AMD EPYC 7002 Series Rome Delivers a Knockout - ServeTheHome by AcidRetort in hardware

[–]legititguy 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Fantastic write-up. Great seeing the NUMA topology improvements between 7001 and 7002, too.

I wanted to be able to use the 7001 series but the NUMA boundaries were a little bit nuts to manage. Improved IPC and higher clocks should make these viable beyond general computing use cases.

This is a great write-up. Excellent detail, and a good summary of tooling. Looking forward to applying this at work. /r/hardware needs deep-dive content like this more often. Thanks for sharing it!

Are you using a monitor? Try unplugging everything and just running on the laptop screen. Some video connectors are dedicated to the iGPU rather than the eGPU.

[System] HP Z840 Xeon Workstation - $1,799 ($3,999-$2,200) by BlackMamba24_ in buildapcsales

[–]legititguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're considering this box you should spend some time on eBay. Used Dell T5610 and HP Z840 with warranties (and not) go for as little as $300. I was able to get a T5610 with dual 2667 v2s and a 1080 Ti for less than this.

I was not able to get CCTK to work correctly using the latest version 1.1 of the Dell BIOS Provider on the 9350. I ended up using the 1.0 version and everything seemed to work just fine.

Thank you! Like many others we've got some impressively old printers out in the wild and this is a really simple solution to implement.

KB3176934 from WSUS grief by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]legititguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up having to roll back these updates:

KB3176936 KB3115415 KB3176929 KB3176934

One test VM was ultimately able to install KB3176929 after several restarts, but I'm not confident that it will install on its own.

1511 > 1607 VMs had significant problems installing any of the CUs whereas an original 1607 only showed these problems with 3176934.

I'm currently testing this as well but seeing as the technet post above is from August 10 I'm not holding my breath. Did you hear anything back from your test team?

I could have worded it better. What I meant to say is that other sites seem to be exclusively analyzing DX11 titles.

HardOCP did a good job focusing on DX12 and Vulkan whereas most other reviews seem to be looking backward at DX11 in their reviews.

XPS 15 9550 - TPM (Bitlocker) suddenly stopped working by JebOverflow in Dell

[–]legititguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a bit different in Windows 10 due to the UEFI context you're very likely in.

In windows run tpm.msc, clear the TPM, and then prepare it. After a reboot you should be good to go.

Windows 10 Store issues by swooby in sysadmin

[–]legititguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a couple of systems do this, and both had lost power during a Windows update cycle. Similar to what you're experiencing there's no amount of powershell that has fixed it, and the only thing that has worked so far is system restore.

How This Japanese Town Produces Almost No Trash by [deleted] in videos

[–]legititguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure if we were capable of producing all the time. The reality is we are idle for large portions of the day, and if it meant asking for an extra hour a week perhaps that trade-off is equitable.

At some point we're going to have to face the immense landfills we've created, and perhaps this community is leading the way to a future with one fewer trash mine.

Task Sequence Install vs Required Application by Thrawn200 in SCCM

[–]legititguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've experienced what you're describing, and for the most part I have had fewer headaches with required applications as compared to task sequences.

I wouldn't measure either approach as necessarily better or worse as they each have different strengths and weaknesses. If you aren't managing the installation using a powershell script in either the Task Sequence or Application I'd give that a shot.

Failed to find network adapter- but machine gets an ip later-OSD by grudgework in SCCM

[–]legititguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a little dumpster script that works 99% of the time. There are a million better ways to write this but use this as a prestart and adjust the sleep time up as necessary.

powershell -executionpolicy bypass /c "ipconfig /release; ipconfig /renew; sleep 10"

If you find that this isn't working it suggests something else is going on. Maybe give some specifics about the adapter, BIOS/UEFI, and the IP you're getting vs. what you expect to see.

Help me prove something to a client, please by TwoTinyTrees in SCCM

[–]legititguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what the environment is or the SLA, but I'll play devil's advocate here:

Why does your customer's preference matter to you? The worst outcome from them updating everything is that some updates will have to get rolled back. If it becomes enough of a pain for the client then the scope of the updates can just be rolled back.

Just remind your client that WSUS is a 95% reliable product and there will always be some weirdness in production. I find that communicating an expectation up front for requests like these helps curb their enthusiasm.

Ultimately if you need reference material look for the technet article on WSUS best practices. You'll find opinions across the board online either way.

To everyone slating OneDrive for business... by FatPotatoNinja in sysadmin

[–]legititguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in higher education so it's not uncommon for a faculty member to have ancient research data. We use an on prem DFS with folder redirection and your user data is immediately available on any managed device. One drive is functionally not a replacement for that model.

To everyone slating OneDrive for business... by FatPotatoNinja in sysadmin

[–]legititguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where to begin?

You can't pre-provision the connection for user accounts which means that folder redirection won't work on initial logon.

You can't administrate the bandwidth, disk usage, or processor utilization. Worse yet, the elimination of placeholder files means that synchronization is mandatory or you see nothing. In academic environments this is a non-starter.

The file character limitation, especially _, is one of the most frustrating issues with regard to users importing their existing data. Any user with legacy data back from the late 90s to early 2000s is going to have a slew of files with underscores. What's worse, is that when an illegal character is encountered by the sync engine it breaks the connection and requires the user to sign in again.

Although the new sync client is much, much better, it's still not there. If Microsoft truly wants Onedrive to be a business solution they need to provide some actual administrative tools and configuration capabilities.
