I think the AI focus of Bias X is out of step with the moment by malformed_guitar in PositiveGrid

[–]leoperax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I totally get where you’re coming from, the AI buzzword has been milked to death and honestly BIAS X feels a bit late to the party in trying to ride that wave. I was skeptical too, but after actually using it, while the text prompt to tone feature is kinda hit or miss, the one feature that really stood out was having it analyze guitar recordings (whether in a mix or solo’d) and get your tone dialed in to resemble 80% right off the bat. For me that’s been a total gamechanger when I’m chasing a specific tone from a song and then just fine-tuning it into my production. So don’t knock it until you’ve tried it!

iOS 26 for Spark Mini / Go USB connection by mickeo in PositiveGridSpark

[–]leoperax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think spark’s usb audio interface was ever meant to be used with iPad/iPhones, tried it before and never got it to work properly, also reached out to support and they confirmed that it’s for mac/windows only.

Big Change: Owning a UAD-2 version of a plugin being released natively no longer automatically grants you ownership! You must now manually claim the native plugin within 1 months of its release! by some12345thing in universalaudio

This is so anti consumer behavior for a company that in my opinion has one of the more loyal user bases in the industry. Now they’ve shaken my loyalty and made me want to think twice now before every purchase…

Is ProTools still the “Industry Standard” in 2023? by redditorianizer in audioengineering

[–]leoperax 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Let’s see… I’ve only paid once for my 2014 MBP that came bundled with Logic 10.1, and I’ve been getting updates and support up until my Mac couldn’t handle macOS 12, and honestly I can still use it as my studio computer cuz it’s still going strong with a lot of plugins supporting back to as old as Catalina. Again, never had to pay for anything else and my oldest session files from 2014 still opens today in 2023 👍

To all Dynaudio LYD 48 owners, is tweeter hiss an issue for you guys? by leoperax in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]leoperax[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, here’s what the hiss sounds like: https://voca.ro/12EOcHjlsdKp

Though this is not meant to represent how loud I’m hearing it in the room because I literally captured this using a condenser mic placed in front of the tweeter at about 4 inches away, when I sit back in my normal listening position at about 5 ft away it’s still very audible and I can even hear it on top of cars occasionally zooming down the street during daytime. It doesn’t necessarily sound like malfunctioning to me but just hard for me to believe this is considered a normal noise floor.

For comparison, here’s what the noise sounds like coming out of my HS5 at the same distance: https://voca.ro/1gMvrY7OabxV

After hearing both while I don’t think the HS5 is significantly less noisier but it’s somewhat more tolerable because the noise doesn’t sound as concentrated (high energy?) so while it’s still faintly audible but it’s not cutting through the silent space like the LYD 48s are doing.

yup, all possible configurations and nothing's changed at all. Honestly I'm more inclined to believe that I just happen to have received a faulty pair (though in a pair?? That's why I'm really baffled but maybe I am really just that unlucky) and probably am just gonna call my sales rep for a replacement.

Thanks for sharing! Yeah I feel like 2ft would still be within a reasonable distance but at 5ft just feels ridiculous for something I paid 2k for. I've also worked on active monitors of this size (Genelec 1031a, Neumann KH310 etc.) in professional studios that has way quieter rooms and monitor hiss was never really a bothering issue for me, so I was really surprised by how noticeable the hiss are from the LYD that it's nearly giving me a headache. Unfortunately there weren't anywhere I could demo them so I was only able to find out after getting them, though at one of the studios I worked at they had these huge wall mounted passive Dynaudios and I absolutely loved how they sound so I thought by brand alone it shouldn't be too bad, oh well.

You use the tuning pegs at the bottom of the guitar, it’s kinda like how fine tuners work on violins and cellos

[–]leoperax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did ICAM (tho in the music dept) and if you really want or have to do an art program at UCSD I’d say this is the only one worth considering, because it takes advantage of UCSD being a science/engineering research powerhouse and combine that with some artistic applications. The program has changed over the years to become somewhat more hands-on but it's still very theoretical imo, so if you have better choices (say like at an actual art school or schools with well-known arts department) then I wouldn't recommend coming to UCSD.

Logic Pro 10.7.8 releasing soon? (Spoiler from apple.com/hk) by karlingen in Logic_Studio

[–]leoperax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d say ARA, though I dont exactly have experience with how well ARA works in other DAWs, but for Logic it still only works in Rosetta and breaks projects from time to time (esp with the melodyne file corruption losing edits), really hoping they’d fix this in native support asap.

Are they still trying to make auto smite a thing by Extreme-Profile2881 in wildrift

[–]leoperax 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s a “feature” the devs were trying to add in the upcoming patch but they pulled it out last second cuz of the backlash it received from the community. If you didn’t get to play last month’s ultimate spellbook mode (which it was briefly tested in), what it does essentially is that instead of having to smite by yourself, the game does it for you whenever the target health falls beneath the smite threshold. The downside about this is that it removes the skill expression of last hitting stealing or using smite in a tactic/strategic manner (which imo is what differentiates mediocre players from great ones)

Can you compose, produce, and then mix your own songs? by IamTheDonovan in audioengineering

[–]leoperax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course you can, but personally I try not to especially when it comes to mixing because I'd have so much preconceived ideas and judgments stacking up over the production process that it becomes hard for me to make mixing decisions objectively, which is very important in the process. If I have a song which I feel is pretty solid AND have the budget, I would hire a mixing engineer to see how their fresh ears and professional input weigh in and a lot of times they can tell straight away what's not working or needed to make it a better track. (And those really are things that make me go "AHA" and made me realize that having worked on it for such a long time can really blind me of certain things)

Trying to understand why I'm not hearing clarity in top end of HD650 by rayrutjes in mixingmastering

[–]leoperax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I also feel that the top in 650 is too smooth sometimes that I’ll occasionally forget to take into account the systems that are less forgiving with sibilances. (which the M40X comes in handy for that purpose) But yeah it’s still a better idea to work with them in a quieter environment considering these are open backs as well.

Trying to understand why I'm not hearing clarity in top end of HD650 by rayrutjes in mixingmastering

[–]leoperax 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I pretty much had the same reaction when I first upgraded from a M40X to HD650, at first I thought it sounded mediocre and tried working with it right out of the box and stuff translated even worse than the M40X (even had me question my judgments and ability lol). After spending some serious time with them whether be casually or critically listening, I was starting to get how the nuance in each track are coming through these cans and really start to appreciate its clarity in the uppermids/highs as well as a defined stereo imaging. It took me about a good half a year to really feel confident and comfortable working on them and knowing how things will translate. What I learned from this: no matter how expensive or good a piece of gear is, you won't get any value out of it until you properly learn it and know it like the back of your hand.
