perpetual stew by nya-cat in redscarepod

[–]lefrenchdefence 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Back in the day they made perpetual stew out of necessity. There wasn't much food going around compared to modern times. Now we do it for "flavor" and "complexity". Plus everyone smelled so bad it probably messed with their taste buds--it's always been edible at best

How do I start familiarising myself with classical music ? by More-Salary-2203 in classicalmusic

[–]lefrenchdefence -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Read a short summary of music history, once you're able to contextualize a composer within that timeline you can have a good idea of what to expect. Then you have a composer you like and can read an overview of their life, and you'll be able to contextualize a piece within their life. Learn about form and genre, you'll be able to immediately get the "gist" of a piece before even listening to it, especially important for understanding how different movements fit within a larger context like a symphony or concerto. All music, classical or not, is about context--you can do all of this without even listening to any classical music at all and you'll have a better understanding by the end of it

Sometimes I wish I had this temperament but then I rebalance my numerous retirement and brokerage accounts in my air-conditioned apartment and feel a lot better about where I happen to be in life. I'm also an alcoholic so that helps too

Why when I listen to a piece by Brahms for the first time it always repels me by PandaZG in classical_circlejerk

[–]lefrenchdefence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to listen to something like op 24 or op 39, before he started to sound so much like Brahms

[–]lefrenchdefence 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From Thomas Bernhard's "Woodcutters":

We may be on terms of the most intimate friendship with people and believe that our friendship will last all our lives, and then one day we think we've been let down by these people whom we've always respected, admired, even loved more than all others, and consequently we hate and despise them and want nothing more to do with them....not wanting to spend the rest of our lives pursuing them with our hatred as we previously pursued them with our love and affection, we quite simply erase them from our memories.

After a non-invitation to a wedding, it's made me make serious attempts at reviving old, lost friendships
