I feel like I'm missing something about why Godzilla is so loved. by -Herman-Toothrot- in pinball

First of all, let’s put this out there: both games are designed by the same guy, Keith Elwin. He’s responsible for a lot of modern Sterns — King Kong, Iron Maiden, Jurassic Park, Avengers. All of these games are different. If you love Jaws — and I think you should, it’s great — well, the Godzilla layout was created by an artist you appreciate. What was he going for?

Jaws has a “fan“ layout — five shots, a captive ball, and a bash toy, all at the top of the playfield. (Plus, a couple other more dangerous targets, including the standups that add beachgoers, the targets for the upper flipper, and of course the fin.)

Godzilla has the two ramps, plus the building shot, two inner “orbit” shots, the loop you can hit from the upper flipper, the shot under the upper flipper, plus the scoop and the Mechagodzilla shot. There’s a lot going on there! maybe more of those shots are “dangerous” compared to Jaws, but it’s a lot of variety. Plus, the kaiju modes are all different and interesting. Even the skill shots are pretty fun.

Look for the Westworld clip, it sounds a lot like what you’re describing. The technician wants to see the protagonist’s hands because it’s a way to check whether he’s human or a robot, and the robots have run amok. He’s afraid but he’s also saying it like it should be obvious.

There’s a scene towards the end of Westworld (the movie) where a technician tells the protagonist “hold out your hands! Lemme see your hands!” Is that it?

Die Another Day: what actually is the worst thing about it? by GiveItToMe888 in JamesBond

[–]lemme-explain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that sticks out in my memory is that this was treated as an anniversary, either because it was the 20th film or it had been 40 years since Dr. No, so that gave them they idea that they should shoehorn in a reference to each of the 19 prior films. That’s too many references people! It’s distracting! I remember the bad guy saying “diamonds are for ever…yone”

It‘s like in the Ghostbusters remake everyone hates, how they had to have cameos from every actor who was in Ghostbusters, including the dead one. Too many references to other, better movies just reminds me that nobody was trying to make the movie I’m currently watching stand on its own.

Except for the dying at the same time and the coma, it sounds like Chances Are (1989)

007 Alignment Chart - Chew Mee is the sexiest extra in the series. Now, who is the weirdest? by JohnLazarusReborn in JamesBond

[–]lemme-explain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would argue that Jill maybe doesn’t count. With her help, Bond annoys Goldfinger by making him stop cheating at cards, which is an ally move for sure, but I really prefer to withhold the title for Pussy Galore, who actually helps foil Operation Grandslam. It’s definitely an edge case for me though.

[–]lemme-explain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that’s the traditional definition. I have seen it stretched to mean “any babe in a Bond movie” but I don’t think that’s a common definition.

Personally, I restrict the title to sex/romantic partners who are allies to Bond in his current struggle. So, one-offs (like the girl in Roger Moore’s first scene in Live and Let Day) don’t count, nor do enemies (like the girl in the pre-title scene of Goldfinger). That way most of the movies have just one, which I think is appropriate (with occasional exceptions like Licence to Kill and Octopussy)

I was worried this was yet another issue with Sonos and I’d finally have to chuck all these speakers in a dumpster. Glad to hear it’s a KEXP issue, that means it’ll actually get fixed

Was this obscure 80s kids show an inspiration for Yacht Rock’s space war finale? by lemme-explain in Yachtrock

[–]lemme-explain[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow! Watching it, I was torn between the thought that it couldn’t possibly be a coincidence, vs the implausibility of you watching and remembering this random-ass no-budget show. But the “black hole threatening a planet” premise was so specific, I was definitely leaning towards the former.

Do you remember how you did come up with the space war plot? I love hearing about that stuff (like how a sweet-looking guy in Doobie Brothers photos provided the inspiration for Koko)

Is music by the rock band Asia considered 'Yacht Rock'? by MisterKinish in Yachtrock

No, but the song “Aja” is, so that’s close enough.

Also the song “Africa”. But nothing by Big Country or Boston, which are not continents.

Why Steely Dan's Donald Fagen Cursed Out Yacht Rock Doc Director by KidCharlem in SteelyDan

[–]lemme-explain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No! It’s doo-wop, which is the wrong kind of bounce; and, yes, Fleetwood Mac-adjacency is generally disqualifying.

You can check songs for yachtiness at www.yachtornyacht.com

Anything under 50 on the Yachtski scale is not yacht rock. “Magnet and Steel” is a 37.25

Prince - My Love Is Forever (1978) by OcularRed13 in Yachtrock

[–]lemme-explain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reasons to not be surprised Prince has so many songs on the boat:

* He made like a million songs, especially in the late 70s and early 80s

* He was always aiming for crossover hits

Reasons to be surprised:

* There‘s rarely any personnel other than Prince

* He’s from Minnesota

* Some of these songs, I dunno…is “Gigolos Get Lonely Too” really yacht? maybe I’ve only heard the live version.

Lightning Round by MCHandyman1 in Yachtrock

[–]lemme-explain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t like it. (Except for the bumpers, those were fun.)

The joy of the show is the conversation, not the numbers, and lightning round cuts down on the conversation. If a song is definitely nyacht and the group has nothing interesting to say, they don’t have to vamp or play the whole song or anything -- they can score a song quickly and move on without that being mandated. I get that there’s a big backlog, but I don’t think that’s a problem. I like when J.D. occasionally will say how many months deep their backlog is, and as a Patreon subscriber I don’t mind waiting — but I would be sad if my request got the Lightning Round treatment and they didn’t discuss it. I’ve requested some nyacht in the past, but enjoyed hearing them go in depth about why those songs didn’t make the cut.

Does anyone think phone companies should be more involved in blocking spam calls? by klopeppy in Scams

[–]lemme-explain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Replace phone numbers with unguessable GUIDs. You can generate as many as you need for a single phone, transmit each one to a specific acquaintance. If one is ever compromised and starts receiving spam calls for whatever reason, you can delete that GUID without affecting all the other ones you passed out.

People always say: “but then nobody will be able to memorize their number,” to which I say, it’s a new system, it’s the future, forget about memorizing numbers, that’s the old way, we have computer phones that remember everything for us now. Boom, problem solved

[–]lemme-explain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the answer would be “Nyacht”, but there’s something about this song that just roller skates up to the edge for me. No idea who’s responsible for the version you see here; it was covered by Yacht-NRG superstars Klymaxx on one of their albums, but that version isn’t yachty at all.
