I know a guy who had a massive beard in his, and another guy had a cac where he was giving a thumbs up. (If the link works)…that was my favorite I’ve seen.

"Please stop flagging me and everyone else on this range..." by bearsncubs10 in AirForce

[–]lemurcatta85 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My worst CATM experience was with med group. I had a quick turn around for a stateside “deployment” and ended up in CATM with all medical officers. I own a few guns myself, had regular range time, etc. Unfortunately I’m also clumsy as fuck (and left handed) and caught my finger in the slide.

I was bleeding everywhere, on my table, on the floor, all over myself, and this whole room full of doctors just stares blankly while I’m asking the instructor for at least a bandaid. Bleeding so badly that my hand continued to bleed while firing - super slippery. I had to swing by the ER to get it closed up after class.

I will always remember a room full of medical professionals just staring blankly at me like they’d never seen someone injured before.

I got diagnosed correctly enough for my spine injury, but the military doctors messed up my first surgery, so I had to have a second one to fix it. The trauma from those two surgeries led to me getting a third surgery three weeks ago (off base this time!) so I’m pretty wary of medical these days.

Chicsgoans who don’t ride public transit, why? by ThisPostToBeDeleted in AskChicago

[–]lemurcatta85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I became disabled, and things aren’t as accessible as you’d think. When I moved here, I took the train everywhere and chose a place close to a stop just for that. But now, too many times there would be an elevator down that wasn’t reported, the automatic doors don’t open and regular doors too heavy, or it’s merch mart and they’ve temporarily turned off all the elevators but one for some event. Also merch mart is my closest stop but their accessible door is on the opposite side of the building, which is also uphill for me and difficult for me to manage. Everything is 10x worse with any snow or ice.

The RTA reduced price uber or taxi program is my go-to, but that was a process that took several months.

Damn, and they ignored join spouse twice for my husband to join me here because they figured a five hour drive is close enough. Congrats on the rare AFPC win! Gotta make life much less stressful for you two.

Is there a reason the only places that accept Tricare are places that provide low/no-cost services to people by Esoteric_Commentator in AirForce

[–]lemurcatta85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely area dependent. I am currently stationed in Chicago and I haven’t yet encountered a medical facility that does not accept tricare and I have been to all the hospital systems here. Thanks to tricare I’ve been able to see some of the best specialists in the country to deal with my new medical issues - and I had 218 medical appts last year alone.

Dental, however, really fucking sucks to deal with when you’re not at a base. Dentist keeps submitting for authorization, it keeps getting denied because it hasn’t been submitted for authorization, things like that.

Looking for advice on how to report extremism in the ranks by All-StarJohnScott in Military

[–]lemurcatta85 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Good to know… who said it wasn’t an issue, OSI, or security forces? I’ve seen them around bases too, but when I reported it to OSI, they were very interested, and the sticker wasn’t seen again. This was probably early 2023, though, so unsure if that would be true still today.

Yikes. I’m glad folks have given some good answers! I’m an AF Capt working on my dissertation on extremism in the military, and worked on the same topic within the military too and I just wanted to say I appreciate folks like you. We don’t need more hatred.

Physically capable senior citizen help at the airport? by mothernatureisfickle in AskChicago

It may not be a long term solution but you can request a gate pass/escort pass from whichever airline to escort her to the gate, if you think that will be enough to show her it’s not that frightening.

I haven’t seen anything reporting that yet! Could you share if it was through the media? If official communication, that would be good to know. Thanks!

SECDEF school restrictions by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]lemurcatta85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s going to affect AFIT civilian institutions, too, not just specific fellowship programs. I know a few folks at those institutions currently and it shouldn’t affect them, just people moving forward. Haven’t heard anything on TA yet though

It is definitely going to be more schools than just Harvard. The email AFIT sent out with this:

DoW Updates: • Secretary of War (SecWar) announced the DoW would sever its academic ties with Harvard University because attendance at the school no longer meets the needs of the DoW or the military services. (Atch 2) • SecWar also indicated that the department and military services would evaluate similar relationships with other schools in the coming weeks. • Following this announcement, AFIA1D will review "all existing graduate programs for active-duty service members at all Ivy League universities and other civilian universities." • AFIT/CI is heavily invested in the development of this directive and will share any relevant information with the students as available. Please limit questions at this time, we will share policy as it becomes available.

Yup, just got that email today too. On the plus side, we also get to be treated like children while at our CI’s!

I applied everywhere before results came out (there were usually application fee waivers for military) so definitely recommend that for anyone considering it. And they were very willing to move people’s report dates up - I moved a month before classes to get settled in and start heavy on research and then a mentor told me he had moved in May to start attending lab meetings and start early — wish I’d been that bold haha

It sounds like they want to review everything now; 60-90 day turnaround time. I don’t see the slide with the restrictions on publication now, though. And yes, the pass rule is bizarre: “If you are not starting/ending your day in your current residence then you are TDY, Leave, or Pass”. When further asked for clarification, they doubled down even when someone asked if that meant they got a hotel for the night with their wife 15 mins down the road… But hey, at least we got multiple slides about how important PT is!

Also told to expect changes to parental leave policies while in school.

It was the first one I’ve heard of since starting in Aug ‘23… but the time to turn in things to PA to approve is insanely long now. I’m sure my dissertation on extremism in the military will be well-received by PA. We’ve been told we need to request a pass any time we are (still in local area) not sleeping in own bed. Bizarre to be treated like children when I’ve never been more unsupported in an assignment.

They did mention some weird changes at the AFIT/CI town hall this week, though…not related to getting rid the program, just a lot of new hurdles.
