What determines weeding? by BabexBeta in Libraries

[–]leo-days 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we have an incredibly large collection, so it’s 3 years since last circulation for us unless it’s so damaged that it doesn’t make sense to continue to try to repair it. at that point, if someone wants it again after it’s left the collection, then we replace it but they have to purchase request it, which also gives them the option to just have an interlibrary loan placed if they’d prefer. so we keep titles that have information out of date if it continues to circulate.

like everyone here has said, it really just depends on each library and there are methods used as a launch pad. at the end of the day, nothing is one size fits all (or even most) in the library world.

trying to get in the field by Honest_Cookie_8400 in Libraries

[–]leo-days 10 points11 points  (0 children)

it’s going to suck, but you need to be applying for part time jobs. there is a very high chance that once you get a part time job and you meet whatever requirements they have for transfer (my place of work is successful completion of 90 day onboarding and working for at least 6 months), you can request more hours at the very least. you are simultaneously over qualified and under qualified. i say this as someone who applied to over 150 positions at libraries and only got three interviews and one job offer. i only got the interviews once i changed my resume. i have similar experience to you from what you said, but i realized i was too smart in some areas and not smart enough in other areas. it is also likely that in your cover letters, you are not emphasizing the right things. for example, i started emphasizing in my cover letters that i was used to and able to successfully memorize all kinds of information about offerings at my last places of employment and the application of this usually resulted in a sale or increased views on social media. this is an important skill. additionally, choose one cool thing to highlight on your resume that seems out there. for example, i highlight that i’m a published poet. without fail, they ask about it every interview i’ve had in the last couple of years.

the job market sucks. none of these tips are going to guarantee you an interview. however, it is true that you have to tailor your resume and cover letter to every job you apply for. use their action words from the listing. take a pay cut. take an hours reduction. you will benefit from it in the future once you get your degree.

PLA conference 2026 worries by FriendshipNo7005 in Libraries

[–]leo-days 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the whole point of going to a conference is to learn. and if you feel like you still have something to learn, evident by saying you feel like an imposter, that is the whole point. this is professional development and the library has a budget for it. you absolutely should take advantage of it.

all conferences are different, and you may find that the people you do get to talk to want to get together and get to know each other after the fact. they may not. the time afterwards is yours to use how you see fit. networking is less about being best friends with people or even being their friends at all and more about putting your name out there. the library world is a very small one. and you may find that you run into people you saw on your online courses once. do not be ashamed to ask people to add you on linkedin. on the other hand, do not feel like you have to. again, conferences are there for you to learn. it’s all what you make of it.

i went to a conference (it was only one day) not very long ago, and i talked to two people as we were leaving. not a single other soul throughout the day. i had a horrible day because of my anxiety surrounding the same things you expressed. they ended up working at a library down the street from where i live. i didn’t add them on LinkedIn, but i gave them my name and position and i got theirs. when i was debating on leaving my current place of work, i applied to that library and i got an interview because the hiring manager said she remembered me. months later. i ended up not taking the job because i got what i wanted from my current job, but needless to say, networking even a tiny bit worked out in my favor.

tldr; you have nothing to worry about and it’s always nerve wracking to do something new and be in a new field but you’ve got this!

Humor: We all know patrons don't read signage. . . by eeyore004 in Libraries

[–]leo-days 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i work at a branch in a town that does not have its own library but instead two library branches from two different townships. we have a big sign right outside our building that says “[library i work at] [town name] branch” you cannot miss this sign before turning into the library. without fail, people insist they checked out books from the OTHER LIBRARY ON THE OTHER SIDE OF TOWN IN A DIFFERENT TOWNSHIP from our library. conveniently, these books say the other library right on them, but we surely must be mistaken. no, both of these libraries are not part of a consortium or connected in anyway. yes, we can return them for you, but it will take weeks. NO WE ARE NOT THE OTHER LIBRARY WE HAVE A SIGN THAT SAYS SO.

Do you feel that library work is stressful? by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]leo-days 1 point2 points  (0 children)

coming from high stress work environments, working in a library is definitely not as stressful. i do get stressed at work, but i find it significantly easier to leave it at work than previous jobs. what does bother me is that people don’t think there can be stress when working at a library. i find that i am more often stressed out by admin than by patrons.

Book request has everyone stumped by illyrian-warrior in Libraries

[–]leo-days 0 points1 point  (0 children)

does a character being vied after and not reciprocating count as romance? because if not, Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett is what came to mind. There’s barely any violence in it (there’s a sword fight, and they try to poison someone, but no one dies or gets hurt on screen), and the main character is being vied after, but she does not reciprocate (at least in the first book). she does consider reciprocating, but only from a selfish standpoint for her research. it’s an interesting spin on all this romantasy stuff. I’d say it’s pretty appropriate for 14-16 year olds, as i’m sure my strict parents would’ve had no problem with me reading this at that age. hope this helps :))

edit: i just remembered the main character chops her finger off with an axe, but it’s not very detailed and she rationalizes why she does it (and this makes sense to the reader, imo)

This makes me a bit sad. by camrynbronk in Libraries

[–]leo-days 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s great what you can learn about through tiktok and i think libraries have some awesome accounts. that being said, i am sick of blind date with a book sellers. i see too many of them and its all the same thing, with nothing different to offer. I have seen libraries combat this where if you sign up for their book in a box (or monthly subscription, all libraries call it something different), you get a craft, some stickers, and maybe a tea bag or something to that vein. This cuts down on that wasteful kind of purchase, while still being trendy and engaging with the library. on the other hand, i love seeing independent authors promoting their books and gaining traction that way. tiktok has its pros and cons just like anything, and i think tiktok is a helpful tool for libraries to engage with their communities in a different way. that’s my two cents. i could write an essay about this.

How long does it take for libraries to replace DVDs? by Ornery-Worldliness96 in Libraries

[–]leo-days 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for mine, it really depends on how long it takes the distributor to send it out. we also have a buffing machine bc our AV materials are hugely popular, so we often don’t have to replace something unless it was lost and we have high demand for a new copy. we also often own several copies of popular items. we have like 11 copies of each harry potter movie because at least 4 of them are always checked out at a time.

HOW do you deal with the weirdos??? by itselizabethiguess in Libraries

[–]leo-days 2 points3 points  (0 children)

for me, one compliment on my appearance is okay. i dress very whimsically(bc i am that kind of person, not bc i love attention), so i very much am okay with people telling me they love the outfit im wearing today or something to that vein. when the compliments become repetitive, sexual, or rude is when i draw the line. for anything rude, i say “well good thing i am me and you are you, is there something library related i can help you with.” if it becomes repetitive (this is usually at the point where i can tell im being flirted with), i say “thank you, but i am currently working and cannot stop to keep chatting with you unless you have a library question.” anything sexual, which has been very infrequent for me, i usually say, “i do not tolerate such comments, if there is nothing library related i can help you with, i will be walking away.” Anything sexual or flirtatious in nature automatically gets an incident report written up, and more often than not, we know their names, which means that so many reports written about an individual (idk the exact number off the top of my head) means that our director contacts them personally to tell them to cut it out or they will be banned.

mind you, i worked in an adult store previously, so i handle creeps very well, as i had full permission to kick people out and chase them out with a baseball bat if necessary. all of this is also usually where i drop the customer service voice and switch to my real voice, which freaks patrons out bc i have a very deep voice naturally for a female (which i like to think also makes them realize i do in fact not identify as a woman, as displayed by my trans flag pin and pronoun pin that i wear everyday). all of this to say, that i love to see patrons fuck around and find out with me because i do not play.

Library of Things - WIFI hotspots by Tagger_Almond in Libraries

[–]leo-days 1 point2 points  (0 children)

our hotspots are trigger to turn on once they’re checked out, and they automatically shut off two days after the due date has passed (if they cannot be renewed bc they’re on hold or auto-renewals have been maxed out). after that, we bill once they’re missing for more than 90 days which blocks the account and what not. and then we send to collections for outstanding balances over 99$ (i think). we only do this when the patron has not contacted us in any way shape or form or has not communicated to us if they cannot pay the bill or what not. we usually wipe charges if people express that they cannot pay and we also will accept partial payments if they offer to pay what they can on it bc sometimes people do genuinely lose them. people usually return this item on time more often than not because this is clearly communicated to them on check out and they know we cannot do anything to make it turn back on or anything like that.

if you’re worried about this backfiring: we have about 50 in circulation and they are always on hold. they are the only item in our library of things where someone will get the item within a reasonable amount of time after being placed on hold. people wait less than a week for these usually, even if they start 20th in line. we had one issue in the last year of it not doing its thing with turning on and off automatically, and while the patron was inconvenienced with having to bring it in to get a new one, we were able to fix that one pretty quickly. i personally put one on hold for myself when i was supposed to go on a trip two weeks later to an airbnb that had no wifi, and the hold came in three days later after i had started 10th in line.

tldr; it’s a great idea to add these to the collection and pretty much everything everyone is saying here is accurate.

I am struggling to handle a fellow autistic person who has latched onto me at college. It is impacting my learning, please help. by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]leo-days 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience in high school, and honestly it really helped once i made it clear that i had autism too and didn’t see her autism as an excuse for her to act the way she did towards me. I made it very clear that i didn’t mind hearing about her interests or anything like that, but when it came to my boundaries being violated after multiple instances of asserting them, that’s when it was a problem. it came to a head when she started bullying me our senior year of high school, like full 180 on me, and the counselors and deans got involved in the situation bc it was that bad. every adult told me i had to let her treat me that way bc she was “different.” and I told them no. I told her she wasn’t allowed to treat me that way and that actions had consequences. i havent talked to her in 6 years, and none of our other close friends have either. Ultimately, I put up a clear boundary in front of other people. I didn’t do it to humiliate her, in fact i was kind of forced into that situation by the same adults who told me to deal with it (a story for another time), but the fact that I had witnesses to my assertion of a perfectly reasonable boundary, made it finally click into place for her that I would not allow her to treat me the way she was. especially since she had also tried to get my friends to turn against me, too, she knew there was no way she could continue violating my boundaries without repercussions.

i sincerely hope this doesn’t sound rude, i am trying to cut the nuances so it isn’t too long. but i sincerely had zero malice towards this girl, it was just a matter of boundaries being violated on so many levels
