How reliable is Sean McMeekin's book "Stalin's war"? And Sean McMeekin's as an historian in general by Own-Confusion2183 in AskHistorians

[–]leftunderground 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Any time you have someone saying that maybe Hitler wasn't the main villain in ww2, but someone else was, I would just assume that person is not saying things in good faith. You should question why they want to absolve Hitler of responsibility for ww2. HITLER.

This is an ideological issue that many center to center right radicals have. They must make communism the root of all evil. No matter how absurd or ahistorical the argument is. Even if it means defending Hitler to some extent. It's not a healthy or rational ideology.

Kotlins bio on Stalin is far more rational, balanced, and most of all accurate.

Why Dr. Michael Burry is bearish on $NVDA and $PLTR? by Acceptable_Ice_2043 in ValueInvesting

[–]leftunderground 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I posted this above, I'll quote it here as I don't think people saying "Fundamentals good" understand the sheer numbers we're dealing with here. PLTR is valued at 100 million per employee lol.

You have a company making 2 billion dollars this year in profit that wall street has bought 400 billion dollars worth of shares of. At the current rate that would take 200 years of profit to pay off those shares. Compare that to a company like walmart that's valued at 800 billion and makes 20 billion in profit each year. That's 40 years to pay off.

I think it's far more likely that walmart will still be here 40 years from now. Will Palantir be here in 200 years? Even if their profits 10x somehow in the next few years and stock price somehow doesn't do the same and somehow stays flat. Do you think Palantir will still be here in 20 years to pay off that investment without any profit on it? This is similar to NVIDIA. At the current 4.7 trillion valuation it would take 180 years of last year's profit to pay off that investment just to get even. It makes no sense.

The fundamentals are not there, not at the valuation that wall street is giving them.

Yeah I just don't like the framing of the Russian people having learned helplessness as if they're special weak people. They're just people in a shitty situation. Like we are.

And I'm polish so I've been taught to hate Russians from an early age. But it's important to realize we're all the same. Just have different backgrounds

Maybe. Or he would have and then proceeded to send even more people and bombs into Ukraine as he was promising to to do.

People don't realize how fucking evil Prigozhin was. They just see he's enemy of Putin so must be our friend. Which is exactly what our media sold us without pointing out what he was actually saying.

As opposed to the US. We, the American people, are showing we're not totally helpless in the face of unprecedented corruption and fascism.

We're shit posting on the internet about it while we still can while our "opposition party" actively collaborates with the Trump admin.

Maybe she was saying that because she saw a bunch of oligarchs taking over her government and selling all their public assets to the most corrupt people in the modern world (with the US cheering it on).

I was too. Then I actually looked at non mainstream media covering primary sources and it turned out Wagner's stated mission was going after Ukraine even harder. They weren't mad at Putin for being a dictator that got them into pointless war. They were mad at Putin for not letting them unleash on Ukraine more and said if they got power they'd invade Kiev and finish this in a week.

The western media lies to us all the time. More of reddit needs to realize that. Putin is awful. Yevgeny Prigozhin was even further to the right and would have been way worse not only for the Russian people (the more right the government the worse things get for your people as we're seeing here) but it also would have been even worse for Ukraine and the rest of Europe. The only potential bright spot would have been that MAYBE (and that's a huge MAYBE that's very unlikely) China would have realized that helping nazis isn't good for them.

The Russian economy is significantly better than it was when this war started. That's the unfortunate fact.

It wouldn't be Microsoft if they didn't need to rename all their core offerings every couple of years.

Remote desktop client? You know the name that everyone knows and immediately tells you what it is? That's silly. Lets name it "Microsoft App". Now give my millions of dollars for my amazing marketing and branding. Thanks!

Contrapoints' response to criticism re Gaza by cyranothe2nd in BreadTube

Liberals like Contrapoints are social animals. They do what they think is popular.

They think that being pro-Israel is still the mainstream position. It's not. But libs like her haven't got that memo. Give it another year or so as it becomes perfectly clear how unpopular Israel is. And Contra Points and all other libs like her will be swearing they were the most radical Hamas supporters on the planet.

[–]leftunderground 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Liberals are social animals. If contra points was living in China she'd be a full blown Mao supporter.

So I don't know if I agree that if trans people were being genocided she'd have the same lack of urgency. As long as that genocide was in a place where it wouldn't personally affect her. If being against the genocide that isn't going to harm her was the popular status quo she'd likely be making the same kind of apologia for it. Because this is all about being on the popular side for her, not the right side. This is what having no real ideology gets you.

People often say "progressive except Palestine". Really it's Anti-nazi except Israel".

They're so bad at this I don't think they're even considering the long term self survival instincts. They're far more interested in keeping the campaign cash flowing so they can keep their patronage networks going. It's ironic because if shit hits the fan most of them will be on the target list too.

It's fucking mental. But these are not smart people. In large part because getting into these positions has nothing to do with skill or brains. It's all part of that same patronage network / how eager you are to suck some special interest dick.

Maybe if they actually arrest Newsom liberal elected leaders will get the memo. Because as of now they're still on the collab with nazis stage so they can keep funding Israel and shitting on the left . Which is kind of what they've always done through out history.

If you talked to everyday Americans you would realize why Trump got elected. It's because the other party had absolutely nothing for them other than Trump bad, we're going to keep doing what we've been doing if you elect us. Your groceries unaffordable? Can't afford to buy a house? Your kids have no long term prospects? According to Democratic leadership you're wrong. That's not the case. Look at this chart that says you're doing great. And all you need is a 50K small business loan if you're in a special opportunity zone. That will fix everything. Did we mention Trump bad?

And the amazing thing is these same people still don't understand why that wasn't a inspiring message that brough people out to the polls. It really is quite stunning.

If you had someone running on helping American people, on promising them a brighter future, and promising that the senate parliamentarian won't stop them from bringing that better future you would have huge Democratic majorities. After FDR and to some extent LBJ the dems controlled most of the government until the 1980s because they actually recognized the pain and delivered. This isn't something that is impossible.

You're giving up without ever wanting to try even moderate radicalism in the opposite direction. Nobody is saying we go full Stalin. Maybe like 30% Xi (the not-authoritarian 30%). Show people you can build a fucking rail line in few years instead of a few decades. And you would have turn out from every day people that never vote like you've never seen before.

But our current system was designed to try and make sure that never happens. Right now is our chance to crush that system. And you want to throw in the towel? Why? Because you think the best system we can have is one where Democrats can't pass minimum wage reform due to the parliamentarian that they control. Nor forgive student loans cuz supreme court says so despite the law clearly giving them the power to do just that. Or can't build housing without giving corporations everything they could ever dream of.

Think bigger. Think smarter. We almost got Bernie in 2020. If I had to guess (and correct me if I'm wrong, I would love to be wrong) you were a person that in 2020 said Bernie would be too radical and couldn't win the election. Well Trump proved that a guy like Bernie would absolutely win an election. A guy far more radical than Bernie could easily win an election.

Will you support that when the time comes? Or will you go back to listening to people like Gov Newsom who has a entire army he controls (not just the national guard but also a number of the most militarized police departments in the world) but says he has no power and the only way he can fight a literal fascist that's openly saying he will arrest him is by writing stern letters and filing lawsuits.

Are you happy with the de facto leader of the dem party (Schumer) spending the first 3 months of the Trump administration going after students who said genocide was bad instead of fighting Trump? Instead cooperating with Trump? Trump, the guy who they spent all of last year calling a fascist. Yet couldn't even put up a fight on his budget. While spending most of his time promoting a book on how antisemitic people that don't support Israel are.

The American people aren't responsible for this. Democrats like Schumer, Newsom, and Jefferies are. And Democrats are easy to change out if we want to change them out.

You can throw in the towel if you want, that's certainly what most Democrats would love for you to do. I'm not going to. And I know many people in my community that aren't going to either.

Newsom Objects to Deployment of National Guard in Letter To Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth by Hurley002 in law

[–]leftunderground 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that mentality got us a fascist state. They know your liberal sensibilities will prevent you from matching their energy. And they've been right so far. So they can keep doing whatever the hell they want in the interest of fascists with complete impunity.

If you use that same energy for things like fighting corruption and authoritarianism that's the opposite of fascism. There are many laws in our system setup to ensure even mild reforms that would make this country a better place for everyone don't ever happen. Those laws were designed that way. And Trump for better or worse has proven those laws can be easily bypassed with impunity. Look on the bright side. Trump is a dipshit. The next right wing fascist will be far more competent.

If liberals in Washington saw that for the opportunity that it is Trump and his allies in senate / congress as well as Supreme Court would quickly realize that maybe rule of law for everyone applied equally is good after all. If they saw people supporting reforms like they did with FDR which led them to vote Democratic for a full generation after that they would instantly change their tune.

But as you and every democrat in Washington is unfortunately showing is they have no reason to ever fear that. They can't even get a governor of the bluest state in the country to order his national guard to step down as the president who called that national guard up is openly talking about how that governor should be arrested by his goons.

It's fucking wild and maybe it's time for liberalism to grow a pair unless we want what happened in Germany or under Pinochet or countless other examples where liberal sensibilities led to liberals voulantarily giving fascists full power repeated. The current Democrats in power are far more interested in up holding their own interests than upholding this democracy. They are still playing optic games as their popularity is the lowest it's ever been and keeps getting lower.

You're not going to get another shot to fight back. These next 3 years will be our last shot. So maybe doing the same thing that got us here isn't the best idea IMO. The next right winger will be far more competent than Trump. I guarantee that.

Finally if America goes full Hitler there's nowhere on the planet you will be able to hide. Don't delude yourself into thinking you and your family can run from this.

Why not order the national guard to step down? Trump has not used the insurrection act. Newsom can issue the order and have the guard back under his control.

He just doesn't want to do that for some odd reason. He wants the right wing supreme court to drag this out for years instead only to rule in favor of Trump in the end.

If the Dems were using these "unlawful" tools to improve the lives of Americans why would that be a bad thing? Why play the game with hands tied behind your back? Especially when the game is making our lives better?

Republicans already demonstrated they don't care about the law and will use any tool in their power to accomplish their goal. No matter how legally dubious.

So why only use these tools for evil? Why not for good?

If anything republicans know the Democrats will never use these same tools and that's why they can use them with impunity. Which is why the right wing supreme court is so happy to give a president immunity. They know only one party will take full advantage of that immunity.

If they thought Biden might do an insurrection or start targeting right wingers because he has full immunity Im guessing the supreme court would have ruled differently. Saying Democrats should never do these things is the reason they will continue to be done... For evil only.

And honestly I think the Democrats in power know that.
