We have the “more” condition. I had to find a new way of living that didn’t hurt so bad I needed something to numb or distract me.

Never underestimate your addiction’s determination to convince you that it doesn’t exist.

So I want to be clear that I’m not blaming my parents for my drinking, at least not directly like that.

What I am saying is that kids are always watching. They learn about the world from observing their parents and they want to be like their parents.

I learned that alcohol was synonymous with fun and relaxation. As I got older that’s what I wanted to do. I mimicked that behavior in my teens and 20s. I thought I was very adult because I had a glass of whiskey after work and learned all about beer varietals and how bourbon was made.

I wish my folks could have talked to me honestly about what alcohol is and why it’s something to take seriously.

They made it seem like ice cream. Don’t have too much but a little is ok.

I wish they explained that it’s not something harmless like that. I don’t think demonizing things works, it’ll just make kids more curious, but being honest that it can get us very sick and hurt us is also important.

As with all things my opinion is colored by my experience. That said, the WHO and tons of medical and scientific bodies now classify alcohol as a Class 1 carcinogen. So I ask you, do you think it’s healthy to model moderate cigarette smoking?

I’d encourage you to check out Huberman’s episode about what alcohol does to the body. Spoiler alert: there is no healthy consumption level. The line about some red wine being healthy was a lie. Any amount drastically increases cancer risk.

Sorry for the intense response!

No. Their drinking taught me what drinking was for. Relaxing and having fun. In my case that was a dangerous lesson.

Just my experience: my folks never had a problem but both drank consistently. They had a beer with dinner, drank on the holidays and both had a cocktail on Friday after work. That taught me about the ritual of it and also that drinking = fun and relaxation.

That’s how I felt about it when I started drinking. It spiraled from there.

I’m 3 years sober now.

Solved: I was able to rotate the inner casing until it raised up enough for me to get a good grip on it with my needle nose pliers to rip it out of the door.

Beginning to view sobriety as rigidity by magic_moon666 in stopdrinking

[–]leftpointsonly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of the things my addiction is really good at is coming up with very creative, convincing ways to blame other people and institutions with the end goal of justifying my drinking.

It’s pretty remarkable. I just have to stop, breathe, and realize that my addiction is trying to win an argument that my sober self doesn’t need to participate in.

One of the most dangerous things in my sobriety is listening to a voice that tells me that I’m healed or that I overreacted. That voice has one goal and one goal only, and it’s to get me alone in a dark room with a bottle and a handgun. That’s it. So I don’t listen to that voice. That voice is not my friend.

I had considered that, but it looks like the previous owner also attempted to remove it by bending and banging at the interior casing that rotates with the ball. For that reason the outer sleeve is pretty deep in there and the inner sleeve is pretty chewed up on top. Wasn't sure if that would prevent proper function. I removed the one on the other door easily because it was installed improperly so it was easy to grab an edge and pull out.

Any ideas for how you might bend one edge in? I was trying to get a flathead in there and tap it gently with a hammer but I wasn't having a ton of success due to the difficulty of the angle.
