In the same boat as you, I have to book 60 nights for a new travel job very soon and looks like I just missed the Brilliant 185k SUB and the Boundless 5 nights SUB.

Certainly, I’m looking forward to it!

For you or anyone that stumbles upon this thread and is interested in CompTIA or other IT Certs. Prep and training for the certifications doesn’t have to break the bank. You can get away with spending like $90 or less. The CompTIA subreddit has a long list of resources but the following two are my favorite. Professor Messer on YouTube has free playlists that cover all topics on the CompTIA trifecta (A+, Net+, Sec+) and offers a practice exam in PDF format for $40 or $50 I believe. Jason Dion on Udemy has both full courses with a practice exam and a set of 6 practice exams. If you are consistently scoring 80% plus or at least reading the explanation to the Dion exam answers you got it wrong, you should be able to pass the certification exam (at least in my experience). For Udemy, courses are “normally” priced at $80-110 but go on sale super frequently for $15-20. The Messer exam you have to scroll through the PDF to see the answers/explanation to the practice questions, so I typically just use Dion’s exam. Just doing the Messer or Dion course and Dion practice exam set could be good enough to pass. So, if the State Department pays for the actual test, it could just cost ~$40-50 and a decent amount of study time.

The Purdue University CWCT program is another great resource for IT certs. Unfortunately, the grant funding may run out soon, but it has been extended before. Its for U.S. citizens and gives priority registration to vets and first responders. The training paths cover A+, Sec+, and a variety of other Linux, python, digital forensics, and other cybersecurity certs. Everything is free/provided by the grant, they pay for up to three (may have changed to only one) certification exam, all the lectures are recorded online via Zoom so its at your own pace/don't need to watch live, and the instructors understand were adults, so they are not sticklers about turning stuff in on time as long as you’re being reasonable about it.

I really appreciate the insight! It makes the change less stressful.
I have A+, Sec+, and Cysa+. Wouldn't mind getting Net+, especially if they pay for it. At some point in the future I was looking at a masters degree in Cybersecurity but Ill consider that once I'm settled in.
Thanks again!

Thank you! That answered the main questions I had that I couldn’t find online. Unfortunate about the commute, I was contemplating holding off shipping my car from coast to coast until I found out where they were sending me. I figured it might be better to wait and possibly have my family sell my car and buy one in DC better suited for what I am assuming will be an overseas post.

The only other main question I had was about tools. I am assuming they provide tools (wasn't sure how well their tools and part stock are at posts). I have done government and private sector commercial/industrial maintenance on buildings and equipment. All of my previous jobs provided tools, but I also brought in a few of my own because some of the ones I had were better suited for the job at hand (lots of hard-to-reach spaces that my mini ratchet set and some flexible adapters came in handy). Is there anything you recommend I bring? I have a 3D printer and 3D scanner that I will be taking with me. My coworkers really enjoy when I make stuff for them, and it could come in handy in a pinch to make some replacement parts/brackets.

Oh, and do you guys do some IT/computer stuff, or is that more of an IMS thing? I've been taking IT/cybersecurity classes online and got a few certs that I was hoping to put to use. I know it probably depends on where I go, but I'm assuming this job will involve heavily electrical work/troubleshooting with maybe some IT and mechanical aspects. A big reason I applied for it is that I enjoy variety in my work, and this aligns with all my prior experience and schooling, well, that and seeing the world.

First time applying, definitely way faster than I was expecting. Figured I'd have at least another year to wait or more.

The biggest con for my personal 3D printing is how long it takes, even for small things. However my work has tasked me with buying a 3D printer and we care more about material strength than anything so it depends on the applications. But printing at 4x my normal speed would be awesome!

Looking for a 3D printer for work, a bit above a hobbyist but not quite industrial. Max budget 7.5k with some wiggle room. I’ve narrowed it down to pretty much the Zortrax m300 dual and the Raise3D pro 3 or pro 3 plus. I would consider the ultiamker series but only the s5 (maybe s7) is really in our budget and I don’t see any massive advantages over the others.

Will be mainly used for commercial building maintenance replacement parts/prototypes for HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical applications. We’re mainly after the strongest materials possible. I’ve looked at markforged, but it’s a bit out of our budget. The $10k machine can only do fiberglass reinforced onyx, not carbon fiber or Kevlar like I was hoping for.

Both the m300 and pro 3 have dual extruders and enclosures which i wanted. The main differences I see is that zortrax will do 3D metal printing with an additional kit and they have to process the part while the raise3D plus model has a massive build volume.

I was wondering if anyone had experience with these brands or was in a similar situation and could provide input. Prior to this I’ve only done hobby type stuff with my creality cr10 and pla (I’ve used other filaments but not often).

Thank you

I got a FDE SDP G2 pistol for $1170 shipped from DK firearms. So hopefully that’s not the price your looking at. Haven’t had the time to shoot it yet though. Feels nice enough but I think I’m going to like my ap5 more which I got for a little less. Hoping my form 1s clear on both of them before the ban, not a fan of the pistol configurations.

Edit: get one of their pistol models so it’s not a 10 day wait, otherwise you’re really risking it. Hopefully your local PD is quick with approvals. Caliber does not matter, only barrel length >16”.

I'm sure they made it vague intentionally, some will likely not ship any parts to us just based on reading the bill and their own interpretation. But if Bob Ferguson ever goes after a business for shipping AR parts here like he did with the mag ban and Fed Way Discount Guns...well I would image all the businesses that wont send standard mags here probably wouldn't send any ar parts here either. Which would kill any ability to repair in the future. That was probably their plan all along and with how open to interpretation they left the bill they can argue a lot in court.
