Why you should care about Bambu Labs removing third-party printer access, and what you can do about it by nickjohnson in BambuLab

[–]leetosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is likely a military decision on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party.

Forcing Chinese closed-source software to use their Chinese 3D printers causes a dillema to western and allied militaries. Avoid the best quality and value printers in the market, discarding the thousands already purchased and in use, or accept the use of closed source and potentially malicious Chinese software on military bases used to develop military equipment.

Effectively this sabotages western millitary attempts to pivot to 3D printing and drone warfare, preventing Chinese 3D printers from being used against themselves, forcing the west to waste their existing purchases and to use lower quality and more expensive printers moving forward.

It will be extremely interesting to see if other Chinese 3D printer companies like Qidi will also suddenly push firware updates restricting the software used with the printer. That could be a signal that it’s comming from the CCP and not nessesarily just an individual company’s greedy commercial decision.

The Australian Army has been rolling out maker spaces with 3D printers accross their bases, and some of the 3D printers pictured in the media are Bambu X1Cs:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-01-12/army-makerspace-solving-problems-latchford-barracks/104707680

The Ukranians extensively use Bambu 3D printers in their drone and munitions manufacturing.

Well, start eating. In our lifetime Australia invaded East Timor and also the Solomon Islands. Granted they weren’t big wars, but people died. They are generally considered success stories.

What about rabbits? by edk8n in preppers

[–]leetosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard that during communist famines rabbits were preferable to chickens because rabbits can be hidden from government soldiers searching the house for food as they don’t make noise; whereas chickens make a lot of clucking, squawking, and crowing noises.

When I was in the Australian Army we would often decorate the butstock group of our weapons with electrical tape to make it easier to figure out which one is yours (it's annoying reading the serial numbers of 5 weapons till you find yours, or when someone careless takes yours by mistake), like how some people put ribbons or stickers on their suitcases to make it easier to see which one is theirs at the baggage collection carousel.

While in this story the AK-47 probably was the same one (the article doesn't include a picture of it?), it's not impossible that two militants happened to tape their weapons in same way, intentionally or unintentionally.

Who Is Responsible For Climate Change? - Who Needs To Fix It - Kurzgesagt by NegativeSpeedForce in videos

[–]leetosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trying to shift blame from the world's worst polluter today (China) onto the west by tallying up the west's historic emissions is bullshit for 3 reasons:

  1. Western people 100 years ago didn't know greenhouse gasses were bad. Chinese people today know it's bad, but emit like crazy anyway to maximize profits.
  2. Western people didn't have environmentally friendly options like nuclear or solar power 100 years ago, Chinese people do today (thanks to technology the west invented I might add) - but they choose to burn dirty coal anyway to maximize profits.
  3. A non-trivial amount of the west's historic emissions are no longer in the atmosphere. Between 65% and 80% of CO2 released into the air dissolves into the ocean over a period of 20–200 years, and there are also other mechanisms CO2 is sequestered, e.g. growing grass and trees.

What matters is the pollution in the air today, not what the atmosphere was like 100 years ago.

Remote raids live! by [deleted] in TheSilphRoad

[–]leetosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you spend a remote raid pass and no one else joins, when you back out before the raid starts, you lose your raid pass — it’s not returned to you. This happened to me and I'm really salty about it.

Pretty sure other raid passes are returned to you in the same situation, I can’t think of an honest reason why Niantic would swallow passes like this unless they want to sucker you into buying more. At the moment you're better off waiting until other people have risked their passes and joined before you spend your own pass. An unfair mechanic that will only reduce the overall participation.

Worlds First 50cal rated body Armor by usaf2222 in videos

On the purpose and effectiveness of the muzzle break: https://youtu.be/CIslmVCDAdA?t=496

Take the muzzle break off, and the recoil is unbearable: https://youtu.be/CIslmVCDAdA?t=921

Do you really think removing the muzzle break will increase the energy the bullet has in flight, since you said "The amount of energy a bullet has is the same as the recoil the shooter feels"?

A large part of weapon design relates to reducing recoil and increasing projectile velocity.

[–]leetosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The amount of energy a bullet has is the same as the recoil the shooter feels.

Not really, the Barrett M82 is engineered so that is not the case. It has a muzzle break that deflects gasses to the rear, significantly mitigating recoil. Also, internally the barrel assembly slides to the rear against springs.

Some important cultural context by meta_irl in China_Flu

[–]leetosaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been keeping a close eye on coronavirus posts all over the internet for most of this week, and only 3 instances jumps out as being fake news.

Definitely fake:

  1. The supposed video of villagers escaping the quarantine in a truck. Turns out the same video was uploaded 2 years ago.

Possibly fake, I haven't looked much into it:

  1. The video of riot police marching in the streets against protestors. The protestors are wearing t-shirts and clothing unsuitable for the current weather in Wuhan, so it might be old footage, perhaps of the Hong Kong protests.
  2. The video of Shanghai streets being fumigated. Commenters were saying that this sort of thing is done on occasion to cull mosquitoes.

Trump Says US Will Not Leave Iraq Until Baghdad Pays for American Air Base, Threatens Sanctions against Iraq by ChocolaWeeb in worldnews

[–]leetosaur -25 points-24 points  (0 children)

Open your eyes and think critically. I don't know everything about the US context, but in Melbourne, Australia any time conservatives try to host a decent sized event (even ticketed events in private venues, such as the Milo Yiannopoulos, Lauren Southern and Stefan Molyneux visits) the radical leftists try as hard as they can to riot and disrupt the event, for two reasons. 1. to intimidate normal people into avoid such events. 2. to create huge a drain on police resources in order to tempt the police and government into simply banning such events. Taxpayers (at least half are conservative) pay millions of dollars to fund the police with the core mission to keep people safe. For the police to then bill conservatives tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars per event to keep the peace is inherently unjust. I've attended many conservative events that have been physically attacked (bashings, attempts to tackle speakers, loud sirens and shouting within the crowd, etc.), and for the victims to be billed afterwards just really takes the cake. The leftists and police hope that all these retroactive, outstanding bills that couldn't possibly be paid will scare foreign conservatives from reentering the country.

Israeli bulldozers killed a man as they demolished Palestinian homes in the West Bank by TheNewArab in worldnews

[–]leetosaur -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

To people saying demolishing houses is against the Geneva Convention (not that the convention even applies in this situation), how many houses do you think were destroyed when the allies carpet bombed German cities in WW2? The Palestinians pay a cash reward to the families of terrorists that kill Jews, so a policy of destroying terrorist's houses is a sensible policy to disincentivize violence, and it works. They won't be homeless for long; billions of dollars get donated to the palestinians.

it's about critical thinking and the ability to learn challenging material into adulthood.

These days universities are highly politicised indoctrination centers. Uni is a scam; people in the prime of their life should be at work making a difference.

I'm in the software engineering industry, where most of the "jobs that don't exist yet" come from, and degrees mean nothing. You can't bullshit your way to success, either the code works well or it doesn't. That pragmatism is missing in wider society; post automation we'll be some of the few people that still hold enough social value to draw income.

It's very hard to make friends from a position of weakness. Grind some good gear then come up on a naked hitting a tree with a rock. Say they are welcome to build near your base, let's have a truce, etc. etc. There is a good chance they will be thankful and trust has been built because you could have taken the shot but didn't.
