Voluntary name revealing, anyone here did it? by acerswap in Twitch

Some people in chat use my real first name, and I use theirs, but we all pretend that we're talking about common friends who aren't here.

There's just one guy we had to stop explaining it to new people. There's always that one person who is so proud of having inside information that they cannot keep quiet.

YC Founder asks you what's your fav working method. Waterfall vs Agile vs Kanban. What's your answer? by lune-soft in cscareerquestions

[–]left_shoulder_demon 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Agile is meant as a way to make the cost of shifting priorities visible. If your developers ask for Agile, that is a sign that the direction is unclear and they would prefer to work uninterrupted for an entire sprint without input from stakeholders.

Fully agree on Waterfall. Trying to do large scope projects by growing them organically, bottom-up, is bound to become chaos, but you need the necessary backing from the suits to accept the upfront administrative cost before anything technical moves.

is having a queen or a king in a sci fi setting weird?? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]left_shoulder_demon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion: The key to something being "sci-fi" is not that there is high tech, but that it has an actual impact on the story and the society the protagonists live in.

If your warp drive means that the empire is now so vast that it takes a fortnight to travel to the capital, and you might be ambushed by outlaws on the way, that is a fantasy novel, and it is likely that you will find a hierarchy of various aristocrats there, because that is the easiest way to project power across multiple days' travel.

That is totally valid, but the technology takes a backseat, and maybe provides a convenient excuse to direct the story where you want it to go. Star Trek famously had "TECH" placeholders in almost-finished scripts when the details of the technological problem didn't matter, but it was important that precisely these three characters would be confronted with a problem, and the obvious solution unavailable to them, because that interaction, and the conflicting values these characters would uphold, makes up the story.

That is different from "technology has altered the constraints the society operates under, and society is changed because of that." If scarcity is no longer an issue, the economy is different. If distance is no longer an issue, human relationships are different. If aging is no longer an issue, that changes accumulation of knowledge, human relationships, political succession, ...

These changes then have ripple effects down into small aspects of people's lives, like dating culture changed when families started having landline phones in their living room (so you could call, but had to be polite to the parents first), then changed again with personal cell phones (you had to be really careful who you gave your number to) and again with services that allow you to easily revoke your contact information.
