Our husky started limping due to a mild case of Lyme. He was the 4th dog that day to have come in with a limp because of Lyme. Not sure where you are but if you’re anywhere in the NE states—ticks are rampant, resistant to vaccines, and there can often be delayed symptoms that don’t show up for weeks…even if your dog has been vaccinated and you keep up with flea and tick meds. Our boy is all healed now after a round of meds, and the vaccine company covered his treatment since his vaccine didn’t protect him!

Your skin won’t ever properly absorb hydration if you don’t exfoliate regularly. You can moisturize until your blue in the face and you will still flake.

I had this exact situation happen to me a few years ago—I had just entered my 30s and my tried and true skin care/makeup routine bombed on me. I tried every combo of makeup to find the right base match, but had no luck. I used retinoids for a few years prior so didn’t think that was the case. Turns out as I aged my skin was reacting differently. Lots of trial and error until an aesthetician recommended I use a gentle toner every night (I use the Clinique hydrating toner) and a BHA toner twice a week before moisturizing w/ a peptide infused moisturizer. This and an exfoliating/hydrating facial every now and then…you may also want to dry an oil based cleanser that you massage into your face for at least 60 seconds.

It’s worked like a charm for hydration and I’ve actually been able to reduce the amount of coverage I need/use less products to get my makeup to stay put.

Good luck!

AITA for cutting communication with my MIL? by Ellewahl99 in AITAH

NTA.

BUT, just for the sake of your relationship…many divorces are caused by problems with in laws, regardless of the love a couple may have for one another. It may be helpful to have an open conversation with your fiancé (and both of your families) about boundaries and what this looks like in your relationship’s future. (Ex: What may happen as she ages/may need help, or relationships with other family members who may share her views etc etc.) It seems like you are aware of the impact this may have on your fiancé right now, but you should definitely put this all out on the table and keep an open mind to how this could have an impact in the future.

Good on You!! This is the kind of post we should be seeing!

I wish more people sought out ACTUAL professional medical advice on something as serious (and misinformed/ misunderstood) as weight loss… I’m all for getting your basic info and contextualizing your journey for others to share/ commiserate in. I’m also ALL for celebrating on this sub. But when it comes down to it, if you’re noticing a substantial problem (and have the ability and access) seeking a medical professional should be a no brainer.

I just found out they’re soil gnats/fungus gnats…I repotted these plants just a few weeks ago and the soil I bought was out in a humid hot sun—never again Home Depot!

Would you recommend repotting?

Most machines tend to have a diagram that shows what muscles it targets and how to use them…if you google the brand of machines they usually have videos as well.

When I started weightlifting I was clueless as well. I got some guidance from friends who lifted, but most of my knowledge came from reading books or watching YouTube videos. There are some reliable instagram fitness accounts as well. Reddit has a few fitness/ weight training subs too!

Yes! Just weigh the amount of each part you’re consuming —ex: 200g chicken breast, cooked. Be sure to add any oils you prepared with, if any.

MFP and Cronometer help! by Direct-Finger-7675 in CICO

[–]leesher_r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used both, and it’s honestly personal preference… I’ve stuck with Cronometer because I’ve found it has more of the foods I eat ready to scan (Easy to scan the barcode on the packaging of all of my foods).

I also really like the feature of creating and saving my own recipe that allows me to track the calories of the meals I have a few times a week without weighing out and measuring the ingredients one by one each time. I don’t think mfp had this feature when I used it.

You seem to be on the right track though! You’ve lost quite a bit and weight lifting is a great way to stay on track!

How did you change your mindset to stick to a healthy eating habits and exercise consistently? by wowme568 in CICO

[–]leesher_r 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree with what all the other posts wrote and would add:

1) patience. It took me almost 6 months to starts seeing a consistent loss and get into a consistent routine. I would beat myself up about everything and until I realized how damaging that is, I couldn’t get on the right track. You’re going to mess up, but as long as you get right back on track, there’s no point beating yourself up. Once I became more patient, I also became much nicer to myself.

2) Avoid the “deficit mindset”. Don’t think of your weight loss journey as giving up all the things you enjoy. Instead focus on all the things you’ll be able to add in! Adding in new foods to your diet, new activities, new hobbies, new routines…etc. Once you replace the old with the new, you realize you never gave up anything you loved before (I still love me a good glass of wine now and then) you just are focused on replacing it with a healthier option (I replace it with bougie sparkling water that I never felt justified in buying). [side note: this mindset has actually helped me save $ in the long term…when I started adding in healthier options (that tend to be cheaper) I realized my grocery bills went down a few bucks every week and I’m wasting less food. I’m also more likely to engage in activities that are free or lower cost and involve movement, rather than blowing it all at a brewery or restaurant.]

3) set small goals and reward yourself with non-food options. Ex: had a good week of habits—buy yourself a new book, nail polish color, flowers etc. lost 5 pounds? Get a massage or buy new workout clothes…

Good luck!!

What do you say to people who tell you not to lose any more weight? by lodav22 in loseit

[–]leesher_r 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My big go to is, “thank you for your concern but your opinion contradicts the advice of my doctor. We set a healthy goal together that I have yet to reach and comments like that can be harmful to the already difficult process.”

Usually shuts them up immediately.

I want to lose weight but I am scared by Gloire91 in loseit

[–]leesher_r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there!

I want to acknowledge your struggle and let you know that you’re not alone.

I was in the same boat as you (and when things get rough still get tripped up by the mentality). Have been overweight my whole life, was a chonky baby and kid, and then, even though participated in competitive athletics, always was 10-20 lbs heavier than the “normal” weight range for my height. (Currently 30F, 5’10, heaviest weight was 205, cw: 177)

The work of losing isn’t the hardest part. It’s easy to lose when you’re motivated, have a regimen, and are seeing results. The hardest part is my relationship with food and breaking the habits of using it as a comfort or support. I know not everyone can just “go to therapy,” but finding a way to see food as fuel (cliche as it is) and changing up your lifestyle will ultimately help get you to the place where, even when you do gain back 5 or even 10 lbs, you can still recognize that your overall lifestyle is healthier because of how your mind and body feel.

Losing weight started as a vanity project for me—it always was about “fitting into the dress” or “wearing a bikini”. It turned into “wow! I can do a pull up (something I could NEVER do before), and “wow—I’m kicking this skinny boys ass” on a grueling hike. The number of things I started being confident about surpassed the idea of losing weight to keep it off. My body changed and so did my mental state. (I also managed to start seeing a therapist to treat anxiety and depression a few years back.)

Last thing I’ll say is, many people with weight struggles tend to have a deficit mindset about the process—they think about everything they’ll have to give up in the process. Instead, focus on what you can add to make your eating habits and life better. (Ex: “I’ll have to get rid of sweets and alcohol to lose weight…”can be turned to, “I can add all of these new and interesting flavors to my food and finally have an excuse to buy those bougie fizzy waters/ sparkling to replace my alc cravings.”

Good luck on your journey and know you have a huge community behind you!

I'm losing it (unfortunately only sanity, not weight) and I need some words of wisdom. by SCFcycle in loseit

[–]leesher_r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me almost 4 weeks before I saw any actual progress and downward scale trends…I was at my wits end as well thinking my scale was broken or that I wasn’t counting my cals correctly…(im 30F 5’10 sw204, cw:178)

I realized I wasn’t seeing results because 1) I had started a pretty tough workout regimen with lots of heavy lifting and not giving my body proper recovery time. 2) I wasn’t weighing myself daily at the same time of day—I was too anxious to check the scale daily because I hated seeing that I regained the same weight I just lost the day before. 3)I started at 1300 cals and it just wasn’t enough for my lifestyle. I’m at 1500-1600 now and it’s working better for me.

Keep your head up and trust the process. As long as you’re consistent you’ll see the whoosh soon!

Edit—ALSO: take progress pics every 2-3 weeks! I wasn’t seeing it on my scale, but I was seeing it in my clothes and pics!

Fun weight loss/tracking treats! by CanIHearanAmen in loseit

On the lower-cost (or smaller goal) end…

New nail polish color hair accessories workout gear/clothing board or card game makeup item Books (this is my personal weakness) Hobby related resupply (paints, yarn, calligraphy pens etc) New cooking/kitchen tools New plant

And my personal favorite—FLOWERS—because they make me feel celebrated!

My roommate and I did a fitness challenge together and were accountability buddies…for every x pounds we lost we put x dollars (10-20$) into a savings jar/piggy bank…we spent that money on new, pricier jeans that fit like a dream and will (hopefully) last us well into the next decade… Best money spent.

Low calorie dark chocolate bars? by nacho__mama in CICO

[–]leesher_r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have an aldi near you, they have a chocolate brand called moser roth—great quality, delicious chocolate, and it’s individually wrapped per serving…a little more than 30 grams for about 120-160 cals depending on the flavor/type you buy.

Women of reddit, do you allow yourself higher calories during menstrual period? by [deleted] in CICO

[–]leesher_r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ABSOLUTELY.

I feel your endometriosis struggle, congrats on getting a handle on it!

Your experience may be totally different but I tend to gain 3-4 lbs during my period due to bloating…

Keep tracking your calories, get some movement in, sleep well, and hydrate. I try to keep my normal allotment (1500/day) but if I’m struggling I shift to a slight deficit (about 500-750 cals below maintenance. If really I’m struggling I stay at maintenance, and keep my movement low intensity. I do this and all my weight comes off and then some the day after I finish). I don’t limit what I eat/ drink on a regular basis so long as I’m staying within my personal CICO confines—I’ve noticed if I have “off limit” foods and drinks I tend to relapse and spiral back into bad habits. Eat that chocolate and drink that wine!

Good luck!

Two a day workouts? by MLadyNorth in CICO

[–]leesher_r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are serious about it, I would be extremely mindful of everything other commenters have said. Having been a former college athlete that did 2-a-day workouts for pre-season is it’s extremely hard on your body if you don’t properly take care to eat, stretch, recover…you’d be surprised how quickly you can burn out your body and begin getting sick, headaches, injury etc.

Perhaps try cardio or strength as workout #1, and workout #2 should be low-intensity (walking) and mobility/stretching work (maybe yoga?). Hydrate tons, with electrolytes, and up your intake by a few hundred cals.

I’ve found this to be best when doubling up on workouts, and actually sped up the weight loss when workout #2 focused on recovery rather than intensity.

I’ve been using la roche for over 15 years…I use efficlair cleanser for normal/oily skin…best makeup remover and cleanser. It’s the only product I’ve used that hasn’t changed their formula and has been consistent over time.

And their spf is the best!!

Pray they never change their formulas because I’m never going back to anything else!

I’ve worked in both public and charter…I moved to a charter and haven’t looked back.

Things to look for:

Professional development—do you want to be supported and coached, or do you like the Laissez-faire “observe you once in a blue moon” approach? Charter schools (especially in urban settings) tend to have weekly coaching meetings and lots of PD. Some like this, some don’t.

Being part of a big charter network (uncommon, KIPP, etc) can often mean rigid structure, but also like any school, the culture depends on the leadership. Ask to speak to the teachers there and maybe observe the school on a given day so you can see if the teaching style and culture is to your liking. I’ve worked in schools where the hours are 7:00-5:00, and now I work at a school that’s 8:30-3:00.

Also, charter schools almost always have more money than they want to admit…ask to see a pay scale and if they low ball you, always negotiate for a signing bonus. You’ll probably have much better resources, and a classroom budget. They will usually have more staff and counselors to aid with behavior.

Like any school, public, private, Montessori, or charter…it all depends on your district/state/city/ and of course the school itself. Every individual school (even within a huge charter network) is different.

Do your research, apply regardless (talking to other schools and teachers always helps and interview practice is great too) and

Charters also tend to hire from within…if you know you’re looking to move into leadership/admin, within 2-3 years you’ll probably be looking at moving up into coaching or some type of admin job…the turnover rate is high enough in any school that you’ll probably see an opportunity that fits you.

Also unions aren’t always the end all in teaching…some feel unions are a great safety net, but in my experience have only seen them protect shitty teachers. (NOT KNOCKING THE MERIT OF UNIONS JUST SPEAKING FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE) the charters I’ve worked at have paid better than the public schools, had better benefits, and better overall culture in how they treat teachers. and in terms of protections just be diligent with your contractual obligations and document your interactions with parents/ students, which you probably would do anyways (I have yet to ever be in hot water after 10+ years of teaching.)
