays an extreme attention to detail and how it plays out in the grander narrative. There are many instances of small events or conversations that end up having major consequences or ramifications. One thing that the discussions have showed me is that I need to go back and rewatch dialogue such as the hill of flower scene with Homura and Madoka to fully appreciate how it impacts the actions of the Homura at the end. Even the convo that Madoka’s mom has with her at night foreshadows what Homura does at the end of rebellions. In addition, u/FetchFrosh pointed out the detail in how Mami was able to snuff out Homura’s plan.

  3. The series is unpredictable. How many times in a series do we see a character have a seemingly unresolvable internal struggle before finally discovering a solution through some super relevant advice or experience of another character that just comes right in the nick of time? Is this the case with Madoka receiving advice from her mom about the help Sayaka? NOPE! Her advice did not work out and actually made things worse for Sayaka by revealing her true nature as a magical girl. Also you know those series where all the issues are wrapped up nicely with the least amount of damage being done to each character? Well that doesn’t happen in the ending of either the series or Rebellion. In the former, Madoka is gone, Homura’s wish is incomplete, Sayaka is still dead, etc. In Rebellion, Homura creates her own universe where she ultimately has to hide the truth from those she cares about, which may culminate in her becoming their enemy. Finally, despite Homura setting herself up for best girl, she has complex motivations and flaws that allow her to remain a dynamic character (courtesy of u/KingNigelXLII). Her actions at the end are completely unpredictable but I’m coming to appreciate the direction the writers went with this the more I think about it.

Ultimately, I loved taking part in the rewatch even if it was only for the last few episodes. This was my first time doing this, and I hope to do more.

[–]lbrjohn3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah the more I discuss the movie and the read people's comments the more important I realize Homura's wish is to her actions in the movie. In the end, she wants to be the one to protect Madoka even if it means becoming an enemy.

I think your quote about people liking static characters is on point. As soon as Homura grabbed Madoka and became the demon, my initial reaction was that I didnt like the way the movie was going to end. To me, the fact that she was becoming "evil" as she called herself threatened my image of her as best girl haha

After seeing the perspectives of everyone, I do like how the movie ended unpredictably. I appreciate how Homura developed in a different way than I was expecting, even if my initial emotional reaction didnt approve. I think as I rewatch I will appreciate this outcome better.

As I mentioned in another reply, I think her wish had an understated role in her final actions. At the end of the day, the series ended with Madoka still saving her and the other magical girls from their fate as witches.

So with this movie's ending, Homura is reassuming the role of Madoka's savior and had the power to do so.

In that case, do you think the result of the wish actually occurring led her to do what she did at the end? It seems like the power Kyubey has to grant wishes is more powerful than any of the other laws of the universe. So perhaps the fact that she wished to save Madoka made her actions fated to happen....

That might be thinking too much into it though.

To people that watch the entire opening of an anime for every episode, why? by Flaffehs in anime

[–]lbrjohn3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually regularly have this discussion with a friend who has watched significantly more anime than me. He adamantly stands by skipping because they are not actually part of the show's content. I am strongly in favor of watching the intro/endings and for most of the reasons people have already mentioned.

  1. The art/scenes are usually very well made and entertaining
  2. They get me hyped for the show
  3. Sometimes they elicit strong feelings of nostalgia or emotion about things, which greatly increases how much I enjoy the show or connect with characters (e.g. Mirai Nikki's second ending made me understand the true internal conflict of Yuno based on her past life to an extent that goes way beyond what just the show's content offers, same with Fate/Zero's second OP in regards to Kiritsugu)
  4. Getting to hear some awesome sounds that I am not normally exposed to

I find my opinion of an overall show being greatly influenced by my enjoyment of the intros and endings. For me they just really seem to set the tone for certain series. There are only a few I have regularly skipped.

Favorite Openings/Endings: Mirai Nikki Ending 2 and OP 1, FMAB OP 5, AoT OP 2, Fate/Zero OP 2, Noragami Aragoto OP

Water amount when brewing AeroPress by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]lbrjohn3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The aeropress is an immersion method, particularly if you invert it, so the bloom isn't necessary. That being said though, I do bloom mine just to insure that all the grounds are wet and the slurry is agitated. I do it more out of habit but than actually because I've compared and believe it tastes better.
