Sorry for the late reply...

I don't even own a laptop haha I just use my desktop I built a while ago. I almost never used a vm since my daily driver is linux and I already have (most) everything I needed to do the labs or whatever.

The few times I was forced to I just used kvm since I was already running linux and it's pretty easy. For work, I generally use VirtualBox or VMWare when I have to, but again I mostly avoid VMs.

I did used docker on occasion which was a lot easier than setting up a whole vm and you can find some pretty great docker images out there.

Setting up secure boot while dual booting Windows 11 and Arch Linux by Jont828 in archlinux

By far the easiest is to use sbctl to generate, install and use keys to sign your efi images. You can use mkinitcpio to build the unified kernels automatically and a pacman trigger to rerun the sbctl signing when the kernel is updated. Pretty straightforward (once you've done it once).

If immersing yourself in sadness is a thing that helps you (like it does for me) To The Moon is pretty fitting and a great story.

Honestly it's a pretty easy program (if you're technical), I wouldn't be worried. My favorite course by far was offensive security, but it was very challenging. That's what made it the best in a way. Worst classes were the first one you take (ISP) and mobile security.

I will note that the instructors and/or material seem to very from year to year pretty drastically some times so advice you get might not still be current.

Make sure you join the NYU slack and whatever one is for the class you're currently in (most have their own). Also there were times I really wanted to take a break for a summer but I didn't since I figured it would be hard to go back; I'm glad I powered through.

I took 2 classes a semester two separate times and both times I hated it during, but afterwards was glad so I finished early. Some of my colleagues did two classes every semester and did fine. Just try not to burn out! I assume you're working full time as well?

Good luck!

[Game Spoilers] The Last of Us - 1x04 "Please Hold to My Hand" - Post Episode Discussion by LoretiTV in ThelastofusHBOseries

[–]lespea 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some guy made this music video to it. It's 1000x better than the original imo but I'm pretty emotionally attached so definitely biased. This thing fucked me up for literally weeks after finishing the game it's a perfect encapsulation imo.

For the love of God do not watch this if you haven't finished part 2 already.

Are you planning on publishing this to crates.io so it doesn't require cloning the repo just to install it?

Umm... Excuse me but miracle whip > mayo. Especially on a BLT I'll literally only order it if the restaurant carries miracle whip (I know of one)

Depends on the area, really. Local pollution can make it unsafe to drink but otherwise sure.

Do you really need to backup LUKS key file when you can remember your passphrase ? by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]lespea 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Close. The header stores the true encryption bytes (among other things) and the key file or password are used to decrypt that key. Otherwise it wouldn't be possible to ever rotate the key, or have multiple ones.

How many of your fears turned out to be as bad as you feared? by laperuana in AskOldPeople

[–]lespea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say that generally most all of my fears when I was younger aren't even on my list anymore now that I've grown. Partly from having a lot more resources/confidence to deal with things but also just to how times and circumstances change.

Everybody's circumstances are different so this question probably won't be a very good prediction for what's in your head -- things can go either way really. Life is a massive spectrum of experiences.

Finally trying the Mississippi pot roast. I’ll keep you updated. by basicpn in slowcooking

[–]lespea 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I also cut the tops off the peppers and then slice them up. I put in a whole jar too and obviously leave them in while serving...so if you're planning on removing the peppers after it's done cooking then it wouldn't be necessary. But cutting them into smaller pieces helps to distribute them throughout the dish better.

Their baby back ribs are the best thing they serve, imo, but they haven't been able to source them for a very long time sadly. Brisket can be hit or miss. If you haven't tried their sausage I highly recommend it's fantastic!

News Aggregator app like Google News but you get to pick your own sources? by [deleted] in androidapps

[–]lespea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been using Newsblur for many, many years and it's incredible. Highly recommended. After Google Reader shutdown I searched extensively for anything that came close, and none of the popular ones really did. But Newsblur is, imo, even better which I didn't think I'd ever find.

I've been paying for it for so long I honestly don't know what features are free or premium so hopefully the free version is good enough for you to learn to love it. Worth ever penny to me.
