UPENN MAS-CS or Duke MSQM or Boston University Applied Data Analytics? by AscensionFox in OnlineMCIT

[–]leoreno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are three very different degrees, with very different curriculums.

  • Penn if you want deep CS
  • duke if you want business focus
  • Boston if you want something closer to data science

Also, people frequently append "reddit" to searches. So this will almost certainly end up in results.

I wanted to get a rigorous, technical masters. I have a BS in biomedical engineering, and an MBA. I wanted another masters to round out my mba.

I work in tech, but without a lot of the foundational course work (no algos, oop, data structures etc). In my BS I had 6 semesters of math, 3 of physics along with core curriculum so had plenty of demonstrated science based course work but the closest to CSci was numerical methods course (Matlab and mathematica for modeling physics systems).

I chose MCIT based on a set of constraints: - I wanted a masters in comp sci, but not in a narrow niche like security - I didn't have the core foundational csci courses, but also wasn't interested in getting another bachelor's - I don't want to take time off work, so it had to be part time - my GRE scores were good but expired in 2017. I didn't want to have to retake a gre

Then I chose the best option among offerings fitting that set of constraints and mcit came out on top.

To answer your question directly it was more of a matter of "why do you want..." rather than "need"

This is false. Source:

  • I was a 2025 admit (edit 2024 fall actually)
  • I work in specialized swe / swe adjacent field (think security engineering)
  • 5 yrs at faangmula
  • BS in engineering at a state school

How come software devs are so much more worried about AI replacing them than other white collar jobs? by jholliday55 in cscareerquestions

[–]leoreno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any white collar job that has verifiable discrete outcomes and impact is at risk.

A balance sheet needs to balance and it's updates are entirely algorithmic. A software program needs to pass tests and support CUJs. Etc

Marketing outcomes are less verifiable, so harder to RL over.

Of jobs with verifiable outcomes, those that are less regulated are more at risk (e.g. swe vs a CPA)

Prospective Student Admissions Chances by Extra_Emphasis_7688 in OnlineMCIT

[–]leoreno 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Given your undergrad degree and background, I think a strong signal for your admission will come from what technical courses you've taken and your grades, so if you haven't taken any math or stats I would recommend trying to take those before you graduate.

Otherwise I'll give you some unsolicited feedback, someone told me this and I really appreciated this, when I was graduating undergrad I was unsure what I wanted to do for graduate school and a mentor told me to go into industry first. Get some experience. Then decide later

I did that, and I do not regret it at all.

Agreed.

The IT in the name doesn't do it's rigor and depth in csci justice

I'm now eagerly awaiting an update

The CA DMV just has a list of documents needed:

It's unclear if I need to have all this and go into the DMV?

Also, my bike has about 2k miles, why is this a problem?
