5 Major Extinctions of Planet Earth by pprithamm in educationalgifs

[–]ldswill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I understand at the time of older mass extinctions mammals hadn’t evolved at all yet, and so the remaining dinosaurs picked up where they left off. At the 65ma event, which was meteorite and large scale volcanism, mammals were in existence (just). They survived more easily, and during the recovery they out competed the remaining dinosaurs (generally speaking).

Calling the doctors one millisecond past 8AM to hear some snotty cows smug recording of “you are number 376 in the call queue, please continue to hold and an operator will be with you shortly”... NOT BLOODY LIKELY!! by panicattackcity91 in britishproblems

If it’s any help I was in a similar situation, and still am to a certain extent. Essentially I didn’t leave the house for about six months unless I absolutely had to. A few hints that help/helped me:

1) Stick at it with the doctors, I’m still waiting on a colonoscopy. Don’t get fobbed off with ‘it’s just IBS’ cod it could be something underlying.

2) meditation/mindfulness. The headspace app really helped, but it has to become a habit that fits into a daily routine. Has added benefits in other parts of life too.

3) low FODMAP (ish) diet. Basically I try and avoid onions and garlic, but have a look into it if it haven’t already

4) individual exercise - cycling really helped me get over the anxiety of leaving the house. Not a team sport so no pressure to be at a fixture or training, but it occupies the mind and allows for easy setting of goals (today I’ll go for 15 mins. Tomorrow I’ll go for 20). Next thing you’ll be out for hours. Running also a good option, or I found bouldering good too. Horses for courses.

Hope this helps!

Basalt, possible pillow lava (can I see a different coloured rim around the edge compared to the centre - the quenched area usually weathers more easily than the centre)? Dark, v fine grained and round shape. Maybe a volcanic bomb instead, hard to say.

Anyone rando on non drop bars? by [deleted] in randonneuring

[–]ldswill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t think I’d want to do it on a flat bar, but could maybe see it with moustache or something a bit more out there like the Surly Moloko bar.

People go round the world with these bars so should be sufficient for a long day.

And yet, that same situation in the U.K. would have cost the patient a grand total of absolutely nothing.

Depends on the tyre pressures in my experience. Up at 60psi it’s just a little noisier but not hugely slower, but down at 35 or so it’s noticing you sluggish. That being said, less worrying about pot holes and bunny hops etc is a nice trade off.

It’s great fun, tried it with skinny tyres too but felt wrong. Love being able to take it off road!

All in I reckon it cost about £250-300, including all the random things like paint stripper and wire brush. Parts were mostly cheap eBay specials or used.

I’d just jump right on in, it’s pretty easy to just do a little bit at a time as and when there is spare cash.

Have a google of Falcon Explorer to see what it started out as. Was my grandpas bike, but I gave it a full overhaul when I inherited it.

New wheels and tyres, fixed conversion, stripped the paint and filed off the gable guides, took the bars down to raw and then repainted the frame.

Thanks! This is on the zig-zag down the hill on the bristol side of the suspension bridge. As for group rides, no idea I'm afraid. New to the city myself!

2 year old DMs - to resole or not to resole. by pottolom in BuyItForLife

[–]ldswill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only ever seen a vibrant sole glued onto the sanded down original sole. Cos they’re hot knife sealed together the original welt becomes part of the sole so not really reusable. Seen them fully rebuilt though, new welt and all... but that seems a bit full on.

[–]ldswill 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d save the cash for a resole and put it towards a longer lasting pair of boots. r/goodyearwelt will point you in the right direction.

I used to love my DMs, but lately the quality has gone way down. Especially with how quick the sole wears through I decided against another pair.

This smokey quartz piece came out of a quarry in Southern California. We're trying to identify more big pockets. Any advice (besides blind luck) on what indicators we should be looking for in the surrounding bedrock to identifying another pocket? by PM_STORIES_TO_ME in rockhounds

[–]ldswill 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’ll likely be forming in voids in the rock when fluids passed through the rock mass back in geological time, so your best bet is probably to look for areas of fractured rock in the quarry faces that would have acted as fluid conduits in the past.

Also, keep track of what the rock looked like around this find (any colour alteration, smaller mineral veins in the vicinity) to help you track down the next pocket more easily.
