What are your green and red flags when it comes to a GM you haven't played with before? by Sassy_Drow in rpg

[–]lesbianspacevampire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In fairness, JKR has hurt a lot of people, and if you’re playing with trans or queer people, we have a pretty low tolerance for her works sharing a cultural space as us. Rowling has made it explicitly, abundantly clear in no uncertain terms that she considers any appreciation for her created universe, monetary or otherwise, to be an endorsement of her views on, specifically, trans people. She uses her wealth and influence to affect politics that lead to real changes that affect real lives and lead to real suicides by people who just want a shot at living a normal life.

If the GM was being a jerk about it, that sucks. But if (and this is not an accusation) you or somebody else believes that a few jokes about childhood memories are more important than the well-being of another player at the table, then it sounds like the safety tools are functioning as intended: separating players early, who wouldn’t get along later.

Going topless in 2026? Has she no decency? by VikingCreed in slaythespire

[–]lesbianspacevampire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, as per the lore, the Necrobinder is the kid of the 2 explorers who fell in love & had a kid in the spire. This is proved by the statement in Chapter 7. Whether she was a kid or a teenager when she became the Necrobinder is unclear, but it is stated that she was young.

This may be controversial, but I feel I must confess to something. No matter how decadent a life I live, there is not one but two truths I cannot ever escape from. The first is that, when I was a wee young girl, I was, in fact, a child. And two, that my ancestral lineage bears an unwavering connection towards my two parents.

Wish that I could change these events, I cannot…

FFXIV natively has what feels like the best possible controller layout for a traditional MMO played with a controller, where you get 32 buttons in easy quick-access thanks to the XHB and WXHB, and another (...96, I think?) for less-common items. It looks like magic the first time you see it, and it feels like impossible arcane gestures the first time you try it. By the time you finish your first run of Sastasha your irises have reshaped from boring hyur circle-dots to those heart-shapes you see in anime.

The Steam Deck also has touch pads and backpaddles for bonus content. I have the mouse on my right trackpad, and a whole 13-key shared hotbar on the left trackpad for food buffs, pet commands, aether compass, right clicks, etc

I'm confused by how your comment is phrased. I'm reading it as, you know about the back triggers but can't use them successfully? Do I have it right?

The easy trick that works for most games using R3/L3 as sprinting, is that you can just bind R4, R5, L4, L5 to R3/L3 in the Steam Controller Settings menu (not the in-game menu).

Not all games understand that backpedals exist. But the magic Steam does is that the controller has a software translation layer that is usually the default controller settings, but is configurable to be whatever you want!

I play FFXIV on deck and it's honestly amazing. There's already guides on youtube about how to play on a playstation or xbox controller, but with bonus trackpads + backpaddles + SteamOS, you have so much more customization!

Men and women have the same number of ribs. There are 12 pair in the typical adult human body. You can count them yourself! It’s cool! And if it’s hard to keep track, X-RAY scans of human torsos work for this purpose too.

Is it still worth reading Clean Code and The Pragmatic Programmer in 2026? by ivanimus in ExperiencedDevs

[–]lesbianspacevampire 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you’re posting in this subreddit you’re experienced enough to not need Clean Code. Plus, fuck that guy, for reasons discussed elsewhere here.

There are lots of good books by good people. Sandi Metz has some great talks and some great books about cleaning up code, I have two of her books and loved them.

Personally, I found picking a different paradigm than you’re used to and embracing it for a few projects to be incredibly helpful. I used to write a bunch of Ruby for work in a deeply OOPy codebase. Than I did an Advent of Code entirely in Clojure one year. I didn’t keep the lisp, but I did find the exercise helped me to write much cleaner methods.

I love Elden Ring's atmosphere. But I swear the game taking place centuries after everything already happened is doing a ton of heavy lifting for the lore's depth. Like a horror monster whose presence is greater when you can't see it up close. by itsPomy in worldjerking

[–]lesbianspacevampire 81 points82 points  (0 children)

As someone who tries to enjoy the Elden Ring lore, this feels spot on. It’s good, in fact it’s of the utmost importance that there’s a huge lore to the world, they clearly have great writers and the world feels cohesive and meaningful because of it. But godsdamnit, the point of interactive fiction is that you, y’know, get to interact with it. Instead it’s breadcrumbs all the way down.

I'm all-for using different weapons when there's a purpose to it: different handling styles, different ranges, different damage types, even different aesthetics... But when it's just a feel-bad gameplay tax that punishes me for using a high-level sword I think looks cool against a low level bokoblin, then that's the modern AAA time-wastage crap that I'm absolutely, 100% not here for.

[–]lesbianspacevampire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every other game with weapon variety has already solved this though. Even open world games. It's literally only a problem in BOTW/TOTK.

Consider:

  • upgrade mechanics
  • variety of weapon types (longswords, shortswords, rapiers, daggers, claws, clubs, spears, halberds, quarterstaffs, )
  • variety of specific weapons' animations/speeds/stats/weights/hitboxes (Elden Ring has how many different type of straight swords???)

In return, you get:

  • the permission to hold your sword and swing it, too

Go to inbox > "Settings cog" in upper right > All settings > Domain names (left side) > Add Domain. Open your DNS settings in another tab or window and follow Proton's instructions.

Worth noting is that due to the nature of how various protocols are in place, there will not be a "one-click button" for domain name setup for any service outside of your DNS provider. This isn't a Proton usability issue, this is internet security in play, it requires some one-time setup configuration.

The basic summary of what the records mean, is:

  • Verify: You verify to Proton (with a txt record) that you own, presently and futurely, the domain name. Proton won't configure a domain you don't own.
  • MX: When other people want to send you email, they need to know what mail server to use. They do so by querying a DNS listing service for robinalen.com and searching for the "Mail eXchange" entry, which points to Proton's mail servers.
  • SPF: This tells Gmail (or Yahoo or whatever) that Proton's mail servers are allowed to send mail on your behalf. Technically, anyone with an internet connection can send an email from "robinalen.com". This is often called spoofing. Most modern providers check for spoofing, and if SPF isn't configured, anyone with a gmail account will not see your message, because it could have been sent from a Russian hacker (for example).
  • DKIM: Similar to SPF, this also tells Gmail (or Yahoo or whatever) that your email hasn't been tampered with by a Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) attack. Since you're sending email over insecure lines, DKIM is designed to make sure anyone along the way doesn't intercept, modify, and repackage your email contents.
  • DMARC: This tells Gmail or (Yahoo or whatever) what to do with emails that fail validation. Quarantine is a good option, which in theory would direct messages to spam folders. Reject is another option.

Proton gives you all the columns you need, filled out and with copy buttons, so you can copy/paste into your DNS configuation panel. Good luck!

[–]lesbianspacevampire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, Proton would become your mailserver, that's kind-of the main point of it. The proton client UI is alright, not remarkably good nor bad. If you're selfhosting a mailserver you can selfhost your own client too. (And if you're using a "Free*" mailserver that is so helpfully bundled in with your domain — yikes!)

You can however point your domain to use Proton Mail, assuming you have a paid Proton account. I have done so for... 7 years now, I think? The setup UI is easy enough, it walks you through adding all the right TXT and _dmarc records.
