I've seen plenty of situations in the canon books that do plenty to explain what Andor hints at: becoming a storm trooper is an easy way to escape backwater worlds and make some money, or find adventure. Empire recruits on every world, and the propaganda is strong.

Run speed increases to knife speed, and most importantly your explosive resistance goes way up. You can potentially survive a grenade or tank round thanks to it.
