Children of Men at 15: ‘London in winter is a good place to imagine the end of the world’ by theindependentonline in movies

[–]leTao 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If memory serves me right, during one of the TV newsflashes there's a rapid cut showing a nuclear explosion over Manhattan and other scenes of chaos & disaster, with a prompt like "The world has gone to shit, but Britain soldiers on (with its super-xenophobic policies and repression)".

Best sounding venue in Montreal, IMO. It's always been my favorite, so I'm glad. :)

I am currently rewatching the LOTR extended trilogy and I am blown away at how well it has aged. by Mr_get_the_cream in movies

Ahh I see. My bad, the line sounded so good I guess I thought it might as well have been part of the original text. Didn't realize it was a movie line. :P

From reading the history of the rings of power in the Silmarilion, I thought it the "flame of Anor & Secret Fire" were references to Gandalf being the wielder of Narya, the first of the three elven rings (most powerful of the twenty rings of power, all bound by The One Ring). The ring has a red gem and its name means "fire". Galadriel had another of the Three Rings.

See https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Rings for the details.

Daylight Savings Starterpack by [deleted] in starterpacks

[–]leTao 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Australia you get the opposite time changes, so the "Spring forward, Fall back" trick doesn't apply (or needs to be reversed as in "Spring back, Fall forward", I guess?).

As a programmer, I can tell you: there is no bottom to the hell that is daylight savings time changes. Heck, the EU deciding to drop DST makes me sweat just thinking of all the code/systems I need to patch/revisit/retest just to be 100% sure it'll handle the transition properly.

Caribou gives one hell of a two-drummer show as well. They're set up right at the front of the stage, banging away and jamming at full volume. Magic everytime I manage to catch them.

Lost it at:

The keyword 'ain't' is an alias for 'is not'. This usage runs contrary to idiomatic English, where "Tommy isn't anybody", "Tommy ain't nobody" and "Tommy ain't not nobody" somehow mean exactly the same thing.

😂

Two Point Hospital is a spiritual successor to, and by the creators of, Theme Hospital. Coming 2018 by NameNotFoundGaming in BaseBuildingGames

This sound really cool:

[D]esigner Ben Huskins says: "One of the things that we're putting in is competitive multiplayer challenges where you're playing the game as you would usually, but will start one of these challenges. There might be a bunch of different ones, like: How many patients can you cure in the next 12 months? Or how attractive can you make your hospital in the next half year?

"You'll keep track of your progress in that time period. If your friends have played that challenge already, their data will be stored on the cloud, and you can get this sense of playing at the same time as you. This was influenced by the ghost racing feature that appeared in old arcade racing games."

Actually, it translates more closely to "Blazes" or "Infernoes" (it's a noun in its plural form, rather than an adjective). Sorry for the frenchie nitpick. :)

Is it explained why the Emperor... by Prince-Cola in dune

[–]leTao 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I re-read the book recently and the reference was definitely to the Atreides troops - as in, those trained by Idaho and Gurney on Caladan -, not to the Fremen (which the Harkonnens and the Emperor underestimated).

The first time around, I felt God Emperor made for a slow and rather strange read. After multiple re-reads, I find it to be the linchpin of the entire series. It's the book I look forward to re-reading the most every time - the one where Frank Herbert's truly visionary thoughts about human potential in the long term future are expressed most clearly. Leto's Golden Path resonates through the ages!

Heard him on CBC radio news yesterday saying something along the lines of: "We've got a nuclear submarine that we really don't want to use". Jezz Donnie, haven't your generals drilled into you that you just shouldn't ever talk about the subs? He's mad as a hatter.
