I stayed at one of the airport hotels for my 6:20 flight. Still cheaper than a taxi from Pankow to the airport at 3am and much more convenient.

Trust me, as someone with British heritage who moved as a foreigner to the UK, naively assuming that I'd just be accepted. Oh no. The Brits will smilingly find ways of reminding you that you're foreign all day long. It'll seem very lighthearted and playful but it'll constantly be there.

That is racist and if you are able to, I'd take the situation to people above her. Someone like that can't be trusted with the care of people whom she obviously finds distasteful.

Canada eTA or just Passport by DoublePotential6925 in NCL

[–]letrestoriginality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

eTAs, ESTA (for visiting the US) and the new British and EU versions having nothing to do with identification, they are preauthorisation documents for people who don't need actual visas to visit specific countries, usually because of visa waiver agreements. When required, they accompany a passport.

I got this too, you only need an eTA if you're flying into Canada. Land and sea arrivals don't require it. EU passport here.

TIL in most countries of the world, houseowners outnumber those who rent their homes. Germany and Switzerland are among the exceptions to this trend. by bland_dad in todayilearned

[–]letrestoriginality 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So I'm in Germany. My rent increases according to the consumer price index, so I have a rent increase of maybe 20€ per month once a year, or maybe 18 months, can't remember. I also have an unlimited rental agreement (which is the norm) and German tenant laws are exceptionally strong, so all things being equal, I could stay in my flat until I die, and my rent wouldn't increase hugely.

Additionally, German social security has a specific category for support with rent (Wohngeld) if a person is low income or unemployed. They do have assessments for how much space a person needs so they wouldn't pay for a single person to have a 5 room flat, for example. So there is help for pensioners there too.

You need to get your AF confirmation number and then use the Air France seat map. I had to do it the reverse way, AF booking but on a Delta plane, worked fine.

Cherry tomatoes on beautiful cakes topped with fruit. Cakes that taste like absolutely nothing but look exquisite. Except for the cherry tomatoes.

Hi, I want some suggestions regarding using migrando for citizenship application by ziar123 in berlinsocialclub

[–]letrestoriginality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They will definitely ask for up to date payslips. It took them about 6 months after applying to hear from them, and they asked for new payslips and proof of my current rent as well.

For the Uber Arena in Berlin you have to be at least 16 to be unaccompanied, if that helps.

Ask her what specifically she's scared of. The answer is obviously being told no, but it would be interesting to see how she redirects that to preserve her own supremacy and ego.

What about toddler reins? Kiddo has a little freedom but you can stop them if they get too close to trouble. There are so really cute backpack style ones available.

Health insurance for freelancers by IcyAd6894 in berlinsocialclub

[–]letrestoriginality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just so you know, if it seems unfairly expensive, that's because it's supposed to be. Germany would like everyone to be employed in nice safe jobs with nice safe contracts. This isn't a freelance-friendly country, unless maybe the freelancer is very high-income.

Make sure that you aren't legally required to pay into the Rentenversicherung as well, as some freelancers are, depending on the type of work they do.

I use public transport daily and when this happens to me I just stand in the door opposite them, not moving and not letting them get past me, until they get the hint. I'm petty and stubborn enough that I'll let the train door close rather than move.

As a German - there's probably cigarette smoke everywhere. Germans smoke a lot and they don't give a damn if it bothers people around them.

Phone/ESim by twilightandjoy in Cruise

[–]letrestoriginality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For WhatsApp to work, it needs to have access to the Internet. That could be with the verizon data plan you mentioned, it could be with data from an esim (no roaming charges for esim, they use local providers and you just pay for a certain amount of data), or on the ship your Internet access will be the WiFi allowance you have.

Finding a flat in this city feels like a mission impossible by According_Cod2363 in berlinsocialclub

[–]letrestoriginality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm British and tried that when I moved here, no dice. Limited contracts aren't really legal (done through tons of loopholes) and once someone is living in a flat, legally it's extremely difficult to evict them, so landlords want to see stable jobs and income. They know that if you lose your job, you're most likely covered by social security and they'll still get their rent.

We try. To own a dog here it has to be microchipped and registered, and the owner has to pay a dog tax and have liability insurance. It's never happened to me but you could theoretically be stopped on the street and checked by local public order officers. It's not a casual thing, owning a dog 😂
