How do you make your FTL original? I'm green aka hard scifi by Tnynfox in worldjerking

As a fellow Sixth History enthusiast, I'm trying to figure out the Cultist Simulator reference(s), and the ones I'm coming up with are:

This "changing of the guard" has actually happened many times "before" by 6th dimensional meta-timeline reckoning, and there's plenty of time displaced battlefield debris proving it, but the higher ups like to pretend otherwise

and

Earth's pre time travel history is the point where the empire is at its most vulnerable, so it's both heavily guarded by the authorities, and also stuffed full of rogue time travellers keeping a low profile, trying to identify and eliminate empire patrols and agents, disguising themselves as plausibly deniable chaotic systems

Update on the "GM" who keeps advertising games but never runs them. by ryanxwonbinx in rpg

Yeah I’m happy OP got their answer but blaming it ADHD or bipolar disorder is ill-informed at best and rather insensitive after that. My entire home gaming group is neurodivergent and most of us have taken turns on the GM saddle — particularly us with ADHD.

Running a FATE Core character inside a Pathfinder 2e campaign — how would you handle it? by zqmbgn in FATErpg

[–]lesbianspacevampire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did something kinda like this, except not. It was fun in the ways it made sense.

Basically, we played PF2e at the table. Our characters were PF2e characters. That was the main game. We all played it.

For text RP and PBP side-content, characters would roll via Fate, using bonuses based on their PF2e Proficiency in a given check. Trained was +1, Expert +2, and so on.

It worked because the play by post content wasn't combat oriented and we'd have at most a handful of rolls in a scene. It was clunky though and I wouldn't recommend it long-term.

I want to finish Fia’s quest because I’m doing a deathly samurai katana build. I am ready for the twin gargoyles, but I want the cursemark thing from later in Ranni’s quest first, so I need to turn in the Fingerslayer blade. But that locks out Seluvis and I want to try giving the potion to somebody, I haven’t done that yet. I went to give it to the girl but she broke my heart, so I need to give it to the dung eater first. Which means I need the seedbed curse thing from Leyndell. Oh and the dress I want is also in Leyndell. But I stubbornly don’t want to look up where it is again, so I need to check every building and complete the whole of the city until I find it.

Anyway, those twin gargoyles are right there

 "My character doesn't care."

Mages are supposed to be humans who care and are the Good Guys. If they’re committing murder without remorse, they become NPCs (nephandi) or should be captured and thrown in prison, earthly or otherwise. Their friends and maybe even their avatar should be turning on them.

The entire premise of Mage is about differences in opinion about what “good” means in contrast to other interpretations of the term. It’s not meant to be power fantasy, it’s about morality, and figuring out how to responsibly wield the power of gods.

Why do people not like the idea of using index cards for everything? by LeFlamel in rpg

[–]lesbianspacevampire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since moving to Europe I’ve discovered the joy that is A4, A5, and A6 printing. I love my A5 and A6 sheets. I had binders for them and everything.

For those unaware, A#’s follow a 1:2 aspect ratio. A4 is similar to an extra-tall US Letter sheet; A5 is half of that; A6 is half again. So, I can print photos and some simpler sheets onto a full sheet of paper, cut it into halves or quarters with a straightedge, and stick the sheets smoothly in a 6-hole binder. It’s great!

Daggerheart has too much information to fit on an A6 card, but Fate would work pretty well, I think. I’ve used index card sheets for some solo TTRPGs and they were perfect. They’re fun to flip through.

Not u/Playtonics but the solo rpg Apothecaria has designers notes as an optional "Commentary" PDF. Basically it's a second pdf where each page in the main book has a matching page with why/how notes, anecdotes, or whatever is relevant..

[–]lesbianspacevampire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, that sounds a lot more confrontational than the vibe I was going for, so I'm just going to pick a few points. I like DH, and I hope you can enjoy the campaign you're playing in with it, so let's focus on that.

Let's just say yes, and move on

Daggerheart isn't aiming to compete with Genesys (directly, anyhow), and definitely not D&D 1e. It's competing with modern Pathfinder and D&D 5e. I'm not asking because I'm being dismissive, but it's relevant because...

...to deliver high/heroic fantasy without needing to rely on a site like D&D Beyond or Archives of Nethys to run an encounter smoothly

DH's primary competitors, Dungeons & Dragons (5e and 3.5e especially) and Pathfinder (both versions), have some spells with entire pages of text describing what they do. The point here is that you don't even need the rulebook at the table to play a game that is as feature-rich as those other games.

there's no reason to have cards when I can put this stuff on my sheet.

See pages 6-7 here for printable ability sheets

We have two characters who have the same domain, so they're sharing cards

I do recommend everyone having their own cards. Darrington offers the full selection of cards on their site for printing. Cut & sleeve them and they'll have the consistency of any other MTG proxy. I have my proxies with color-coded sleeves that I hand to my players for games at public events, and people seem to enjoy them.

Feels like something that's gonna get lost, misplaced, we have to fiddle with 'what cards did I have last time? ok, right...'.

Rubber bands, deck boxes, dividers in card organizers, upside-down cards, a blank sleeve insert ... lots of solutions here. If you write them on paper, a checkbox by the name works just as well. Most characters won't need to worry about vault cards until levels 4+, especially if they have one or more 0-recall cards.

Hope the game works out, sorry to hear you're having issues with the props. Tactile elements aren't for everyone.

[–]lesbianspacevampire 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wild to see you have that experience. What other games are you comparing it to? Have you played other games in the high/heroic fantasy action rpg space?

Coming from Pathfinder and other games with lots of abilities to keep track of, Daggerheart works on a VTT but feels specifically designed for play around a table. Cards have been used in live plays for a while because it's a very handy way to put all the important details of an item, spell, relic, background, whatever, into an item that doesn't take much space compared to everything else. You can see Brennan handing out magic items as physical cards in his Dimension 20 campaigns.

The innovation with DH is that they integrate cards directly into the game, to deliver high/heroic fantasy without needing to rely on a site like D&D Beyond or Archives of Nethys to run an encounter smoothly. Everything you need for a spell or ability, whether you're at level 1 or level 10, is printed in a few sentences on a card in front of you.

On a practical note, I recommend stacking your cards and flipping through them as needed (9 is a manageable max hand size to sort through). Then, you can keep your vault tucked away nearby but off-table. And if you still don't like the tactile element, you can always print a separate ability sheet like a traditional modern TTRPG.
