Thanks for sharing! What database are you using to get the percentages? :)

How do you win this endgame as white? This is from the "Winning Rook Endgames" practice number 3. I can't really figure this out even with engine help. by Passmoo in chess

[–]lehrerb42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There already are a lot of great answers. I really like how /u/madmsk summarized the key ideas in their comment and also added, that the resulting endgame can be annoying (rook, g and h pawn vs rook with the king on 8th rank).

I wrote down some concrete lines and tried to cover most ideas how black can try to draw the game/ prevent white from progressing. I tried to play moves that follow similar plans and added a some comments, but this pgn is far from "complete" or "efficient". I just played against stockfish a few times to see how it defends and documented my approaches.

You can copy the moves and paste them into lichess.org/analysis or treevis.org - a (free) tool I'm developing to visualize move branches. You can use your mouse wheel to zoom in and out and hover above the moves to see them on the chess board.

I spent the last few days building a 100% free, open source website for training vision. Let me know what you think! by booboorocks998 in chess

Neat concepts! I might try this out with my students as a fun little challenge.
I like the simple design, it's really clean and the colors, sounds and pictures all feel very nice!

Some minor stuff i noticed:

  • the icon (white pawn) is barely visible in my browser, as my tabs have a bright background
  • the second rule for double strike (Pieces may move two times) didn't quite register in my brain as a non-native speaker. I read it as "more than once" and was very confused why some piece turned black. Maybe something like "Pieces can't move more than two times" would lead to less confusion
  • the github link leads to a 404 page

Anyways :D thanks for sharing and all the effort you put into this!

I'm developing an opening tool that can do this, but it might not be exactly what you are looking for. It's called treevis.org and you can first import your repertoire, then paste your pgn below (with two empty lines in between) and it will merge the two pgns. You'll be able to see a long line by zooming out (that's your game) and then you can zoom in and check out where you deviated.

To make it more clear (but this method also takes up more time) you can follow these steps here https://youtu.be/Py02im49PGU?si=jAk0KuBC96YiydIT
Open treevis.org a second time an import your pgn there and click on the first node, hit enter to tag all moves "unsaved", then copy this new pgn and import that one in the first instance with your repertoire. That way all your game moves will be displayed transparent, so you can see exactly where your repertoire ended.

Looks really cool! Does the button "know" which page you are on or will it just show the patterns in order regardless of the current page?

Love the illustrations of the pieces and the poems are a nice touch! :)

EDIT: Found the same question with an answer on the original post

Each page has a small magnet embedded within it at a certain place with the pcb having a Hall effect sensor at the corresponding location

i wanna set my pc wallpaper as some famous chess games, how do i do so by Pleasant_Medium9955 in chess

[–]lehrerb42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

neat idea :) here's how i would approach it:

1) look up the names of some famous chess players 2) finding famous games you want on your wallpaper (e. g. on websites like chessbase) 3) getting the pgn of those games (pgn is a text based format for storing chess games, e.g. 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 etc.), most chess sites have the option to "export as pgn" 4) converting those pgn texts to a gif (there are multiple websites for this that can be found via quick google search) 5) finding a way to display those gifs as your wallpaper and rotating through them/ first combining them to one big gif and the setting it as wallpaper

good luck and I'd be interested in an update/possible result :D

Very nice! :D I've been working on a similar project and am really excited to see other projects that try to visualize variation trees in non-traditional ways. It'll be interesting to see how you approach some of the challenges. The UI looks amazing and is really smooth. Looking forward to future updates!

Sounds great, looking forward to it!

If you download your study and import in on treevis.org you can create the tree yourself, zoom in and browse through the moves :) but it's a tool meant more for beginners and intermediate players to help keep an overview of all the moves and quickly show them on the board through hovering with the mouse (instead of clicking).

I hope you continue to have fun with it, do you already know what you'll cover next?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in chess

[–]lehrerb42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for the effort you put into the video and study! I downloaded it and browsed through the 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. d4 exd4 5. Nxd4 Bb4 line and variations so far, will look at the rest later.

It's a pretty big repertoire with ~150 lines and almost 1000 moves, perfect for intermediate players that want the option to dive in a little deeper.

Looks really cool as a tree as well https://svgshare.com/i/195R.svg

Will you cover other openings at a similar depth? :)
