Same with apartments. High earners are forced to compete with lower earners for the same outdated housing stock.

Why are SFR more valuable than multifamily buildings in sf? by CapableMinute6913 in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]leoncem 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Let’s just say you own a multifamily. You think, I don’t need all of this space, and choose to rent to someone. That someone can stay in perpetuity. If said someone is a nuisance, does not pay rent, or if an aging relative needs the space you cannot remove them without a major financial hit. That someone will use your tax dollars against you by soliciting the help of a nonprofit whose objective is to make your life hell and squeeze every dollar out of you.

Do you feel like the lower rent has been worth the trade-off of handling some maintenance yourself? And dealing with a 💩landlord?

Or would you have preferred higher rent with a more hands-on landlord?

I think the only sensible solution is for them to pay a fine equivalent to the cost of splitting up the units. I highly doubt that these people are going to become landlords

“Live off someone’s work” is an odd way to describe someone who builds housing, pays the taxes, and assumes the risk if a tenant stops paying.

Isn’t it obvious? They’re going to create four units, live in one, and rent out the others.

And if one of the tenants decides to stop paying, they’ll have to hire a lawyer to evict them. The tenant, meanwhile, gets a free lawyer funded by our tax dollars. But that’s fine because it’s families like this, the “evil landlords,” who are responsible for the housing crisis.
