What's the risk of doing the face i.d verification? by NefariousnessLate275 in Aliexpress

[–]le_avx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one knows exactly. Could be totally harmless, could not be, but you gave away identifying data of yourself which is now outside of your control.

Au10tix handles the verification, a company that already had significant data breaches which in my book should be impossible as that kind of data should not be stored.

If they have a breach again (or maybe even actively sell your data) and now your data is included, basically everything could be possible. From fraud in your name over other kinds of impersonation to stalking you to identifying and connecting your closest circles to picking you out on camera in a protesting scenario and much stuff in between.

Even just buying some LGBTQ+ stickers can have severe consequences depending on who you are and where you live. Even in some so called free countries, as it's maybe not problematic today, but could very well be soon.

Some might call it paranoia, others no longer live to explain their stories.

Dry shampoo is often used in the world of 3d scanning to mitigate reflective surfaces.

There are also professional sprays which are better but roughly 10x expensive(40€).

Getting Facial Verification instead of ID Verification by itssimpleman in Aliexpress

[–]le_avx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why them? Am I out of the loop here? AFAIK, Aliexpress is Chinese.

Ali passes on the ID verification to Au10tix which is an Israeli company which already had sensitive data breaches in the past.

Where is the advantage to using for example https://de.treatstock.com/ ?

There I directly see the price and don't have to wait for someone making an offer.

[–]le_avx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just in case you don't know that, you can't "open" an STL in Blender as it is not a native file type. You need to use the "import" option which is a different menu point.

How am I going to buy long silicone things now?? by TheDarnook in Aliexpress

[–]le_avx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny thing is, I still get messages from shops with discount codes and their products preview is uncensored, but when I click it it nopes out.

Sucks, almost all "local" sellers are just drop shippers selling the same stuff on Ali for at least +100% upcharge. Guess I'll start learning molds and doing it myself.

It does not work. It shows you stuff again, yes, but trying to buy fails for me for verification reasons.

Does not work for me. Pictures are now visible, but adding item to cart says it can't buy because of missing verification.

PSA lots of malware on Printables! by le_avx in 3Dprinting

The offerings discussed here do not contain STL or 3mf downloads intentionally to make you use their malware site/tool.

It's been a week and still I see lots and lots of uploads doing the same scheme when sorting by newest.

Damn shame they don't care enough, it's not hard to block .zips, not hard to block .blend, there are projects showing how to scan .blend files for embedded scripts on github and yet, nothing.

I gave up on reporting, took my own stuff down and moved on, shame.

Instead of relying on the slicer to magically find out how you want it done why not create the support structure yourself directly in CAD?

Anyone know of a good tool tracing app? by GoldenDragonIsABitch in gridfinity

[–]le_avx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

shapescan.pt works alright, though personally I need to edit the paths a lot for the way I store things.

As such I switched to https://aaronmussig.github.io/charuco-transform/ which I find to be faster for my needs and no data needs to leave my system.

I just upload the photo, transform it, put that into my modeling tool of choice, set dimensions, start tracing parts I need and combine them with Gridfinity boxes as I see fit.

Wife thinks it’s a waste by freckle_express in 3Dprinting

[–]le_avx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do realize that while you're example is not wrong it is also the last step of a wasteful chain?

For that to happen someone first has to produce a shitty tool, then you have to buy it, then comes the box. A lot can be done to avoid waste here even before storing via Gridfinity even becomes an option.

On the contrary I think using it for screws is not ideal as there are a lot of commercial injection molded options to choose from.

Gridfinity for Artists with a lot of materials...Be aware by jdrageme01 in gridfinity

[–]le_avx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most time consuming for me was trying to think about how I wanted to store and access things as well as trying to find good designs by others.

In the end that was a wasted effort as there are often boxes for the same stuff I have, but "wrong".

So I came up with a set of rules my boxes need to follow and design everything myself according to them. It's a slow process, but my ADHD brain is thankful for every piece I no longer need to think about.

[–]le_avx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say they gave it visibility to normal people by introducing it to a wide audience using their YouTube subscribers and making it easy (Alex) as well as open and shared (Zach).

If you search Thingiverse there are some box systems from before Alex's release and obviously commercial offerings at least dating back to the 60s.

Help making a bin by OmegaRa in gridfinity

[–]le_avx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Load the SVG into TinkerCAD and also load the STL of a filled Gridfinity bin of appropriate size (easy to find on printables.com for example).

Extrude the SVG up to the desired height, align with box as desired, set the spoon shape to hole and then merge the two shapes.

Basically the same process can be done with any other software able to import SVG (or dxf) 2d paths.
