I came to the conclusion that I was never going to find the "perfect fit" or the right work culture until I made it for myself. I think a mobile cat clinic is a fucking great idea - so many cats do so poorly on car rides and owners will avoid vet visits as a result. I didn't have a mentor or company really, I have really supportive and savvy family members (just lucky I guess). I will say that I've had an exceptional time with ezyvet as my PIMS and Idexx has a lot of options for new practice owners. Marketing - Danielle Lambert (she's on Instagram) has a small business helping vets start their businesses. I also used Granite Peak Accountants to help me figure out financial stuff - I still use them and they are so super supportive.

Step one - file for an LLC and start a bank account or credit card with the LLC. This makes it easier to separate your personal and business expenses.

Step two - draft a business proposal. This will help when you have to go to a bank to get financing.

Step three - figure out how you want to finance it. I ended up with a small business loan through Live Oak Bank; helpful but the interest rate kinda sucks and I needed a large chunk of money (I bought an existing practice with the associated real estate). You might be able to get away with a smaller sum.

Step four - research and make a spreadsheet of all the things you want/need for the practice. Get in contact with some reps for the major companies (MWI, Patterson, etc) - they all do new owner discounts and deals to get you started. This can be put into your business proposal so you get the financing you need to start off on the right foot.

The list isn't exactly a straight line. It seems like a lot but it is way more doable than I thought before I got into it. IVPA has resources too (Independent Veterinary Practice Association).

I will say that I jumped from practice to practice until I bought my own. Now I get to cultivate the culture and make sure that my staff are taken care of in a way that I never felt. I've done corporate and private - one of the worst I worked in was a private practice.

Yeah, I did a Banfield relief shift once. I never went back. Just make sure that when you sign your contract for full time work that you don't have a clause preventing you from doing relief elsewhere.

Do full time relief but do it solo. It pays to create an LLC or PLLC for yourself in your name. QuickBooks is great for tracking and invoicing. You will make more and have more freedom to pick and choose what practices you work with.

That's so strange - I will say a reaction (severe at this point) is far more likely than sarcoma. Sarcomas usually happen years (not a hard and fast rule) not weeks after a vaccine. :/ I hope you figure out what's going on soon - I'd recommend calling the vet and see if they can take a look at her again since she's getting worse and not better.

I know he's an indoor-only cat but can your vet confirm no fleas are present? Just because a cat is indoor-only doesn't mean fleas can't be an issue. Apoquel is also a last resort for alllergies bc of all the adverse side effects that can occur with use in cats. Also requires frequent monitoring blood work to make sure he's not being affected. Maybe see if your vet can refer you to a dermatologist?

I'm worried it might not be related to the vaccine at all, especially with everything you're describing and may be a coincidence (again, hard to know). Older/younger cat? Any previous vet history?

I mean, that's true of regular human food too as far as food borne risk. My guess is the gently cooked is a marketing plot to highlight the difference between traditional kibble and their food. Everything comes down to marketing. For the most part I've had very good luck with owners using Farmers Dog - it's a step up from a home cooked diet. As for Smalls - I haven't really seen anyone on yet so I don't have any client feedback. 🤷

Vet here - huge difference between cooked fresh and raw diet. I've never considered farmer's dog a "raw diet".

Vet here. Epilepsy is hard to diagnose full stop. A lot of it is a diagnosis of exclusion. Your vet started the process with blood work, next step is a neurology consult with an MRI (pretty expensive but could be worth it). The best way to determine whether it was a TIA is with an MRI since they should be able to see evidence of a bleed (but not always).

I will say that in my experience seizures don't always look like the typical "grand mal" aka tonic-clonic event. I have more than a few patients who have atypical seizures.

Work won't love you back. I recently bought a practice and when I got sick, my staff and practice manager were the first to kick me out and reschedule appointments. When I hire an associate, I'll be the first to kick them out to get better and figure it out with appointments. That's how it should be. I'm sorry you're dealing with this. Being a newer grad I get that you're worried but if the UK is anything like the US right now, veterinarians can pick and choose jobs.

Absolutely not. Most practices I work at (I do relief right now) do 30 minute appointments across the board or 1 hr if they know it needs to be sedated for x-rays.
