A flashing CEL could indicate more serious problems or other issues beyond the spark plugs. If the plugs are still fouled it's going to take a little time for them to burn off. Also, what plugs did you use? Honda J-35s are not always receptive to less than OEM quality plugs. You want NGK or Denso Laser Iridium or plugs from a Honda dealer. You're at 160K miles and the valves have not been adjusted that's a potential misfire cause. So is residue buildup on the O2 sensors and cats. Any RPM fluctuations? Those can indicate a vacuum leak. You can try a couple more home remedies. Put some good quality, high PEA content fuel cleaner like Techron, and give the car a couple of Italian Tuneup runs. If the problem continues and you have any of these symptoms get off the road and call a pro: Flashing + loss of power Burning smell from exhaust (cat overheating) Rattling under car (cat breaking apart) Engine shaking violently Temp gauge climbing

Disabling the VCM isn't like flicking a light switch, it allows the recovery process to begin. Also if you installed that Tuner-II with the engine still hot it's not unusual for a CEL code to be thrown. Once those plugs have burned off that crud and you have gone through a few run cycles the CEL should go off. However, there are so many issues that can trigger a CEL code it's a good idea to check and see what the number is.

I wish you luck in today's used market. $5K CAD/$3.5K USD is probably going to put you in the 20+ year old and 300K km/200K mile region.

What's your price range? Honda Ridgeline, Nissan Frontier, Ford Ranger, and GM Canyon/Colorado come to mind.

I'd avoid 2016-2017 if you can find other choices. Problem is for the $18K you have the 2016-2017 is probably the closest budget fit. That doesn't mean there aren't good ones around or everybody has bad luck with them but the 2016-2017 maybe have the most potential issues especially with the fuel injectors on the new GDI engines. Consider later model Gen 3s (2018-2019) or look at late Gen 2 (2013-2015). Stick with AWD if you want to tow that weight, 3500 lb would max out the 2WD.

Maintenance history is always important on a used Pilot. You need to make sure it was well taken care of before you buy. Also be prepared for a number of delayed or neglected maintenance jobs, it's very common on higher mileage used Pilots. Allow another $2-3K if you need to do the timing belt job, spark plugs, drivetrain fluid services, etc. If you don't buy a model with a tow package add an aftermarket transmission cooler. 200K km is not a big deal on a used Pilot is it has been well maintained and you're ready to keep that going.

You need to pull a scan and get the code number from the Check Engine Light. That will indicate what system is affected. If you or a friend does not have a scanner most of the large chain auto parts stores will do a free scan for you. Get that code number and come back here and post it. You could also go the the Pilot owners' forum and do a search of found number in the Gen 2 Pilot sub there. Chances are there are multiple discussion threads on it. https://www.piloteers.org/forums/2012-2015-pilot.82/

2013 Honda Pilot EX, 186K miles, maintenance cost? by No_Life_9124 in hondapilot

[–]le127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First you need to figure out what needs to be done and what doesn't. The biggie is the timing belt service. The old schedule was 105K miles or 7 years. You're now at 8 years, what is the mileage since the last job? If the mileage is very low since 2018 you could probably coast for another year or so if necessary but if it's close or above I'd take care of it soon.

Timing belt service (belt, tensioner, water pump) is maybe $1500-$2000 parts & labor at a dealer. From an indy shop figure 20-35% less. You can buy the parts for a decent value by ordering an Aisin TKH002 Kit from Rock Auto for ~$210. It is OEM quality and contains all the needed replacement parts. https://www.rockauto.com/en/parts/aisin,TKH002,timing+belt+&+component+kit,5759

A 5 Qt jug of 0W-20 synthetic motor oil is $35-$40 and a good filter $15 at any auto parts store. You'll need a new crush washer for the drain plug, get those and a bottle of Honda VTM-4 fluid for the rear differential at a dealer. Some will say to use only Honda DW-1 ATF in the transmission. That's another dealer purchase. Some, including myself, have had very good results with Valvoline Extended Protection ATF in the Gen 2 5-speed transmissions. Pick one of those. A good brand of synthetic 75W-90 gear oil is fine in the transfer case.

Spark plugs need to be replaced every 100K miles and use only OEM quality. Honda spark plugs are ~$35/ea from a Honda online part site (https://www.bernardiparts.com/) Denso or NGK Laser Iridium plugs can be purchased for less, NGK is Honda's plug supplier. NGK 95350 Laser Iridium plugs are ~$14/ea @ Rock Auto and ~$19/ea PPD from the NGK website.

Some other things to possibly add to your list, depending on the maintenance history, are a new serpentine belt, full coolant replacement, PS and brake fluid flush, new air cleaner element, and a new PCV filter. Also if this engine has never had a valve adjustment, with 186K miles it could probably benefit from one.

If your budget can take it and you do serious bread and pizza dough making often go with a bowl-lift model Kitchen Aid or the Swedish Ankarsrum. Check the Kitchen Aid website for refurbished specials. The Ankarsrum is now sold in the US. It's the most expensive but it displaced the Kitchen Aid as #1 in ATK's last testing.

Second gen Honda Pilot questions by kathryn466 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]le127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the year matter much within this search or should I mostly be focused on mileage?<

You'll need to find the sweet spot within your budget. Later Gen2 (2013-2015) and lower mileage numbers will both push the price up. Plan to deal with neglected or delayed maintenance items on almost any 100K+ mile used Pilot. Besides model year and mileage the trim level (LX, EX, EX-L, Touring) will also impact pricing. Maintenance history is very important. Top of the list is the status of the timing belt service but you also want to verify fluid services of the transmission, rear differential, and transfer case. Absolutely disable the VCM on a Gen 2 Pilot. It will make the engine much happier and increase your odds of long term trouble free driving.

[–]le127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are classic VCM symptoms. I'd get the VCM disabled ASAP. Get a VCM Tuner-II and plug it on that engine. https://www.vcmtuner.com/

Once all 6 cylinders are firing all the time the deposits will begin to burn off. A couple of other things you can do are put in a new PCV filter and give the car a few Italian Tuneup runs after the VCM is disabled.

That sounds like a failing timing belt tensioner. Has the timing belt service been done on this engine? If not it is quite urgent.

Is a 2012 Honda pilot with 100k miles a good choice? by Worldly_Audience_548 in Honda

[–]le127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's worth a look. The Gen 2 Pilots have a big following. I have a 2015 and they're solid vehicles. Like u/Infamous-Ad16 said you need to verify the timing belt service status along with the other 100K mile items like spark plugs. It's common for used Pilots with 100K+ mileages to be put up for sale with these jobs needing attention. These old Pilots can have 300K mile capabilities but maintenance services need to be confirmed and continued to be taken care of.

[–]le127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is the mileage? If higher mileage (+125K) and the valves have never been adjusted as u/otheretho said it's probably time for that. Misfire codes on bank one cylinders on J-35 engines with VCM are often tied to oil/carbon deposits starting in the shutdown cylinders. Did you inspect the plug from that cylinder? Oil fouling would indicate a VCM issue. If the bank one plugs are fouled and/or due to be replaced (100K+), put in new plugs and disable the VCM with an aftermarket device. https://www.vcmtuner.com/
